I mean yes if you dig into a deep dark cave you can die from fall damage or fall into a lava lake, if anything I think this rule has become more dangerous than before, lava could be 7x7 now it could be 100x50 or larger lava lakes

With the caves update, there isn’t much need to dig straight down anymore as now once you find a cave it goes down to negative Y levels which has never been a concept in minecraft up until the caves update. The only players who would still need to dig straight down are console players, and there’s only abt a 20% chance of digging into something dangerous.

I always dig straight down because it makes going down into your mines way faster for repeat trips (just fall straight down the hole into a water puddle) Just keep a water bucket handy and the odds of anything going seriously bad is basically zero

I have a way to dig straight down: Mine 2 blocks in the ground and stand in the middle and mine down one block at a time. If there is a giant cave below you and you mine into it you will stand on the block that wasn’t mined

If you do it smart you can do it. Basically it's a good rule of thumb when you're starting out, but when you simply understand the risk or can save yourself or understand that digging strait down on the surface is not nearly as dangerous as digging strait down by deepslate and bedrock or high in the sky then there's a time and a place to risk it. It's just not as likely for you to die as we thought it was before.
