The espalier is definitely beautiful and stunning!!! I know myself well enough that I do not have the patience for it - so thank you for teaching us about the care and time needed in order to be successful. FYI - I love the fact you keep everything real, and with a smile on your face.. the mosquitoes, lawn mower and the chicken laying its egg!!! Have a great day.

I have a large brick wall that I struggled with for years. It's so massive and bare but I never knew what to do with it. After watching you and Janie I did a Honeysuckle espalier in the fall. I'm zone 6 so obviously no growth over the winter but the plants stayed amazingly green over winter against the brick, I'm so excited for the growing season to start for me.

Star Jasmine is a great choice for an espalier…because it is slower growing. This means less regular maintenance. It does take longer to get it started (especially in the first three or so years, but the pay off Is in the long haul.

I love that espalier that you and Janey do. I'm wanting to do one myself but not sure which area of fencing I would do it. Remind me what paint or stain did you use on your fence? Because that's been on my list of "to do's" now that we have our deck and deck roofing redone. The work that never ends! But so thankful for Spring and all the gorgeous blooms! Thanks for showing all the ins and outs of what it takes with creating an espalier. I just love yours! XO from DFW, TX

Honeysuckle can be propagated easily by cutting. You could keep a few of of the pruned branches and simply stick them in the ground where you would place it at the base of your diamond espalier. It'd be easier, quicker, and less awkward than to re-train the vines to grow down the wire. It definitely is a stunner especially in front of the darkly shaded fence. I selected the star jasmine for my diamond espalier. However, my diamonds run 2-wide and 4-high. Pruning is rather difficult as the first leg of the diamond hits the perimeter. I was hoping I'd have secondary branching at the perfect height where the wire turns 90 degrees at the second leg of the diamond. Star jasmine is a bit more difficult to train or prune due to its growing pattern. The vines of the honey suckle are easier to wrap around the wire.

Hi Robbie. I just love this and can appreciate the effort it takes to maintain its beauty. I would love to do an espalier like this, however, the wooden fence in my backyard belongs to my neighbor (who is not neighborly). Also, if the fence begins to deteriorate, there goes the espalier. I will continue to admire yours and Janey's.

Hi Robbie, Your espalier is looking good I actually saw the video of you and Janey when you were putting it in, I love it and did it up and along my garage wall with Jasmin, mine is growing quickly and nearly covered the wires now, i absolutely love it, and don't mind at all the maintenance, I think with having Jasmin it hasn't grown that bushy,, smell amazing when in bloom, Robbie have you any advice on Gardenias, I really would love one, but have been told there fussy to grow, I'm in the UK and would plant in a pot I think , rather than the ground, could move it if needed for sun ,/ shade , Have you ever grown Gardenia, ? Hey Robbie! I have the perfect wall for this but it is in the shade. Any suggestions on what plant would work best?
@coleenholloway674710 ай бұрын
Hey Robbie, I'm also growing honeysuckle. It's the Lonicera Caprifoglio variety. We're in zone 9b central Italy and I'm growing it up the front of my house on a trellis (wanted to do wires like you, but was scared of punching so many holes for the hooks in the house because we have plaster). I have them growing in large container boxes, underplanted with various annuals or bulbs depending on the season. I don't know if these are the best conditions for them or if I'm cramming too many things in their space. They did AMAZING at first then end of summer started suffering leaf yellowing and disease. I cut them back end of Dec. and they're pushing fresh healthy growth already. I was wondering if you could talk about care and troubleshooting, tell us what variety you chose and why, etc.? Thank you! Happy planting
@coleenholloway674710 ай бұрын
Oh yeah--toward the beginning of winter they started leaf curling like tacos and turning dark violet on the foliage. I could never figure out if it was a normal reaction to cold cuz they were semi-deciduous or it was a disease. Help pretty plzzzz!

If you put those cuttings in wet sand and keep it moist they will root for you.
