James, you should absolutely have an eBay store. You have almost 22k subscribers like me who watch your videos and at the end think "Now I want that comic!" I know I already suggested this in an earlier thread (when you asked members for ideas) but I think you could tie in your videos to your ebay store and make some sales. Look at it from my perspective: I buy comics all the time on Ebay. Do you know how many Ebay sellers I know by name because they have their own KZbin channel too? Zero. Be the first! Happy New Year!

Just be aware that those Ebay percentages are misleading. The Ebay seller fee for comic books is currently 12% for a basic store, but that doesn't mean $1.20 on a $10 book. Back in July of 2022, Ebay now applies that 12% fee to the TOTAL sale, which includes sales tax and shipping. So, with that, you're actually paying around $1.80 to $1.90, depending on how much you charge for shipping. That's getting mighty close to 20% on that $10 book. This obviously affects small dollar books more than big ones, but it's something to be aware of. Good luck James!

James, I think of Ebay selling as more passive selling. Set it and forget it. Whatnot would be more active. You have to be involved in the livestream while selling your items. Because of your large KZbin presence you would not have an issue selling on Whatnot. You could advertise your streams here and probably end up with 100+ people at your Whatnot sales. Smaller Whatnot sellers are they one's that struggle at first because they have to build up their audience. They may be losing money or just breaking even on their first few auctions. I currently sell on Ebay. I don't have the desire or the inventory to try selling on Whatnot.

Are you unaware that setting up at a comic con has literally hundreds to thousands of dollars of fees? As a professional convention dealer it NEVER costs me less than $500 to sell at even the smallest convention. Fleas markets also cost $100-$200 per month to set up also. There is no such thing as no cost, no risk selling.

First off, thanks for doing this video. I enjoy your content quite a bit. I have been selling comic for the last 30 years. I currently have an eBay store and I do conventions. I am looking into selling on other platforms as well. If time allows, then there is nothing to keep you from selling on multiple platforms. eBay does give the most exposure. People can search and buy at any time of day or night. The costs are lower when you take full advantage of their eBay stores and being a Top Rated Seller. But you also have to deal with packing and shipping. I'm not 100% sure how Whatnot works so I can't speak to that. Gas, hotel, booth / table fees, food, displays, maintenance, theft, taxes and time are all things that need to be considered when doing conventions. It all adds up. The cost of doing some conventions is higher than eBay. There is also the chance that you might bomb at a show and sell less than your cost. I have about the same amount of sales in Milwaukee as I do in St. Louis. But Milwaukee is only an hour drive so my costs are less. My cost for doing the local flee market is low, but so is the attendance and the amount I make. Also your customers are limited to the ones that attend during the hours for the event. So I also use my time at cons to drive people to my eBay store and restock on product. It's trial and error to learn what shows and cons are worth your time and money.

Happy New Year! Thanks for your thoughts. I sell privately, seller to buyer, first. I also work at a collectibles store and manage the comic books, so the brick & mortar helps our cause. Flea markets and garage sales are good avenues too. I personally avoid selling comics on eBay, but I do sell DVDs, CDs, books, etc…almost always unopened in new condition.

I've been buying / selling on eBay for 20yrs as an individual for a wide range of items. While I don't enjoy all of the changes eBay has gone through over the years, it remains incredibly easy to use with a LOT of reach. I've adapted and my prices typically reflect the fees & shipping. I also enjoy the feedback system, while not perfect, it provides some level of accountability.

The only complaint for eBay's fees is they take 13% off the total sale which includes both the tax and shipping tacked onto the sale value, so in reality it's like 15%. It's completely scummy for them to do it. I understand shipping because what people used to do to get around eBay's fees was to sell something for like $1 but had $20-$50 for shipping but you can't tell me that the taxes you have to add to our sale should count towards your cut.

Ebay sucks for a average seller that's not a social media influencer. I can't a sell a NM+ book that's only $20 but a influencer can sale a beat to hell found in the mud same copy of a book for $500 so fees are out the window. Hard to sale anything now
@randytusha1

PS: on ebay the actual fees are closer to 20%. You have forgotten listing fees, BIN fees, and payment processing fees. And selling using any online payment processor such as PayPal or Square has fees that exceed 4% on average when you include the per transaction fee and the percentage fee to process the sale. Businesses just have costs so you have to build that into your prices.
@jheggemeyer
@jheggemeyer Жыл бұрын
No listing fees, no BIN fees, for your first 250 listings per month, and the payment processing is built into that 13%. If you have higher volume, the store route is definitely worth it for the additional free listings and lower final value fees, on top of the other tools made available.

