The 901 is in my opinion the finest .308 AR yet produced. It shoots on par with an SR-25 in addition to being well-balanced like the SR-25, but costs less than half as much to produce, and has all the monolithic advantages of the LMT MWS but without the MWS' terrible front-heaviness. CZ should bring Larry Robbins back to continue work on his baby and keep iterating on it and making it better.

I was despondent to hear when Diemaco was bought out by Colt Defense. They made arguably one of the finest family of AR-15 based rifles every made, with large sales to several European nations. Then they were bought out by a multiple-bankrupted company, basically known for making +80 year old obsolete pistols that appeal only to diehard nostalgia fans. Even the US Marine corps broke tradition and went with HK instead of Colt when it came time to upgrade their rifles with the M27. Things are not looking good for Colt, but CZ buying them is one of the best things that they can hope for. They'll have a world of hurt coming their way if they do decide to purchase Colt. Hopefully they will actually drag Colt into the 21 Century and be profitable.

I thought the reason the Z-40 never really caught on was that Colt filed their first bankruptcy just as the Z-40s were being delivered by CZ, and in the restructuring, they opted not to continue selling them, so CZ was left with a huge pile of slides and frames, and rebranded them as CZ-40Bs, and when they ran out of slides and still had frames, they adapted the P01 slides and sold those as the CZ-40P. Also, the CZ-RAMI is based on the CZ-40, and is still in production to this day.

Most of people in the world never heard about that Colt had some financial problems, for most of people it's still legend.

I have noticed a trend that the very best manufacturers of the best American products (which is totally subjective with Colt) have been bought up by foreign companies. Square D has always made the best electrical panels, and a French company bought them out. Locke insulator who made the finest large insulator for power lines and substations is now owned by NGK Spark Plug of Japan. After Super Storm Sandy, I loaded up on these stocks and the construction companies who got the bulk of the work rebuilding the electrical systems. ALL of the materials companies that were once American are ALL foreign owned now. Fairbanks Morse and Colt were both under the same corporate ownership but FM's machine shops only make ONE model Fairbanks Morse design, and all the rest are usually MAN marine engines for large oceangoing ships, or very large emergency generators. At one time FM made one of the largest diesel locomotives. That business is now dominated by General Electric. GE is a great investment if you want to buy all of the items at a garage sale. Colt has had a financially checkered past, at best. How many bankruptcies has Colt gone through? Their wheel guns turned to trash in the 1990s. QC was just not there and cost cutting in manufacturing was simply NOT on the same level as S&W's cost cutting techniques in manufacturing. Colt's technologically still mired in the middle of the 20th century, with late a 20th century NAFTA type total lack of quality control. Simple questions: Does Colt make the best 1911? NO. Does Colt make the best M4/M16/AR15 type rifles? NO. Are either one a good value? HELL NO! CZ makes a fabulously nice 1911! It is a good value. The CZ75 is one of the best evolutions from the Browning Hi Power to a DA/SA hammer fired pistol. The CZP10 is a fantastic option to buying Glock's G19. CZ already makes a good wheel gun in their Dan Wesson line.

Wonderful explanation, we know very well down here in Italy what happens when the money world get too much inside any factory....that factory become a marketing strategy environment, made by Investors, occupied by people who know very well the market rather than the products and they starts to select people to hire as a head of departments persons choosen by their politic connections, lobby connections, friends of friends, etc.etc. and they starts to cut the production costs, the quality goes down, the parts made by other companies increase, and the real businness core of the company changes slowly and the end is still the same......big money for some people....short life for that company...and they start to sell and buy back the company, make strange joint ventures etc. I wonder why Beretta didn't tink to buy Colt once that now is sadly on sale again.....

same here, but moving soon, early retirement and probably TN. I worked for Colt back in the '80's, the corp., not the company ( I was at Pratt and Whitney Machine Tool)....toured Colt a few times, besides the custom work I was not impressed. Got offered a job their about 6 years back, Quality Engineer...I knew enough to run away, as I felt quality has become their enemy. Too much sole source gov't business will make a shop soft.

