This sounds like Goldilocks pricing to me. It's a common strategy. A company makes one product (or service) that is fairly basic, a second product (service) that's noticeably nicer for a fair bit more money, and a third option that's only marginally nicer but way more expensive to make the second option look like a steal. The point of the third option isn't to sell the third option. It's to make people choose the middle option because they feel like they're getting a deal.

This sounds a lot like how I use BingAI to help with my Japanese, but BingAI does that for free. It's not perfect by any means, but it's helped me wrap my head around grammar stuff that I was confused about, and I was able to have some nice simple practice conversations. The only real difference I see with the Duolingo AI thing would be the ability to talk to the duo specific characters, but that just does not seem worth the price to me.

I was just about to mention the forums when you did. I packed in my nearly complete French course after their "redesign" and have restarted Dutch (the redo messed up my many notebooks worth of study system, I changed my style for the Dutch). Without active forums it's making it much harder than learning at school. What I don't get is the "guidebook" at the start of each unit is only a few sentences which turn up in the exercises. There's not one grammar lesson in it! After nearly 1500 days without a break it's very disappointing.

@wyqtor

You can get a subscription for 20$, which currently gives you access to 25 messages with ChatGPT4 every 3 hours. That's 100 messages in a 12-hour period, so in two days you can get your 200 messages. AND you can use the unlimited and blazing fast ChatGPT 3.5 for the simpler queries. For simpler language learning questions it is more than capable.

By far the hardest part of learning a language is not the strange alphabets and runes, which are very worthwhile for anyone to learn. Online text discourse is relatively easy. It is actually hearing and speaking it in real life which is the hardest. My introduction was hearing Russians "cyka blyat" when I nailed them on CSGO. So good! I think if a ChatGP AI is coupled with a language AI (I mean a speech AI) to interact with it would be an excellent use rather that learning nothing but swear words (which are also essential).

The roleplay feature seems pretty cool but I'm afraid it wouldn't be much use to people like me who are learning more rare languages. There's less media online for AI to consume to learn say, Gaidhlig, which has fewer than 100,000 speakers worldwide and even less who are considered fluent. And I can tell you just from seeking further learning opportunities online, there are not many people out there writing, creating videos, etc in the language. There just is not much active discourse taking place in Gaidhlig online for AI to observe. So, that sucks. We already don't get stories on duo with Gaidhlig, and the forums feature was really the best way to deepen understanding of the language inside the app. I've turned to Reddit, KZbin, books, music etc for further enrichment but i would've done that anyway. The forums are missed.

Just commenting about the cost, but basically GPT-4 is incredibly expensive. They have different context models, but even the lower model is extremely expensive to use. Duolingo being a partner, I imagine they're getting a special rate, but I don't doubt that it's still going to cost them a lot due to the computational cost required to run GPT-4.

they should have added chat-gpt to the normal non-paid version but only make it so that they only have a set amount of prompts they can give to chat-gpt maybe 5-10 a month and then you can pay to remove the limit, it would give a taste of duo max without making it so that the server cost's would duplicate or triple

I asked chatGPT which weighs more: 1kg of water or 1kg of water. It said 1kg of ice weighs more and tried me to convince in any way it could, providing a bunch of very convincing (yet flawed) points to backup its claim. It insisted, even when I pointed its flaws. If I wasn't a physicist, I'd probably fall for its lies. I also use chatGPT for programming and sometimes it makes some very weird mistakes that cause the code to break. Honestly, I wouldn't trust this AI to teach me anything. I also heard Khan Academy is already experimenting with this thing and I can only feel sorry for those who rely on it to teach them stuff like mathematics, sciences and so on. The free ChatGPT based on GPT3.5 can be a bit weird. It guessed a verb stem wrong in French, and then added the usual endings, that way inventing a new verb form. It also used some common English phrases translated word by word. And worst of all, you will always get an answer, even if the AI doesn't know. All that is basically part of the concept and can only be reduced, not eliminated. I guess GPT4 might be better, even if just for the bigger pool of training data and parameters. I'd assume most of the custom applications like Bing or Duolingo to be based on that version. (Accessing GPT4 at openai requires a paid subscription, so people tend to go to bing even though it has certain limits that are meant to reduce the rate of death threats that come from the AI)

