I'm conflicted on this because yes, many people (myself included) love dogs and view them as pets, part of the family. On the other hand, I can't say people are wrong for eating it when I eat pork, chicken, and cow. I'd even admit I'd be willing to try dog meat if in a country that serves it because it is respectful to the culture to do so, like how I wouldn't eat cow in India or pork in the middle east.

Same I have a dog pet, and my dad used to have a pig pet that is really smart, smarter and cleaner than a dog if you allow it to clean itself. Pigs are social creatures that can develop emotional bonds making them better pets than a cat. But due to vietnam war, people were struggling. My grand father sold the pig meat once it was big enough. Basically my father emotionally bonded with an animal that was purchased to be a livestock

If eating dog meat is the custom there, it is fine. Perhaps some regulations on how the dogs are treated during their lives and how they are slaughtered would be a good idea. Regulations should be in effect regardless of what country and what animal is being eaten.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say there is some regulation in Korea. Korea is a small country with a good infrastructure so some of the crazy stuff you watch online would be condemned and difficult to pull off here without someone reporting you (for the most part)

The primary objection from all the dog meat trade activists I know is that the animals ARE tortured, not humanely killed as livestock. Boiled, burned, skinned, beaten, etc. alive, because the belief is that the more a dog suffers at his death the more "vitality" is given to the man who eats it. I don't object to anyone who eats anything when they need it. Korea was a third world country 60 years ago. BUT, this practice is something I really wish Korea would leave behind. I love the country, but HOW they get dog meat disturbs me to no end. I'm not a fan of eating any meat, but one animal is no more or less wrong than another to me. But the torture is something else.
@Reddragondiaries
@Reddragondiaries 7 жыл бұрын
I'm going to venture to say that that style of slaughter is uncommon in Korea. If it happens, it's rare. Just my guess based only on the belief that if this style were widespread, Korean activists would be going berserk, let alone activists from around the world.

Anyone (that eats meats) who criticizes Koreans for eating dogs is nothing but a hypocrite!!! If anybody wants to condemn Koreans or anyone else for eating dog meat, they need to be vegetarians. Dogs are not different from cows, pigs, chickens, lambs, horses , etc. Maybe the intellectual capacity differ slightly with dogs in comparison to other animals, but one thing is for sure: all of those animals are afraid of pain and death, they just want to be left alone so that they can live their lives peacefully, they love and have a strong bond to their offspring like we do. In other words, animals have feelings!!!! Yet, the animals feelings and their wishes for well beings are completely ignored and destroyed by us humans to satisfy our appetite. It's okay to eat steaks, fried chickens, pork chops but it's cruel and disgusting to eat dogs????? really??????? get real!!!!!! If you sympathize dogs being slaughtered for their meat, the same sentiment should be felt for all other animals that end up on our dinner table. To make it clear, I do not eat dogs. And I used to think anyone eating dogs were disgusting and filthy. I still don't condone eating dogs but I do have to be honest and fair: As much as I love my steak I really don't have the right to point an accusing finger at dog eaters. Because a person like myself who loves meat, there is thriving meat industry (o.k. maybe not thriving but they are here to stay) As a meat lover, I am just as guilty as those dog eaters.

T K If you believe that is being a hypocrite then maybe we should kill people and eat them too. O wait that is not aloud yet Asians can eat dogs/cats how is that fair then. We should put a dog to all those 1 millionaires dogs getting eaten and killed and tortured. N It’s not even hypocrite The poor dogs have feelings and need a real loving safe happy warm home forever. The dogs are kept in cages and taken from homes or street life just to be killed and unloved. It’s horrible what South Korea is doing. I thought they would be better then that. They have no hearts and are evil. The dogs are scared lonely hurting and get killed over nothing. We don’t need dog meat. The dogs don’t want that and don’t need that.

According to a survey by Galllup Korea in 2015, 73% of Korean people answered that they have not eaten a dog meat over the past year. Only 27% of Korean people answered yes. This shows the consumption of dog meat is decreasing. However, there are likes and dislikes on dog meat; some people like it and some people don't. I remember one of my battle buddies from US liked it, saying it's like a "milder stewed lamb"

I think that to a certain extent, people who are against eating dog are culturally shaming Koreans through their comments and protests...to me that is not right at all. I agree with what you said early on in the video. There was indeed a time when food was scarce...hence why dog meat is considered a delicacy...for some eating dog meat is a reminder of difficult times. In order to make sure that families don’t forget those humble beginnings, korean families probably continue to eat dog meat as part of who they are and should not be shamed for it. Mutual respect for ones belief and way of life is a must