I am very hopeful of seeing a Colt 1903 with a series 80 firing pin safety coming out of this purchase. :) From a revolver hunter vantage the Colt MK III revolvers were a total flop. So too was their Anaconda. The older revolver designs were simply better, but Colt didn't make them anymore, so the handgun hunters drifted off to S&W revolvers. Colt took a long time to master sintered metal and I was not the only officer in my police department to have a hammer spur simply come off the Metropolitan or Trooper gun, so we went S&W too. Noting also none of the Colts we tried, not even the OPs and old Commandos could handle the new +P+ .38 Specials, but the S&Ws did just fine. When the wonder 9s emerged, Colt ignored the trend and had nothing. The attempt by Colt to charge the military more to replace the 1911s than Colt was charging dealers for a 1911 played greatly in a decision to hold 9mm trials and just walk away from the 1911. Alas a day came when all of us DoD employees turned in our Colt and Ithaca 1911s and replace them with Sigs and Berettas. The result is a whole generation of shooters have grown up never even have handled a Colt, and some have never even seen one outside of a display or a movie. This can't be compensated for by simply raising prices on the few products left. Hardly anyone wants to pay for a Colt Mustang .380 (for instance) when the looks just like copies from Kahr, Kimber and Sig cost 1/3 the price and even have some parts interchangeability. Yes you can still order a Colt SAA for $1799 (today's price) and delivery will come sometime before Dec. 2021, or for less than $500 you can pick up a Uberti clone with 90%+ parts interchangeability and go home with it today. Their $900+ M4s have 100% parts interchangeability with the $300 clone guns. Face it, Colt is dead. Purchase by CZ is the only option short of a bankruptcy sale of the assets.

Colt and F N both mostly work mostly for the government when companies do that and don't concentrate on people buying their products they have a problem when they're is no war going on I have dealt with FN but no more customer support is not there it wasn't for me and anytime an investment company buys something it is just looking to make a cheap product and make a profit.

CZ already owns Dan Wesson, I think they might be competing with that brand, them selfs.
@Satchmoeddie4 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. Put the Colt name on the lower end CZ 1911s. keep the Dan Wesson name on the tensioned barrel revolvers, and maybe keep the Dan Wesson name on their high end 1911 competition guns, and double stack 1911s. Of course the .38 Super Mexican Heritage pimp guns will always keep the Colt name. I have seen those El Grito or La Grita 1911s that looked like they were dredged from a river bottom and then dragged behind the police car back to the evidence locker, sell for north of $4000, but I do live in a border state. They just eat that stuff up with the fake laser engraving, and gold plated inlays on high polished stainless or sometimes nickel plate frames and slides. The Aztecas were good selling 1911s. You cannot own .45 ACP or 9x19mm, or .40 S&W or 10mm or anything any military has used in Mexico, so a .38 Super is as good as you can legally get down in Mexico, without going wildcat and I don't know if that one flies down there or not. That is about the ONLY thing Colt got right in marketing, but they don't sell all that well outside of Arizona, New Mexico, California and Texas. Anything .38 Super commands a stupid high price in a border state, and Colt figured it out.

@@Satchmoeddie Are they still producing the CZ branded 1911s? I only saw one years ago and it was "low-end" in price only, was very well made and would sell quite well with a Colt pony on them IMO
@favor4afavor8233 жыл бұрын
They aren't competing with themselves, they have what's referred to as a competitive advantage in business. They already have equipment, machinists, supply chains etc specifically for 1911's. Other manufacturers that may want to produce 1911's would have to invest in all these areas, as well as get the brand off the ground. CZ with the Colt brand will have none of these issues, as well as no "learning curve" in any of these areas. They can incorporate Colt esthetics into current high-end production and do very well.

@Pidalin3 жыл бұрын
Not so sad, more weird, I just don't understand how is that possible. CZUB is just small company from small country, how the hell could they just buy Colt? It doesn't make any sense to me. But if I understand it correctly, it's not owned literally by CZ, it's some gun group which includes some other brands etc....
@jalan81714 жыл бұрын
Besides buying a name, why would CZ invest in a brand that has tarnished itself so badly over the past decade? CZ has Dan Wesson as a premier revolver and auto loading pistol brand. Example- After a decade of ownership, Callaway Golf devested itself of the Ben Hogan brand since it already offered premium priced clubs under its own name. It kept the Apex name and sold off the Ben Hogan brand to an independent group of investors in Fort Worth that could never threaten Callaway for a serious market share. Could CZ take the Colt brand to market prominence again? You be the judge.

I think most of Europeans never heard about that Colt had some financial problems, for us it's just American legend and original Colt guns are very popular here even when it's expensive, everyone wants original Colt, not some modern copy. So maybe CZ is planning bring "good old Colt" brand to Europe.

Chris, you often speak of General Keyes as a Savior of Colt, yet you also mention all these godawful staffing and production decisions made on his watch. Hiring all his unqualified buddies from the Marines; no availability for decision-making; lives in another state and flies to office infrequently etc... It sounds as if many of the downward spiral type problems were his doing. In the future, if this topic comes up it would be interesting to hear about positive changes made during his tenure that offset all the negative ones. Great video, thanks!!

@@darkheathen6765 LMAO. American still make the best guns in the world. It just so happens that we make a lot of bad guns too. Getting Colt Canada would give CZ an inside track to replace the Canadian Forces' Inglis BHP pistols. No one has answered previous requests for bids because they needed to turn over their technical data packages to Colt Canada. The TDP requirement has reportedly been removed, but it would undoubtedly be attractive to "Buy Canadian."
