This is soooo expensive. It's actually very sad because some people can't afford it and they are not given the opportunity to even star out. It is heartbreaking for a sport to be so inaccessible.
@LlamaLlamaMamaJamaac6 ай бұрын
Yeah… my oldest daughter is a Nordic skier and remember a huge cost upfront; classic skis, skate skis, and boots were over $1000 - I don’t even remember the total for the bifurcated mittens, ski poles, cold-weather protection, moisture-wicking layer, bag for her skis/poles………. And then it was another several hundred when she wanted roller skis and a helmet for summer training. After all that though we didn’t have to purchase anything unless it wore out, and then entry fee for the 55km marathon that she participated in outside her high school/college team. Even a big one-time cost like that would be inaccessible to a lot of people… my family is comfortably middle-class and could afford it, but we did have to tighten up. Definitely one of those instances where life is unfair 😢

about my comment- just want to mention that this doesn’t go for every country and region within a country. prices REALLY depend on the coach itself, the rink, the city and country. prices sadly differ a lot and while in my case it’s cheaper than shown in the video while being in germany, for example some others may pay the same amount and also live somewhere else in Germany. don’t get me wrong please, didn’t mean to generalize that for whole Germany or EU or so, just MY experience 🥹🙏🏻✨ this is such an interesting video and i’m kind of shocked how expensive it seems to be in the US 😳 maybe i’m just lucky with the rinks near me and that i found a really good teacher- she charges 25€ per one hour lesson, we sometimes also go over that time limit as well 🤧 and we don’t really have those freestyle sessions, but i usually go early in the morning when everyone else is working/in school, it’s a public session but usually there are only three or four people at the rink and it costs me 6,50€ for basically the whole day (the rink is only almost empty for the first four hours of the day tho) 😭 the good thing when you have classes and sometimes work only in the afternoon xD it’s reaaaally interesting to see how much all those prices can differ, from lessons, to skates and ice time!! and i wrote way too much, sorry 😭😂 but this is really the perfect video for beginners to know what they have to expect!! also, you’re always giving off such calm vibes, i really love your videos 🥹🙏🏻💕

Public skating in Sweden is mostly free. It changes from one place to another but generally sport is seen as something for everyone and there are lots of incentives for accessibility. Freeskating is part of our club's membership & there are group lessons included. I guess it's around 8 usd per hour or so. I am so grateful for what we have but we also always need to push to have more access to this wonderful sport and make it affordable for people who have less means.

Public skating is different from Freestyle ice. Freestyle ice is for those who are practicing skills for figure skating, while public skating is cheap but open to everyone, no matter what skill they have.

it’s a lot harder to keep it free in warmer climates. In California there’s a $20 fee at my local rink, but that’s probably because we are in a hot dry climate, so maintaining rinks costs more all year long even in winter. However, my family in the north east learned to skate on their frozen lakes and have $10 public sessions at rinks

I just bought my first pair of skates. I was going to ask for thr cheapest thing there but i told the technician during the fitting that I was going to start group lessons next month and start taking private lessons twice a month so he recommended the Jackson Elle so I could keep the skates for a longer period of time. I would personally not recommend second hand skates. Before I bought my skates i was looking into it but based on all the videos I saw, there are really a lot of unknowns with second hand skates that could result in an injury or making it so uncomfortable you get desuaded from skating. Like even if its just to skate during the holidays, buy a cheap new ones you can keep around.

That's so expensive, I am lucky it's way cheaper where I live (France). Let's see. 300€ skates & 100€ accessories (spend on the last 3 years of skating). 60€ a year for club fee. Beween 150€ and 200€ for a year of group lessons (1h a week), 20€ for 1h of private lesson (though we don't have the ring for ourselves). About 3€ for access to ice on public sessions (could be for 2 to 5h depending on the opening hours but basically you just pay to enter, you don't pay the by the hour). We don't have separate free skating and public sessions though. So everyone is packed at the same time. We do our private lessons on the 12:00 to 14:00 session because the shorter ones and mid-day ones are usually less crowded. Though, I don't do competitions and no exam yet but still it feels much more affordable. My first skates cost me like 50€ (ok maybe they cost like 80 to 100€ today, things have gotten more expensive with the years) and they were ok for starters, I could even pass them on a friend who started recently and they got teacher approved. 10 years of age and still going.