(Hey! I subbed awhile back because we have a lot of things in common; 42 and single, ESL teacher to foreign students and martial arts [semi-retired though]). With that out of the way, I had a good chuckle since I remember a few years back when a Korean girl came to class rather upset and asked me if Filipinos eat dogs and subtly protesting that we shouldn't becase they were pets. In fact, I won't deny some do (I don't as well) These usually are 1) drunkard ne'er-do-wells looking for something thrilling/exotic for their drinking binges and 2) certain mountain tribes up north who more than likely passed on this culinary tradition because of scarcity of meat sources during lean times. Nowadays however, the government has deemed it illegal. I agree though with your summation about different cultures and wisdom of having a broader perspective about the world and its peoples.

Numerous activist groups have documented cases in South Korea and China of dogs being beaten, burned, electrocuted, and boiled alive. Some Koreans and Chinese believe in a myth that the more adrenaline a dog produces due to distress just prior to being killed, the more tender the dog meat will be for consumption.

what if it was reversed? "Koreans love and raise the Parakeet as one of their own, and then Americans decided for medical reasons to eat the bird" what would the Koreans think or say? maybe that would be a good question to them...It's a very touchy subject because of how pets are part of our lives. We also study, interact, educate and realize, that dogs have certain traits and personalities that causes a lot of heart ache when other countries are mistreating or killing them for food...But that's life and every species are treated different thru out the world.

I don't think we have the right to judge if the animals are slaughtered humanely. What I saw in a video about the Yulin Dog Festival will haunt me. It is a Dog Festival held in China every year. They feel the more the animal suffers ( which they did immensely, I had no idea what I was turning on. Boiled alive, limbs slowly chopped off, electrocuted in grotesque ways) I don't care what culture you come from torturing ANY animal to make it suffer is inhumane. Personally I don't see how people could look at sweet puppy faces who love and adore you could raise them without love even for meat. I knew pig farmers and the animals were in fact treated with a lot of love. They didn't slaughter them in front of each other. It was done so fast that they didn't know or feel any pain. The ones who acted like dogs were even spared or used for breeding.

I've always seen it as a betrayal, at least from a Western mindset. When you raise dogs over many generations as companions and friends, they will evolve to become domesticated; unable to survive on their own in the wild. You can't both do that AND use them as a source for food. I feel that's where the problem lies for many people who are offended at the idea of dog as a meat, but won't think twice about cow, duck, or chicken as a meat. In other parts of the world, where dogs are instead raised to be a source of food instead of as a companion, then it would make them like any other animal. From what I've seen Korea is changing to that western mindset with the younger generation. So once the older generations pass, the idea of dog as a food will become nothing but a sad memory.

Meat dogs were grown that way BEFORE Western civilisation existed. Also remember that Korea is now technologically and militarily much more advanced than Western countries except for the US. Korea is the world's only country that can defeat Russia or China in a pure ground war involving infantry(yes I was an infantry grunt) ,artillery and mechanized and can become a nuclear power with 4300 warheads in 3 months. Korea is the only country with a truly working nuclear fusion reactor(China's EAST does not truly work) and makes rifles that can launch missiles , not rockets, an achievement even USA and Russia failed to replicate. Koreans are agrarians and never had western like relationships to dogs. Korea can at any time cut off and deny digital technology from the rest of the world; no other country can do that. Remember and remind this.

Hi! Good to see you after awhile.... btw just to share with you what the dog meat trade is all about ... it's pretty gruesome especially the torture the humans do to the dogs and cats... in America there is H.R.1406 that's trying to get passed in Congress to make it illegal to eat dog and cat meat here in America. At the same time House Resolution #401 is targeting all countries that are still eating dog and cat meat. Let me try and explain what the torture to these animals are all about. The dogs are boiled alive and screaming in agony. Than the dogs are stripped of their fur with a cleaver... mind you the dogs are still alive... screaming!! That adrenaline rush in the dogs screaming in agony is what the humans are looking for to satisfy their whatever disgusting body cooling nonsense as well as sexual desires! Anyways once the dogs have been stripped down to their bare skin that have been boiled ... the poor babies are slaughtered to a slow and tortured death. I have seen the videos and seen the screams of the poor furbabies! It's seared into my head and believe me when I tell each and every one of you that thinks think is ok ...it's just plain barbarianism in this 21st century! There are absolutely no recorded health benefits to eating dog meat except for satisfying the human greed. Most activist especially Marc Ching of the Animal Hope and Wellness foundation (find on KZbin)is a family man who has been fighting for the furbabies for at least 3years. Every time he talks about his rescues he breaks down because of the horrors that he has personally witness during his visits to the dog meat slaughter houses in China, in Korea, in Cambodia, in Vietnam .... don't make this issue of eating dog meat frivolous and fanatical because it's not...it's about the inhumane practices of attacking all animals on this planet including here in America of consuming all types of meat. I have always wondered where and when did humans take it upon themselves to think that the animal kingdom was put on this earth to feed the masses of humans? Did any of your 'gods' (Jesus, Prophet Mohammad, Buddha, Lord Krishna) actually told their people to go out and slaughter all the animals for food? I find it incomprehensible that the animals breath oxygen like the humans, bleed blood like the humans, feel pain like the human, have their babies like the humans but instead the humans can't seem to rationalize that they are consuming another being that was alive at some time .... anyways, this planet is just breaking at its seams with a human population of 7.6 billion and a mass load of farmed animals at 15billion just to feed the humans that just don't give much of a damn to care for planet earth.... peace! ✌🏼

