my opinion on this film is that it wasn't great, but it would have sucked even if it was animated in 2D because its problems run deeper than just "CGI anime bad" i.e. the film having no third act and essentially just extending the second act out for an hour and then cutting straight to an epilogue and skipping over all the actual character development it feels unfinished

For me Miyazaki's films are all masterpieces! Visual poems, metaphors, uncompromising art! Another thing... Earwig and the witch is not bad at all, there are some parts that look really good, very interesting characters, I remember them all, it's fun, entertaining, mostly for kids. The thing that I like the most is that all the magical things that happen can be in the little girl's mind, seen from her perspective...I recommend it! People, please, just don't compare this to Pixar or to Miyazaki!!!

What probably would have helped is getting some assistance, like how TMS Entertainment was given Marza Animation Planet as a subsidiary and then they went on to produce that absolutely badass Lupin the Third: The First cg movie.

I think they actually captured the feeling of Diana Wynne Jones' character in this film. Her characters are oftentimes deeply flawed and are not written in the way to make the readers like them. Some of them grows a little bit, but they mostly remain themselves (means their flaws won't just go away because of the "growth"). I haven't read this particular novel of hers, but I can totally imagine a manipulative little girl as main character in her story. Howl's moving castle is great, but the characters are much cleaner than the original. Miyazaki practically cast another group of characters for his film. It's more of "a Miyazaki movie" than "the adaptation of Diana Wynne Jones' book". Love both versions btw. This film isn't great, but I can see the potential here if view it as an experiment.

Have watched EATW three times, fansub as first, English dub as second plus Blu-ray disk as thir. Must say it's just the most underrated 3D animation/anime work! Frankly, living to present, there's only the most humble but far beyond precious the meaning while cherish as still. Yup, it hugely helps me as being new supporting to my life. 😉 Very wonderful after the ending, even this is the legacy from Jones that's still very enough. Author couldn't award of it but? Frankly, nothing to fear death anymore by myself. It also expressed by Tales For Earthsea. To this, so deeply believe Goro Miyazaki had through of it before things getting happen in reality. Pretty plain but it's the essence for life from ordinary. Good will be more better, anything bad and negotiate etc blah-blah-blah also turning to become very good in pure positive the direction as people see at all.

"Why are we holding Studio (J)Ghibli to this god-tier standard, when they just started doing 3d cg?" because their first 2d movie was a freaking masterpiece lol. You might say: hey, cel animation has been around for ages when they made Castle in the Sky. But honestly, so has 3d animation at this point. They should have tested it more with some short movies or some side projects first instead of making their first full 3dcgi project a full blown "G(J)hibli movie". After they mastered the craft or at least would be more comfortable with the software THEN make the movie. I truly understand where the disappointment comes from, from the audience/critics. I enjoyed your review none the less.

the animation was only half the problem, even if it was all in 2d the story and character problems would still be massive

@@onwiyu5343 Yes, but I was specifically talking about the animation because I was adressing a point they made. If you wanna talk writing that's a whole nother can of worms.

It's a TV movie for children, used as a test run for Ghibli's new CG team, Miyazaki had a lot of the other staff at Ghibli had already been in the indrustry for a long time, Castle In The Sky was only a big debut for the studio, Miyazaki and Takahata were already legends in the industry for there work on the Lupin series, World Masterpiece Theatre and Future Boy Conan so for Earwig to just be fine and not revolutionaize the industry, is to be expected when you put it in context

You don’t suppose Hayao Miyazaki has disowned his own son after making two of Ghibli’s worst films ever made? After shaming his company a second time, I feel him saying out loud, “I HAVE NO SON!”

I was wondering how Ghibli had made a family friendly remake of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. They Didn't..
