No kidding, deep wheels are faster than shallow ones! What I really want to see is the 858 tested against the new 808 (and why not throw in some budget ebay 80+mm wheelset too). The 858 costs about double the 808 - is there any real difference between them? Zipp say the 858s are much more stable in crosswinds - would be interesting to see if you can actually feel the difference.

55-55mm is the Best. Ive try 90mm, it was risky unless you are a pro. wind that come from the side will push riders as bike weight are light even total weight is 10kg(whole bike)

Beautiful wheels, I love deep section wheels and have never found them to be scary to ride. Even in reasonably high winds :)

Nice looking wheels. I prefer 50mm myself, still have aero benefits, but lighter and with better handling in crosswinds.

Of course deep section wheels are going to be faster than aluminium shallow wheels what should have done is zipp 858 against cheaper carbon wheels like the winspace hyper . But the reason you didn’t do that would be because it would show that the zipp wheels were way overpriced. You guys cannot be trusted for good reviews anymore because your results are biased towards your sponsors.

The danger of using deep section front wheels really depends on one's overall TT position. The more weight over the front end, generally the more sensitive one is to crosswind using them
@nightsfalling2 жыл бұрын
I never had the opportunity to use them but I would like to try them and see if they feel different. Also, if they are only going to make me about a minute faster I don’t think is worth the extra money. But that’s me I’m not fast enough for one minute to make a difference on my race.

Oh man, inward sooo hoping we would be able to win a pair 🙈😂 I love the look of the wheels, are they way faster than other deep section wheels and worth the cost? Probably not, but if you’ve got the the money to spare, good for you! Don’t be deterred by all the nay sayers.

So over a sprint distance the gains are negligible. Zipps are insane when it comes to price so for me its always been HED. I have at set of Jet 9 plus wheels and a Plus disc to boot all of which I got on super discount. I couldnt buy a new Zipp disc for what I paid for all three HED's.
@samsh112 жыл бұрын
Should we be surprised that a deep section wheel is faster than a shallower wheel? Wouldn't a better test have been if the new Zippier wheels are faster than other 80mm equivalent wheels from other brands? Then we as the consumer would know if we were better to spend the money on Zipp or something cheaper but with most of the performance!

Hm, not sure if cycling on 200 Watts is the right power to test such wheels. They would probably make a bigger difference when you go faster than this. The faster you go, the bigger the difference to „normal“ wheels. 2 minutes difference over 180km is not „significant“ in my opinion and not worth the investment. 😉

Considering a majority of our viewers won’t be pushing as much, or much more than 200W, I feel it makes a lot of sense to show it at such a speed. Of course, it’s one short experiment to show too
@runfrankfurt2 жыл бұрын
@@markthrelfall3577 Yes, I understand where you are coming from and the overall review was great amd detailled. But in that case, such a wheel is absolutely not necessary for „the majority of viewers“. 😝 Therefore the verdict should have also been guiding in that direction, at least in my opinion. I would be really interested in a review where you push harder and do a comparison then. The difference should be more significant then and would show what power you really have to put in it to be worth the investment and to make a difference.

I'll do 250w on a short course so was interested in such a low output test. But would have been interesting to see how much I could gain if I were to aim for 300w big boy pants 😎

@@runfrankfurt The mistake you're making here is thinking that this is a review. It's a sponsored video (i.e. ad) and of course Zipp wants you to buy their wheels whether you need them or not. GTN and GCN doesn't do reviews, they do sponsored videos.

200W for five hours after a bit of swimming, and before some hours of running isn't easy. It’s fast enough that air drag is over 90% of the overall effort. In absence of some murderous wind that's about 34-35 km/hr on a Tri bike. The bigger issue is that Zipp wheels are not very quick for such a deep wheel, do not support 25mm tires which make a lot of sense in a non draft legal triathlon, and come at an eye-watering cost. DT Swiss 80mm wheels which uniformly test faster, which make some great hubs and spokes, cost less than 2000 Eur / USD.

Unless you are at the top of your age group, where the difference is less than 1 min, then it makes no sense to invest in such expensive wheels, when you save that little time. Most age groupers can make up the same time by getting a better swimming technique.

A set of these cost $4400. Who in their right mind spends that kind of money to save less than 2 minutes on an Ironman distance? Pros are sponsored and amateurs doesn't need to bother themselves with 2 minutes more or less on a 10 hour total time. Silly waste of money, buy another bike or travel somewhere instead if the money is burning a hole in your pocket.

Lower pressures are not faster. Myth. 28 over 25s are faster at the same pressure but not at a lower pressure. I run 62s and it’s pretty scary at high winds but I’m talking plus 30min winds would most people ride out in that? If so drop the front wheel depth. Sorted.
@jefferycampbell2243 Жыл бұрын
Depends on the surface roughness where you ride. If buttery smooth, you want high pressure. On rougher roads the vibrational losses become dominant and lower pressures are faster.