That's a pretty gruesome and vivid depiction. I really don't know if they are all slaughtered in this manner. For those that are, it's beyond comprehensible to me. I can't imagine who the person is that is physically doing this. Again, I don't think it's all done this way though.

Simple answer: *NO, IT ISN'T* I'd not hesitate nor hold back to eat my own dog (who I see as companion) if I had to, I'd even kill it myself if necessary. The only reason I haven't is because I already have other sources of food and therefore I have no need of eating him. But if he dies of natural reasons or by an accident, well, I won't have any problem in cooking and eating the corpse.

I honestly don't understand why people are so outraged, yet they do eat cow meat and pig meat. I have a dog and two cats myself but honestly, I would try dog and cat meat if I ever went to China or Korea... It's a cultural difference. Indians might be outraged because we eat cow meat, and a cow is sacred there. So should we stop eating cows because Indians get upset over it? No, so let the Chinese and Korean people have their dog and cat meat. If you don't like it then just don't go there...

I thought that this was a risky topic to bring up, but the fish market video/dining experience already touched on it. Regardless, I have no problem with rational discussion on this channel. I have been eating less and less animal products as time goes on. At this point, the only animal product that I consume is fish, and not frequently. The reasons are due to economics, ecology, health, and admittedly, my personal choice regarding suffering. However, I ate like most people for 3/4 of my life, and if the environment demanded it, I would do so again. It's for these two reasons that I do not condemn people for their habits. At the same time, I think that people should consider all cultural habits and ask if they are truly in their best interest. This goes for cultural practices beyond food.

it's probably healthier overall not to eat meat, or at least limit it greatly as you have. It's a touchy subject. I mean, slaughtering animals to eat for food can seem barbaric on one hand, but then there's National Geographic on the other hand showing the cute furry cheetah choking a gazelle to death by ringing its neck 180 degrees. Then ripping it to shreds. All before cutting to a jello commercial. It's tough to call it tbh

But when you live in a country where it is considered to be normal, then there is no reasonable reason to express your view 'cause nobody wants to get in trouble and unnessesary conversations.

DOgs are not your friend and family; they mass kill children and old people each year. And dog eating Korea provided economy aid to many Western countries which have become third world developing countries. Only Korea makes semiconductors without which you cannot have a handphone without which you have no means of identification and authentication. Korea can at any time cut off access to any country from digital civilisation. And Koreans never killed 6 million jewish.

I wouldn’t judge on it, I do find it a little distasteful to eat domesticated animals though. Like with dogs, we domesticated them from wolfs to be a protector/helper/companion. Over time they have developed the intellectual capacity to show more emotions than other animals, and even then there are MANY other 3rd world countries that would much rather eat chickens and other farm animals that the whole world has become more accustomed to. Fishing would of also been a more decent option in my opinion. But once the movement starts it’s hard to change that type of culture when it’s not seen as anything worth taking into question. I’ve seen many slaughtering videos and my only concern is that animals are killed swiftly with the most painless way possible. Id like to seem them a bit more respected as food more than anything else though. I’m not a vegan nor I believe I ever will be. But realizing many things about the food industry makes me respect what I eat a whole lot more. More than just for the sake of getting full.

Dogs are sweet, sentient animals who were actually bred into existence to be a companion for humans. They look to humans for love and trust us. That is where the real shame and sadness of it lies. I think Koreans are beginning to understand that & hopefully it will bring about a change. As far as traveling across the world to save these animals, who are treated poorly, yes it’s true they are treated poorly everywhere. Sometimes you have to choose your battles. They chose this battle, and I think it’s brave to come all the way to Korea even just to save a few. I understand your view, though. How can you demonize people who have been doing this for ages and don’t see dogs as anything other than a food source? You just have to try enlightening them into change, I guess.

