I think it'd be great for people like me who don't have that many great options for their hair type. I end up mixing several products on that cost about what this does to get the same results some people can get with one. I usually end up having to do a weird rotation of products for coily and wavy hair depending on how it feels before I wash it and how long it's been since wash day. I've used literal poundland products that made my hair look and feel better lmao. At first I thought my hair was just adjusting to the new product but after 3 months it was still awful so now I'm stuck with over half a bottle of shampoo I literally can't use and a conditioner that doesn't really do anything more than a standard drugstore product.

I've had fob a year ago, and I really liked the first one, it genuinely changed my hair for the better at first. And even more so my scalp. But halfway through the bottle it stopped working as I wanted it to. It did nothing more than what Drugstore shampoo and conditioner did for me. I then changed my goals for the next shipment and that didn't help much either. The shampoo and conditioner work. They don't irritate my sensitive scalp, my hair is healthy etc. But it's not good enough to be worth the money, if I can get the same result for a fraction of the price, especially with international shipping and taxes which I had to deal with.
@ACWells133 жыл бұрын
Out of interest did you pick a formula with silicones? I've had a similar experience- switched to a different shampoo, which has been amazing for a while then has just stopped working, and my hairdresser said it was probably silicone deposits building up over time.

@@ACWells13 No, I got the silicone free option. I've never used shampoos or conditioners with silicones in my life before, so I didn't see the reason to start with fob. The second shipment with adjusted goals worked, but since my hair by then was so healthy, it didn't work that much better than drug store shampoo would and just is not worth the price. I ordered from them online and I kinda feel like the soothe scalp option actually made my scalp drier and more flaky....like I switched from slightly oily dandruff flakes bothering me 3 days after washing to dry super itchy flakes bothering me the next day. Idk, I really want to love it, so I'm taking a break but gonna go back to it and hope it was just weather or hormone related or something

I've actually been using Function of Beauty for two years now and I really like it! It's a little pricey, especially because I live in Canada and shipping here is expensive, but I was using Moroccan Oil before so the price is pretty comparable. I also found the bottles last a really long time so it feel worth it to me. If you're willing to spend a little more on hair products, I would recommend this brand.

Question- you keep saying "they say" and "the scientists" when talking about individual ingredients and what they do, but you don't cite a study or where you got your information from anywhere? I'm curious to see where you got all your scientific claims. I'd also be curious to see who funded the studies (like say, perhaps a company financially invested in saying an ingredient does a specific thing?), but I cannot look into anything because you haven't provided a bibliography. Thanks for your review, its very detailed but I'd like a little more background information!

I mean, the ingredients sound cool and all, and I really appreciate that you did your research and actually read proper scientific articles. However, without knowing how much of each ingredient is added we cannot know for sure that they are actually benefiting the hair in any way. They do sound promising, which is a great start, but when it comes to ingredients dosage is everything. Too little of something will not have any effect, and too much of it might even be harmful. Also, there are other things that come into play, such as how the ingredients interact with each other, stability, delivery systems, etc... I am a bit skeptical about some of the claims, since both products end up getting washed off anyway, so are the ingredients going to be effective by just laying on the hair/scalp for a few minutes? I would not make a general claim that these products are good based solely on the ingredients, I think we can only know for sure after trying it out for a good while. Great video regardless, just some thoughts from a molecular biologist :)

Fair enough! Based on the order of the ingredient list I was personally happy with the amount of active ingredients in each formula. I am trying to learn more about cosmetic formulations to learn how things work together so if you know any good resources off the top of your head, I’d love to know! ☺️

@@kayleymelissa It's really cool that you are diving deeper into this world of beauty science, I personally find it fascinatingI I do have some experience on scientific research, but I work in biomedical research, which is a different world altogether, so I am no expert on cosmetics, much less on hair care ahaha But, like you, I am very interested in learning more about formulations :) I don't really use any specific resources, I just go on pubmed, researchgate, or even google scholar and search for topics of interest when curiosity hits. I can suggest two really great youtube channels off the top of my head though, which present well-researched information in a simple and engaging way: - Lab Muffin Beauty Science has a PhD in chemistry, so she really is an expert on active ingredients and talks a lot about cosmetic formulation - Angie Burgs is a chemist that also debunks a lot of beauty myths Highly recommend both if you haven't checked them out yet! However, I believe they do focus mostly on skin and makeup, as have I in the past, which is why your video left me excited to know more about the effectiveness of these ingredients and formulas :) I appreciate that you left a lot of sources in the description box!

