I would love a politics of clothes series, or what a garment says about you series, for iconic looks such as a suit or wearing a biker jacket.

I've seen someone argue about how they "personally dislike" when fashion content gets political and would rather just have discussions centred around trends which like??? Where do you think trends come from???
@TheStitchess4 жыл бұрын
Same. It’s actually kinda sad when people have this attitude because it eliminates so much fashion history and so many different ways we interact with clothing as a concept
@CoraMaria4 жыл бұрын
@@TheStitchess Right? Especially when the most revolutionary fashion often comes from fringe communities and minorities that often go uncredited.

I love when fashion turns into a more complex topic like politics! I realised clothes can be political, but I never took the time to analyze it deeply.

I’m making fabric masks while watching! By using fabric masks, we can look cute and creative, while also being mindful of others and our environment. By wearing these masks, we prevent the spread of the virus, and we eliminate waste because they are washable. The current situation sucks, but why not bring smiles to others with cute and playful masks?

THANK👏YOU👏!!!!!!!! I host a jfashion podcast and we've been criticized in the past for being political and intersectional. my cohost and I couldnt believe that someone would really be against us supporting and uplifting underprivileged voices and using our radical visibility for change
@TheStitchess4 жыл бұрын
Which is low key hilarious because most jfashions are very political in nature
@CoraMaria4 жыл бұрын
I'VE SEEN YOU BE CRITICISED FOR THAT BY ONE OF MY EX FRIENDS WHO WEARS LOLITA!!! The irony was that we even studied the political history of lolita fashion in my fashion communication degree. I love your podcast because it IS political and if you tried to be as apolitical as you could then you wouldn't have anything interesting to talk about.
@PunkHime894 жыл бұрын
May i please know the name of your podcast? I’ve been so mainstream for years and these last few months of isolation has really made me acknowledge how much I deteste my sense of fashion and ignorance right now. I want to go back to actually caring about what I buy and how I dress.

I think my clothes say: Average American female. It's not what I want them to say but it's what I have. I mainly have long sleeve tees and jeans. not fashion forward or too out of date. This actually really helpful for figuring out what I want to change by thinking about what I want my style to say

It's interesting how much information (intentional or not) comes through even on such a basic outfit like your example. Actually, this reminds me of something I read recently on Medium about this guy who always got the same popular style of haircut that white alt-right men gravitate towards, so his barber and other men in the barbershop would see it as an ok to talk about gross things in his company. Even though he didn't agree with them, they saw him as one of them just based on his haircut!

The alt-right and neo-nazi movements are notorious for stuff like that :/

This type of thing actually frustrates me. I was going to dye a pair of laces red for a cosplay until I found out red laces+combat boots are heavily associated with neo-nazis or the sort. Of course I changed my plan (to lavender) but the idea that I could be accidentally ID-ing myself as one of them for something so simple as laces kinda... freaks me out :/

Thank you for this video! I’m an African-2nd gen American so my fashion’s gonna be looked upon as political by default. So long as I’m exuding positivity to peeps I meet and expressing myself honestly, I just roll with it. I just focus on being a good person at the end of the day.

Bravo Stichess! This was a nice jewel of info to watch from beginning to end and my clothes according to others says I have low self esteem honestly...I'm just lazy and building up the style i really want

I get this too! My style is honestly really bold and out there, but I don't have all the clothes that I want yet. When I dress in a way that really feels like me, people praise for "coming out of my shell" and dressing up and such. I used to be confused, because I never really saw the difference.

For most of my trips outside I've been wearing very simple basics. Sturdy men's shoes from the thrift store (they look very unisex though), jeans that were given to me by an aunt who was no longer wearing them, a coat given to me by my mother's friend (mom's friend self medicates through shopping, has a lot of leftover stuff), a second hand black t-shirt with a store bought long sleeve shirt over it. Store bought leggings under my jeans for extra warmth. When I have to wonder what message other people are getting from my outfit it's probably that I don't care about fashion or looking good, and that I value practicality over aesthetics. The truth is that if there's no dress code or special occasion I just don't care much about what I look like. Practical and clean are my priorities then.

the one thing i think of when i think of the words "fashion" and "politics" together is punk, possibly because im punk/generally alt myself or because punk is widely known as "the style that belives in anarchy"

I mostly wear neutral (or at least dull) colored plain t-shirts, jeans with at least one hole or threadbare spot, and sneakers. "I don't care what I look like and would rather not be noticed." Although the statement changes a little when I add one of my hand knitted or crocheted items.