It's very easy to run an eBay store with comic books, I have two of them and you've bought from me from one of them! You can ask your price and wait till it sells, accept offers, put it on sale to move faster, or have auctions. You will wake up in the morning and have sales. Calculate 17-18% in total fees. It will take time to build a following unless you're only selling keys. Whatnot fees, you have to take into account each sale has a .30 cent transaction fee (there's no combined transaction fee), on a $10 sale that's 3%, you will sell for less than on eBay, and you have to physically be doing the auction to make sales.

Hi James, thanks for doing this video. I like all your content and appreciate that you tackle comics from a number of different angles. Fees on Ebay Australia are 12.25% and the monthly statement is very comprehensive, with data for each sale; Ebay also takes care of sales tax. As I'm not a dealer but simply selling parts of my collection when I replace individual issues with collected editions, I can put up with the obstacles such as poor design of parts of the site as well as the fees because in the end, I'll have money in the bank which I would not have had if I'd kept the comics. In Australia Craigslist, Facebook Market Place and other buy/sell sites are not very well developed, hence not heavily populated by buyers and sellers.

Can’t even leave a negative post on the bidder. Doesn’t happen often but when it does on a big book….that sucks for me. I’ve used myslabs and Shortboxed and like them (and use them) but they don’t have the audience of Ebay. Perhaps using multiple fronts is the best but I’m just a hustler, not a full time dealer. One other benefit of setting up your LLC will be deductible business operating expenses you have likely not prior deducted as they were “personal.” Things like : bags and boards, online value or inventory site monthly fees ( GoCollect, GPA, CLZ, etc..), insurance, your eBay store subscription fee, comic boxes and mailers, packing tape, a portion of your internet fees, computer anti-virus, deductions for any storage lockers, short and long boxes, and a home office deduction of your rent or mortgage and utilities, insurance and property tax (if you work out of your home). Likely with all these deductions and your accurate revenue and income reporting- you will be saving quite a bit and sleeping with your eyes closed as they say. Definitely be compliant with your tax collection and proper reporting. None of this should be taken as tax advice and I am not a professional tax advisor.

I dipped a toe in the WhatNot scene last year, I am not on the influencer level and found competing for views during prime hours or selling during off hours was not worth my time and while the fees are lower than eBay, live 30 second auctions with 10-20 viewers nets more losses than gains. Even with good key books, i was getting less than I would have playing the waiting game on eBay. All the while I am seeing people overpaying on books like crazy on the WhatNot influencer channels, and it just makes me cringe. I agree with you 100%, eBay is the easiest way to sell still and I have gone back to just doing an eBay store. Just easier and I get more value back from my books than WhatNot being a smaller collector/seller.

I'm having more issues with buyer fraud lately on eBay. More so than in the past several years certainly. The old "the grade isn't what you said in the listing" nonsense after they purposely damage the book slightly once they get it. They then ask for a return knowing that you'll have to pay for return shipping. So, you just give them a refund and they keep the book. Had it happen twice in the last 3 weeks. I'm going to start going to local flea markets in the spring/ summer to sell my books instead.

switch your return shipping to buyer pays. I've had this happen some with high end cards, but I have never been forced to pay return shipping ever. Your listing is a contract and generally ebay will make it apply to the buyer. Return's accepted unless it's buyer remorse...

Ebay is going to give you the widest reach, but their fees end up closer to 15% on higher priced items. I just sold a comic for $200 this weekend ($212 with postage). Ebay charges fees on the postage, and on the (in this case) $16.75 tax... neither of which I make a penny on, so the total ebay fee way $29.89 on a $200 sale (14.9%). If they were fair, they'd charge the regular fee on the item, and the credit card 3.5% fee of the shipping and tax. If you sell lower priced comics on ebay, say a $5.00 comic on with $4.00 postage, you end up paying an effective fee of 25%.

issue was they had to stop the people who used to sell things for grossly undervalue but have shipping set at like $25+ to avoid paying fees on the majority of their sales. I just set everything at free shipping and put what I'd pay for shipping in the asking price since eBay also promotes items with free shipping more often than items that charge shipping. The only thing that's absolutely scummy and deceptive is the fact they take you for a ride on counting the tax as part of their fee. If I could, I'd just ban anyone buying from a tax-heavy state from making purchases from me. Can't imagine how many times a buyer from CA or NY made my eBay fee look closer to 20% than 13% just because their tax cut is atrocious.