I am a little tired of people complaining that Duolingo is expansive. Try to get the same learning from a school or private tuition. Even at £120/year it is still cheap. I am french living in the UK. It took me years to learn English and it was painful. I spent a lot of money buying books and many years at school learning the language and it was was a really poor result at the end. I am fluent in English now because I live here but it was painful. I decided to learn Norwegian for the fun of it, also I am going on holiday there this summer. I have been learning Norwegian for 3 months with Duolingo. I am absolutely amazed by how much I learned in such short amount of time, especially because I know no one else who speaks Norwegian. All I have is TV, podcasts, KZbin and Duolingo. AI will be welcome in order to have some kind of dialogue with somebody. I am with you on the free trial though. It would be interesting to see how good it is before committing. I don’t know if Duolingo is reading any of this but a feature I’d like to see is being able to find other people who learn the same language inside the App. Just my thoughts

If you want the Chat GPT role play, you can just pay for open AI chat premium account and use GPT-3.5 for the same purpose. I just tested it and it can play the role of a character in many different languages--more than just spanish and french! It can also correct your grammar. Chat GPT-4 is better but you only have 20 messages per day. GPT-3.5 is still good at it and there is no message cap. I speak French and it did a great job as a correspondence/role play chat bot. It's grammatical knowledge is great and it corrected my intentional mistakes upon being prompted. It doesn't offer corrections unless you ask, which is also good IMO as it doesn't interrupt the flow of the conversation. Obviously it's not as robust as the Duolingo version, but if you're interested in AI already it's a good app that can do a lot more than just language role play and chat.

I use Duolingo but I don't like the direction they are going. They're quite a bit like predatory Pay to Win games these days, imo - especially on the app. The web version is OK (for now). However, removing the forums wasn't a great move and I really still don't like the new linear skill path. Which is why I didn't renew my subscription to super after two years. I totally get that they have to make money, which is why I don't use an AdBlocker on their site, watch commercials for hearts on the app and, in the past, even subscribed. However, whenever Duolingo is throwing their commercial for Super at me, it reminds me that all their "free learning for everyone" is just a hollow phrase. The ad actually tells you that they're gimping the learning experience on purpose so they can sell you Super. That's devious.

The forums have been useful but too often now the answers are not related to a particular exercise because they have been altered - Duo for me is becoming less useful than lessons on KZbin where I can still ask questions and get an answer from other viewers or perhaps even the teacher. I can also repeat all the lessons from the very beginning - Duo treats returning to old lessons as if I already know it! Why would I return to old lessons if that was the case? Yes, Duo was useful for getting started and it is more convenient when it comes to doing exercises and getting instant feedback,but I am increasingly relying on other sources - not sure I bother trying to reach that 1000 day streak now. (That would be in the autumn). There are many good language learning apps with different strengths but they demand payment in order to progress from rather early on: i think it is the main reason reason why Duolingo is so popular... but it will change if they keep putting more features behind an expensive paywall!

As an Android user, Duolingo seems more similar to the desktop than the iOS mobile version like we didn’t even have the path separated into groups until like a few weeks ago, and legendary courses are still limited 3 hearts unlike unlimited on iOS… also since I have an iPad, but an android phone, on iOS you can drag your answers around, but on android and computer you can’t and you have to rewrite the whole sentence… and achievements slightly differ between versions, like iOS has: complete x amount of legendary lessons achievement, but android doesn’t, and vice versa… it’s confusing.

So you are dealing with a ChatGPT implementation that is specialized in teaching a language. I can see how a user who only would use ChatGPT for learning languages can see true value in this.

I understand your point, but in the longterm it's normal that they make you pay for features, at the end of the day it is their business and they would like to gain money. We are not obliged to use this app, there are plenty of options out there. But yes, they may have added additional features and not just make the previous features paid.

I gave it a go for a month. You do get 2 free weeks of trial and then you’ve 2 weeks after the purchase date to claim refund from Apple Store. The role play is good and it follows what you’re saying but it’s not super flexible. For example if you say you went to the cinema last night it will ask a question about the movie but it won’t really follow your lead if you’re asking it questions. The explain errors feature I found hit and miss. I don’t think it always explained the error I made, it gave weird examples that weren’t adding value and it wasn’t very exhaustive in the answers. I got a family plan (we’re all on Super now) but it didn’t work for everybody. I think I’ll wait until it’s more developed and give it a go again.