Fashion CAN be political, it's not inherently political, nor is someone inherently making political statements by wearing certain types of fashion (the exception being like... actual worded statements or symbols). I hate that I can't just wear something I like the aesthetic look of without being branded as X Y or Z because "well it's political!". I think people forget that fashion is different for everyone and can mean different things to different people. Sometimes it's political expression, sometimes it's personal expression, other times it's just "this is pretty" / "this is cool" / "this is comfortable". Like there's discourse in some alt communities calling for violence against people who wear red shoelaces because it's a N@zi symbol or something, despite the fact that red is one of the most common colors used in alt communities. I think it's also important to acknowledge that things have changed a lot since some of these fashions were created. What might have been a symbol of politics might have become just an aesthetic for someone who likes the looks of it. And can we really police who can and can't wear something, simply because one person finds it political / to have a meaning while another doesn't? TL;DR: fashion isn't always political, wear what you want and don't police what others wear; also don't assume things exclusively based on what someone is wearing because that's weird, stereotyping, and oftentimes prejudicial. Also, I don't hate this video or anything, it's well made. Just wanted to add my two cents!

Personally I'm a (nb) high school student, and while I have strong interests in Victorian and Edwardian fashions , I mostly dress in sweatpants and large geeky t-shirts. I also have waist length hair and a tendency to brush it at night rather than in the morning, so I usually look a mess. I think the hair says I don't care at all, which is often true, the shirts say, these are my interests, which is true, and the pants say, I like comfortable clothing. But that's only the way I dress on a normal, "I'm tired and I'm not thinking about clothing" day. I also have several other styles I dress in sometimes. Like, some days, I just go for the brightest things in my closet. I don't own too many, but I dive straight for clashing colors and patterns. A bright turquoise dress, and plum leggings, and slightly off blue and purple striped socks, for example. Actually, in general, I wear lots of fun socks. I have no idea what that says about me, but I think the crazy colors signify that I dress for myself only, because on those days I actually enjoy clashing and my friends teasing wincing about it. It brings me joy. Then there's my final main style, which is a nice vest, button down, and very soft jeans. Overall that looks very professorial on me, and I love that. It makes me feel competent in a way my normal clothing doesn't, but it also requires an energy that I don't always have. I hope that radiates exactly what I feel when I wear it, that I am efficient and qualified to do whatever I'm doing. I think it also has an element of I'll never sacrifice comfort though, because I'm skin sensitive so I'm incredibly picky on the feel of fabrics.

Currently wearing baggy white jeans, with a baggy black sweater with a yellow collar peaking out. Wearing fake docs with colored laces. Idk what that says about me. It probably just means I’m a little confused, cus I am.

My current outfit sorta confirms and denies my personality. I’m planning to be creative today, so I’m wearing a shirt and sweatpants because 1.) they are comfy and 2.) they are allowed to get dirty. My sweatpants are full of resin stains that can’t be washed out

"If everyone is super, then nobody's super" syndrome, the incredibles. JUST CUZ I DRESS LIKE A PIRATE AND MAKE 90% OF MY CLOTHES, DOESN'T MEAN I AM TRYING TO TELL PEOPLE STUFF! I'm sorry, I just dress however is comfortable for me. I often go to the store in my pyjamas and go to concerts in my pirate gear cuz it's fun. I'm a musician so I can dress however and in my off time I'm just laying around in my pyjamas. I'm a complete weeb and a bit of a neet. I make money by dressing up and playing my violin, I'm not trying to use clothes to tell people about myself, that's what words are for! 😂 (Pls don't think I hate you, I dont, just read it while laughing and not being too serious. That's the energy I'm trying to give off while encouraging fun discussion and debate. Love u rly🙃)

Knock off converse? They’re like $40. I know everyone is working with different budgets but that seems like a really cheap thing to buy a knock off of.
