I feel like they need to incorporate wrestling takedowns and trips to advance ground and pound scenarios and like you said just off balance someone. Maybe have it to where if your ground and pound isnt getting through after a couple seconds the ref resets both fighters since they can only ground and pound from a standing position. But the threat of the takedown could easily open up more chances for elbows to land. Also don't actually score trips and takedowns, score the effective damage that they lead to if any. That way you don't have people shooting as a stall tactic. If you're tired and you shoot and get the takedown but end up on the ground with your opponent you get stood up right away so it was just a waste of energy. if you get it but dont get good enough ground and pound off you reset so again its a waste of energy. It could have people only resort to those movements to try and land damage or simply close distance and get the clinch. especially kickboxers and mma guys.