As a linguist, i thanked you mentioned the correct term, no this is not AI but Machine learning. The problem with machine learning nowadays is like a child with a shape toy, knowing how to fix a shape to a hole is not that complex. Language needs contextual and semantic information that should be evaluated by a human being, machine learning doesn't understand the nuance of meaning or context-sensible responds, just predictability. So, even us, linguists haven't reach to a point to understand fully this intricacies, because semantics and pragmatics aren't as predictable as morphology (how to combine words, suffixes, sentences, etc), then machine learning is still working in a blind spot, matching patterns without really understanding what they means. And that's why this is not an AI, just machine learning

Isn't AI artificial intelligence, anything that appears intelligent to some degree, and is artificial? Such as machine learning. To me, AI is a very broad term, while machine learning is a more specific term. It's basically saying "It's not cutlery, it's a fork".
@dentescare
@dentescare Жыл бұрын
@@Liggliluff no, that's not how intelligence works, Siri isn't intelligent bc it knows your life patterns. That underestimated what actually conform an intelligent being. A dog isn't intelligent bc it's happy when you pet it, that's just a reaction to predictable patterns. And Google translate doesn't understand the meaning behind translating a ancient philosophical extract, it just predicted what it's most likely to be replaced in that morphological context

i am a little mad that they took away the forum feature entirely, but im not mad they took that function away from the free version. capitalism babayyy (on another note, i bought the super subscription for the whole year by accident one time, canceled it, but the benefits never went away. the subscription ended abt three years ago, and the only noticeable thing that went away was the special app cover. i’ve keep checking my bank account to see if i’m tripping, but they haven’t taken any more money and i still have unlimited hearts and i can test out of any unit if i want)(pls do not tell the owl)

I get the impression that although you’re not sponsored by Duolingo, you are well & truly all-in with them thanks to your 7 year streak. What scenario would make you let that slide? I’m looking at some options, and for the money, Rocket is now looking more appealing - it has the AI ‘role play’ option.

It's like 10 euros a month (considering you buy the yearly subscription). Sure, it's kind of expensive, but you get all super features + AI powered stuff. I think it's really not that expensive, especially compared to other kinds of subscription such as Spotify premium (which I will never pay for).

Considering chat gpt is a free open AI...I dont see why I should pay an extortionate amount extra to use it within a language learning app. Especially an app that was pushing it's luck charging what it does for super duolingo when the benefits are really really really not worth the amount of money you pay for it
@christianb9077

No, it's not free if a company wants to use it in their products. You can use it (to some extent) personally for free.
@joshuafp5727
@joshuafp5727 Жыл бұрын
@@christianb9077 I know it's not free for the company to use, but their price per person is not justifiable. As you say, gpt is free to an extent for the public to use anyway so paying for its integration is just not necessary, the only thing that offers is convenience. Duolingo super isn't expensive but it's expensive for what it is and what it offers, Duolingo max is just a smack in the face to the consumers, $30 a month or $170 a year for chat gpt integration is laughable. The only good deed they're doing is keeping the app free by choice and not pay walling it like most apps

For me the forum was useless. Normally there would be multiple opinions inside a thread and since there was no teacher or moderator to give the correct answer, in the end was just a pile of guesses by the users. Normally what I do when I got something wrong is to just google about it. Yes, it takes time to find the answer sometimes, but you always learn something new in the end.

This is what I think happened (I am working software engineer so I have a bit of a feeling what typical things happen in a software company) - a Team of developers or product owner comes up with an idea for a new product. - Management doesn't like it,. Reason, it would not be profitable based on zero facts. - On a Friday afternoon company drink a developer talks with some guys of the Sales department and pitches the idea(if the company culture is a healthy one this could happen) - Sales department have a brainstorm session about how to increase profit. They come up with this brand new idea (or did it came from the dev team). - Sales department, let's see if customers are willing to pay for this overpriced product that should have been a trial to begin with the differentiate ourselves from the competition. - New product pushed to app stores and within a few months a good product dies. Also they reintroduce the forums.
