In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at whether the search engine Ecosia is legit. Specifically, I figure out if Ecosia is real when they say Ecosia plants trees for every web search you make. Because there are no Snopes pieces on Ecosia, I figured it would be important to see if Ecosia is actually planting trees as they claim, as well as try to figure out whether switching from Google to Ecosia makes sense.

Actually a lot of the worlds forests are now producing net C02 rather than absorbing it since they're so degraded. Plus they're still being chopped down so planting trees is a good way to go. Exponentially better than doing nothing as well. And the trees are being planted in places that resemble deserts so this is actually a great thing for the people who live near these places.

I think you are saying that conservation is more important than restoration/regeneration (I don't really know the difference between these two). I agree. However, I believe that restoring an ecosystem that is already degraded so as to reduce its vulnerability to climate change is a worthy cause. Yes, prevention is definitely better than cure (excuse my crude analogy) but now that a lot of destruction has already happened, the work they are doing is commendable. kzbin.info/www/bejne/poHKkKl6gsqcgLs Check out this video. Their work is well researched and kinda awesome. In short, yes, I agree with you. But we have to give credit where credit is due.
@QronoZ713
@QronoZ713 3 жыл бұрын
@@sruthikajohn7232 Yes, for sure it's important with restoration! But I am sometimes worried that focus on restoration takes away from conservation. It's sort of a buy-out, a perfect green washing opportunity for companies and governments. It happens with the forest industry all the time, where they cut down primeval or old growth forests and replace with new saplings. They might not even be native species but in the end there might be more trees, which is inherently good right? (Of course it's not, and you know that but many people don't).

Hello, your report is very well thought out, but I want to add something: -Bing may be less "green" than Google, but ECOSIA has its own solar power plant, which "reimburses" their search footprint (only Ecosia's on Bing's servers). -If ECOSIA still exists, it is thanks to Bing, because, at the beginning, ECOSIA used Google's servers, which then fired them, for logical economic reasons, and Bing then agreed to "help" them.

I have Ecosia set as my default search engine, since all my casual searches are successful with it, but I also have a Google search bar whenever I want to use Google Maps, or can't find exactly what I'm looking for. Dom Squaaa they probably don’t care about climate change etc anyway. My school made this thing where you would put plastic in certain containers (although I don’t know where it went though) so they care at least a little. Once school starts in Sept. I’m gonna talk to my principal. If it doesn’t work because they might not be able to add it as an extension then I will just do it on mine. Edit: I bet I could talk to one of my favorite teachers and I bet she would jump on board, she very much cares about the climate. Then she could talk to the principal.

Ecosia is actually a really nice search engine. You lose nothing and you help fight the climate change. What's not to like? :) Honestly, if everyone was doing these "Small Token" things like using Ecosia, choosing a paper bag over plastic, etc. then it would all add up to a huge difference. There are over 500 million people in countries being part of the European Union. People in the EU are pretty rich and even in the poorest EU member states average person can count on decent living conditions. If you were to take annually 10 Euro from each one in tax it would amount to over 5 Billion Euro. Assuming that planting a single tree costs about 0,2 Euro a tree (what Ecosia Claims), then each year there could be 25 Billion Trees planted each year. That number is of course greatly inflated and just an estimate, but take 1/5 of it and you still have 5 Billion Trees a Year with just 10 Euro a Year (less than 0.10 Euro a month) from each EU Citizen. Small things can add up to something great! Also, planting trees is one of the most effective ways of preserving an ecosystem. Trees stabilize the ground, protect less robust crops from too much sun rays and dehydration, they absorb CO2 and other environmentally harmful substances, provide habitat for various creatures, etc. etc. Trees are the simplest answer to most Environment Problems. Not all, but most + they look beautiful and a stroll through the forest is one of the great joys of life IMHO.

You could write a script that makes automated searches. In the other hand that would lower their income per search and increase the number of searches they need for planting a single tree.

@@happygimp0 I did this, but then I realized that they only receive profits from ad clicks. You could theoretically write a script that clicks on these randomly, but I feel like there's probably some kind of captcha in place.

@Koniki It should work, they do not use a captcha because no one would bother with that and the ad would be useles. It is called click fraud but i think there could be negative long term consequences and i do not know if it is legal.

@@happygimp0 They could be using a hidden captcha that just makes sure the clicks are genuine, but you're probably right, I doubt they would actually care about this. It doesn't look like there's much legislation on click fraud and is more of an issue when it's committed by companies. Just throw the script onto a Tails VM and should be fine xD

@@koniki7050 Ad companies do use machine learning to tell if you're an actual human browsing their page or just a bot that clicks on things. I've heard from people who work in that industry that filtering out fake clickers is extremely easy nowadays.

People should download the Ecosia app. It's remarkably good.

This video, while made with good intentions, completely fails in its attempt to educate the viewer about how Ecosia generates revenue for planting trees. Searches alone DO NOT magically generate money for a search engine. In order for a search engine to be paid by an advertiser, users must be directed from searches to the advertisement itself (i.e., they must at least click on the link, or purchase an item from that company). If you use ecosia, but have never clicked on an ad, you have contributed exactly nothing to planting trees.

It's okay, this isn't really about information, but about making people feel good about themselves.
