It’s much easier for us from an outsiders perspective to say “you should Have taken the lift ed it’s too dangerous” but for someone who has travelled the world on a unicycle seeing things we’ve not seen experiencing different roads/weather/cultures we cannot come close to seeing this situation from Ed’s perspective. Ed’s afterthought showed us that he does realise that this might have been dangerous and that other people are involved too...but at the end of the day he said he would stop if it got too dangerous. The Man at the beginning was a fair and just man. He strongly disagreed with Ed because of his safety, but still gave Ed help with a transport following behind him. The fact that Ed had to process this after the stretch of roadworks shows us that he learned a lesson from this and that his journey around the world is important to him however sometimes it’s important to follow the spirit of adventure with an aspect of understanding, compassion and faith.

It is your determination and grit to continue that has carried you thus far. Another thought for you to consider is about the other drivers on the road. Countless cyclists can tell you about how drivers that have been held back for a bit behind cyclists become frustrated by the delay and can become reckless or aggressive trying to regain lost time. I’m not faulting you for your decision to ride on but since you are openly reflecting on your “rules” just keep this extra bit into your consideration for the future. So, not just your own safety but that of all the drivers on the road.
@batlin5 жыл бұрын
I think it's important to ride on these "dangerous" roads if that's what you want to do, because it also normalises the idea that people can and will cycle everywhere. Otherwise, dangerous roads will stay dangerous forever and it will be seen as a cyclist's folly to go there rather than every road user's responsibility to drive safely.

the construction super, Frank, he didn't make a mistake - he designed a detour that would move the maximum number of cars - but knowing there were pinch points, he should have designed to narrow the highway in-between them - and lined-in a paved shoulder for bikes to justify the narrowing. Keeps his crews safer, and convinces a bunch of the hurry-hurry folks to take the 200 mile detour. :)
@PhilJonesIII5 жыл бұрын
I used to cycle 15 miles each-way to work daily. I loved it because the greater part was in the countryside. The nice thing about doing that is that you get to know almost every bump and incline in the route. In Winter I would be dressed like an electric Morris Dancer and took no chances of not being seen. Then on one very dark Winter night, no streetlights and against the wind and rain. The long straight stretch of road with no traffic anywhere. I was having a ball, felt good to fight the wind. Until I hit that fire extinguisher. Deer, badgers, foxes, hedgehogs, rabbits were common enough and the length of my lamp beam was enough to get around them. The fire-extinguisher gave me a 'What the f***?' moment and not enough time to avoid it. It wrecked my front wheel while I ended up on my back, winded and still not believing what I saw. It was real enough. I put it on the side of the road and carried the bike from there. I guess someone read something about the spontaneous combustion of country lanes and put it there as a public service. I know where I wanted to put it.

Heh Ed, that’s an interesting dilemma. A couple of thoughts for both sides of the argument. Of course we all have different risk thresholds and if you felt you were confident in taking the risk, that is your choice and you were in a better position to judge that I feel. You are of course ‘at risk’ whenever you are on the unicycle. From the other viewpoint, I can empathise with your wish to cycle an unbroken line, especially considering you’re putting so much time and effort into it, but if that line is broken in a way that is beyond your control, I feel you could still ‘claim’ the accolade, so to speak. Don’t be too hard on yourself dude, after all, you need to stay alive to be able to say you’ve completed what you’re trying to achieve. For context, I abseil down very high historic buildings for a living, and ran my first trail Ultramarathon yesterday, 34 miles of mud and 6000 feet of ascent in 7 hours and 52 minutes. Some people don’t understand and criticise, but if you train properly it’s very achievable. Your goal is immense and carries risk, but you’re well prepared in all respects. Keep going, be aware and safe dude and continue to enjoy your journey. I’ll definitely buy the book! 😀 John

I read about bikers who refused a lift through a very dangerous zone in the Middle East, sneaked away from the military convoy they were supposed to join and got kidnapped by local insurgents right away. Their home country's embassy had to negotiate and pay a sizeable ransom to get them releases just so they could tell a story about their own tenacity rather than their stupidity...And since nobody wants Ed to be the first to populate a Cemetary for Fallen Unicyclists, no one should hold accepting a lift against a traveler when reason says so...

@dudeonbike8004 жыл бұрын
Busy motorways are open to ALL people in the US. To say that they're only open to drivers because drivers make them death and maiming zones is giving in to the mayhem that IS the motor vehicle. Sure, freeways are the exception. That's fine, I wouldn't want to ride on one anyway. Even though exception is made in CA at least that when an alternative route is not available, the freeway is legal. Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz and Hwy 24 in Orinda are two examples. Drivers have no right to be on the road, whereas all other users do. Driving is a privilege and should be treated more as such. If drivers make conditions dangerous, then DRIVERS are the problem! Or road design, or whatever else is causing motor vehicles to create dangerous conditions. The problem here is that New Zealand was too stupid, lazy, and/or ignorant to accommodate other user groups on this stretch of road. Sure, it was an emergency situation, but to simply say, "Nope, no exceptions. You either ride in a car or risk your life" really isn't the best solution." Especially when it's catering to the ONE user group that has no right to the road (at least as far as US law is concerned). Society has been so poisoned by the motor vehicle. Your reply is proof thereof.
@davidwarren92045 жыл бұрын
IF things are dangerous, it's because the operators of extremely-dangerous machinery (aka cars) are operating them without due care and attention. Yet the default position is inevitably to demand that cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists restrict their freedom to peacefully go from A to B. How about the road worker boss says to Ed "yeah bloke, off you go" and then stops every car driving down the road and says "listen up, dimbulb, there's a unicyclist minding his business up ahead. If you hit him, I'll make it my life's work to see you in jail for driving negligently". That should be the norm for car drivers. You hit someone, you pay dearly.
@adamt76675 жыл бұрын

@@DouglasCarnall No, that's the point. The above comment that the roads are essentially just for cyclists, and that cars are just a nuisance, when in fact it is the opposite way around. Roads are designed for cars, and bikes are allowed to use them. Cyclists who obey the rules of the road are tolerated, if not welcomed due to the inevitable issues they cause. Stating that the responsibility is always on the motorist is obtuse and completely unjustifiable.