@@papi-sauce Does that include paypal too? I haven't sold on ebay in almost twenty years. I guess I should have conveyed that my M.O. is to take a bit less than what my net on ebay would be and save all the hassle involved . It's worked quite well for me the times I've done it.

Just fyi about eBay fees. eBay takes 13% of the purchase price in fees and eBay takes 13% of the money that the buyer pays the seller for shipping and eBay charges the seller a 13% fee based on the total tax that eBay collects from the buyer for the purchase. So sellers are actually paying more like 14% or 15%.

The problem with eBay right now is so many folks sell stuff at cut throat prices cause they need money now. That’s another reason why prices are dropping so fast I’ve been buying tons. Now I’m worried about these idiots spending another 1.7 trillion cost of essentials is gonna go up more. Just means more desperate people are gonna sell even cheaper just to make ends meet.

As a buyer, I like ebay the best cause if something goes wrong ie; lost package, damaged package, counterfeit item, I found I will get reimbursed or taken care of by ebay and/or the sellers. Other sites I've been burned and told sorry dude buyer beware! That's just my humble opinion

*_I do not believe for a second that anyone who has sold me books at a con or a stand has paid a dime of "Sales Tax" on the books I purchased. The Sales Tax they calculate at the sale just goes in their pocket with the rest. There's a reason why Cash Is King and why Cash always gets you a discount. And if it doesn't, "OK, let's use the MasterCard then and I'll need a written receipt"._* *_There are some new tax rules coming to the US specifically because of the comic book boom; I think everything over $600 is required to pay a new sales tax. If that is the case, a lot of books in the $600-700 range might start costing $599. They expect Billion$ in annual taxes from collectable sales._* *_I'd look this up and read it carefully. It doesn't really affect me, so I have only glanced over an article._*

The tax applies to combined annual sales over $600. Doesn't matter how much each individual item sells for. And many vendors may get away with not paying sales tax on cash sales, but technically, that is tax evasion, so do so at your own risk.

If possible, Facebook Marketplace is the best place to sell. No fees and no tax. Everything under the table. Only negative is you are stuck with just selling in your area so unless you are in a big city you may not sell a collection.

One issue to be careful with on eBay is their fee structure is a lie - they also charge their fee percentage on the taxes they asses and gather and any shipping fees in the listing. This is particularly impactful on higher-dollar sales. A recent sold example for an RPG book: listed fee %: 14.6; sold amount: $70; Fees based on: $76.65 (sold amount + taxes); FVF percentage: $11.19; so actual imputed fee amount is 15.9857%. FVF flat fee: $0.30 - including that fee ($11.49) on the $70 sale is a 'true' imputed fee percentage of 16.41%. And, of course, eBay buries all this information as deep behind their piss-poor reporting as possible. Changes the math on the 'best sales venue' pretty considerably. Not a killer, but certainly something to be aware of.

One way to offset some of the eBay fees is to buy shipping through them, typically at a 20-25% discount off of USPS rates. But yes, net eBay fees are greater than 13%. Mine average around 14.5% after shipping savings.
@sfq7675
@sfq7675 Жыл бұрын
@@kevinrcolvin6301 I don't really think of the shipping as savings because the discount isn't meaningful. PayPal shipstation is the same as ebay shipping, and pirateship I've heard from other sellers is usually cheaper (though again not by much). But ymmv as in most things.

It's funny because people cry about the ebay fee but then take 20%+ off when you buy in person or in cash. Flea markets I have tried but for the most part people in my area come with like 10 bucks to the flea market or you have a reseller who goes I'll give you $30 for your 4 short boxes. I have had luck on Facebook market place selling and in the comic groups but again people there just want to buy your comics to flip on ebay for money.