Such a great video! Thank you! Ok, here are my experiences with some of the CORE ingredients: -GLYCERIN: Makes my 3A curls frizzy when it's humid/rainy (which is most days, here). -SHEA: looks nice at first, but builds up so that my hair gets so heavy it stops curling. My hair stylist is a curly hair specialist and thinks that Shea builds up on everyone, all the time. Maybe someday, customizable hair products will let us skip on the glycerin and maybe someday, Shea will be less common in curly products.

Does anyone know why it’s only up to 3 boosters? Like does the bottle only have enough space for 3 or is more than 3 not good for your hair?
@ReneGrays3 жыл бұрын
I was just asking myself the same. FOB states on their websites faq: "You can buy 1, 2, or 3 - but not more than 3, as it won’t all fit and mix properly." So theoretically you can absolutely add all of the boosters, as long as you use a bigger bottle.
@multifaceted73 жыл бұрын
I think it's also because the more boosters you add, the less each will work because each one is being diluted more and more with each addition. So if you add too many, you won't be getting as much of the benefits of each booster.

I've used the products from the website and customised it to my hair etc (so not these Target products), they were nice products but didn't rock my world considering the high price. I think stylers are more important for my curls, I have yet to find anything that really keeps my curls nice and defined for any length of time. I emailed Function of Beauty to see if they had suggestions to improve my chosen formula, and the responses were vague and just referred me to the hair quiz, which I had already done.

I decided since I was shipping my in shower hair care from the US anyway I'd give actual function of beauty a try and this has helped me choose the "help" I need for my next batch. @kayleymelissa3 жыл бұрын
Oop! Fair! Check back tomorrow! I saved all of them, but it might take me a little while to compile them all.
@kayleymelissa3 жыл бұрын
Added as many as I could find. I did that thing where I thought I was saving as I was researching and missed some. I'll add them as I re find them. Btw! If you have any advice on finding good studies, I'd love to know how to make my research more robust :)!
@thebookalchemist43533 жыл бұрын
@@kayleymelissa I hope you don't mind that I chime in with some thoughts :) I don't think the issue is as much about "where" to find good studies but "how" to critically analyze them. That comes with time and experience and with comparing studies and finding similarities and differences between them. On pubmed and google scholar and all those platforms you can find a lot of different studies, all of them peer reviewed and published in their own right, but like OP said "not all studies are created equally". It does not necessarily mean that some studies are better than others, just that when interpreting them we have to take some things into consideration. So off the top of my head you can look at sample sizes (the bigger the sample size, the more robust the results will be), or the number of studies arriving at similar conclusions using different methods/populations, or the doses used of a certain ingredient in each study and how said ingredient is administered. In the case of studies involving human subjects, it is important to know if the studies are double blind, if they are independent or not (meaning they are not being funded by the companies creating said product, which could bring in some bias), even the age, ethnicity, etc of the subjects involved can be relevant. It is quite complex, and no study is perfect! And usually there is a lack of studies involving new active ingredients in beauty, especially independent ones, so you just have to work with what you've got :) I don't know if this helped at all lol but I think you are already doing a great job with your research! It is a lot of work.
@kayleymelissa3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to write that out for me! That makes a lot of sense! Just knowing what to look out for and be critical of is very helpful. :)
@789esg3 жыл бұрын
@@kayleymelissa I should have clarified what I meant! The other commenter explained it very well. Some other things that are important are the control groups. Because if the authors say that an effect was noted from using an ingredient, it’s important to know what they are comparing it to