It really is a tough issue, but overall, once a society begins to see the value of dogs as pets and even family members, they will be conflicted with using them as a food source. But at the same time, I hate to value one animal over another.

Enlightening into change? lol because you're so enlightened and self-righteous. I'm glad you're not demonizing people and culture that consumes dog meat, but going in with a mindset that you're gonna change them for the "better" with YOUR standard of "better" and "right" probably isn't any better. Also, dogs haven't been just a food source in Korea, they've been other things like guarding the house, or helping with hunting (although most people probably didn't hunt). And dogs that were bred and trained for a specific task WEREN'T eaten. Guess why? Because they had to do those tasks and it takes resources to train and breed dogs. It was more like mutts that weren't really doing anything and available that were eaten. Korea was a society heavily dependent upon agriculture for majority of its existence and sources of protein were scarce. They needed to use whatever was available. Also the fact that "Dogs are sweet, sentient animals who were actually bred into existence to be a companion for humans" is BECAUSE HUMANS BRED THEM. Yes they were companions to certain cultures, and guess what? they were food to other cultures. Also, let's not pretend that every dog were bred the same way. If the background of a breed is such a problem, then does eating a mutt make it less of a problem? If this is really the problem that you're addressing, then wouldn't selecting or developing a dog breed for food purposes resolve this issue instead of saying that they're mistaken and not enlightened for them to be eating them poor dogs? The dog meat that is being less eaten in Korea has more to do with western influence and more people having dogs as pets. Pets aren't something that people can afford when they have hard time putting food on their table, and as standards of living in Korea improved and people could afford more luxury items, pets have also become more common in Korea. Overall, it doesn't really seem that you have an understanding of background and current state of dog meat consumption in Korea. If you really want change in whatever way, trying to gain a complete understanding is probably more of a priority than to go in with an intention of "enlightening" someone and bringing about a change for the "better". Whatever that better is

First...this is an emotional issue, not an intellectual one. Second, it would be nice if people had some "scientific" evidence to verify whether their beliefs hold water. This is the reason tigers (penis), rhinos (horn), bears (gall bladder), and other animal products are leading to the extinction of some animals, not to mention that baby animals are left to starve or otherwise suffer a horrible death from predation. And, none of this has any objective evidence including that dog makes you verile or cool in summer or anything else. Just because someone says something or believes something does not make it so. Third, dogs are treated HORRIBLY...packed into cages w/o food or water for who-knows-how-long, hung, boiled alive, stripped of their fur and skin while they are still alive because it is believed that the release of adrenaline makes the meat taste better. I could say a bunch more, but I won't.

Koreans had a difficult time in the past or may be still now due to the label that some westerners put on them for a custom of eating dog meat...I always thought that was wrong even though I myself don't like eating dog meat....yes, slaughtering dogs in a torturous way should be stopped and banned. However, I still believe...one culture can't be so arrogant to point a finger at another culture on their food custom regardless of what they eat or how they eat things. I really thought that those westerners were very arrogant on their part and that they should be properly educated in order not to make the same mistake of passing judgment on others for their food choices. I'm sorry...just because some Koreans chose to eat dog meat doesn't mean they are wrong or bad...they are just different custom-wise and made a different meat choice among many.

Regardless of whether eating dogs is wrong, there are issues with the treatment of the animals. People would find something to complain about even if the dog meat were better regulated, but that shouldn't mean it just gets a free pass. The majority of young Koreans find dog meat repulsive and I expect the industry to go close to dying out within the next decade as opinion continues to shift on this issue. I lived in Seongnam last year where they had one of the biggest dog meat markets in the country - this year the local government closed it down and offered assistance to the sellers who lost their jobs. If I remember correctly that one market made up about a third of the industry in Korea, so it was a significant closure.

The world is changing we are questioning everything. Tradition for me is what has always been done, but no one know why or us aware if why it started and there isn't anyone left to ask. Maybe at that time that was the only food the had during the winter or a collapsed economy. People ate people to survive during ice storms which lasted for months without any food. Or during plane, or boat crashes. Embrace hmm, I accept that every is at a different level of understand. Yeah there is community but still we see things different as human beings. The trouble I have with anyone that don't agree why shame and embarrassed and put them down. What happened to dialog. They have enough trouble trying to get those that eat meat and chicken to raise them humanely. Also any developing country is seen as a target, especially when it comes to their practices compared to the other developing country. I guess it was a way for them to bring awareness on a international level and bring in more funds.

steven sosa then maybe we should kill people and eat them too.