honestly, if you don`t compete in higher competitions theres no need to buy shoes like the Edea Ice fly. When you start doing double jumps or triple, then you need better shoes. But at the level of a beginner, with no higher spins or jumps, its totally enough to go with Shoes, that fit in that level! Our Girls ( I am a figure skating coach) get there Ice Flys when they are safely landing the doubles.
@sofiafigureskates9 ай бұрын
more goes into consideration when buying skates than just skill level. people said the same thing when i got my edea chorus boots, but my chorus boots started breaking down within 10 months. I’m a strong skater and i skate almost every single day / 10+ hours a week. i also work at a rink and use my skates for work. I needed a boot that was going to last me longer. When my chorus boots broke down, my options were to get a chorus boot again, or go up to ice fly. This boot was recommended to me by multiple coaches and my skate technician. They recommend ice fly because if i get chorus again, it’ll only last me another 9-10 months before I have to upgrade again. I don’t have the money to be replacing my skates every 9-10 months and needed something to last longer and be more supportive ! I’ve been wearing them for months already and have had no trouble with knee/ankle bend 🤷♀️(you also technically can’t really overboot in edea) additionally, more goes into consideration when buying skates than skill level alone. hope this helps!

$140 for 7 week group lesson. Includes all public ice free during time. $10 hour for freestyle ice. $6 blade sharpening if not same day. Same day $20. $100 per boot for my 4 year old. So $300 for 1 year worth of skates. $30 to $60 per 30 minute private. Recommend private and group combo for twice a week lessons.

It really is sad. I grew up competing for many years and now I’m in my 30’s wanting to skate some but the accessibility of this sport is just insane. The barrier to entry is too high and impossible for the average person. My skates are about finished and I don’t have any money for boots or blades. Between the cost of boots and blades, public ice now being $15, poor ice coverage on Peacock, etc. and the gate keeping, this sport will collapse, its just a matter of time. In this economy, I’m amazed anyone can continue unless its every now and then recreationally
@LillyJones-je8yg Жыл бұрын
to quote Roman Sadovsky "Your only limitations are you.. and your wallet" haha But in all seriousness, do not let the cost of skating discourage you, while investing more money into it will yield better results and faster progression, anyone can be a figure skater regardless of budget. While not ideal, I've known people develop strong skating skills on rental skates, or you can buy good beginner skates for $100-$200 as well. And coaching can be expensive but there are lots of KZbin tutorials to help you get started and you can also connect with more advanced skaters at the rink and they will often be happy to give you tips. Many public recreation centres have ice rinks where you can buy an unlimited pass or a punch card to lower the cost as well.

In UAE the options for rinks is a bit more limited but they have memberships like you can pay like 1500 AED for a 3 month membership and pay 500 AED for a 1 month membership i always pay the 3 month membership and the beginner lessons you pay for 8 lessons for 500 AED and for my skates their beginner Jackson skates and they costed like 500 - 1000 AED (yes expensive) i've been using them for like a year or 2 and they're in amazing condition and i personally dont recommened you get new skates EVERY SINGLE YEAR i advise to get new skates when u feel like they stop boot part is very weak and the tongue of the boot is beinding easily. sometimes its not the boot and its the laces so sometimes you need your laces replaced. For me we dont have figure skating tests. Once the coach feels like you have gotten better they start teaching you more things like more spins and jumps. The off-skates classes tho are a seperate fee i'm not sure of the price tbh but its around 50 - 100 AED. Figure Skating is a expensive sport. I as a person would recommended that you buy skates every 2-3 years or whenever you feel like you've out grown it. you coach recommended it. or that its breaking down. For skating clothes just wear whatever is comfortable adn you feel confident in skating in. blade guards and soft guards and towels are essentials i didnt have them at all because i never thought they were important and a while later my baldes got rusted and i had to do a huge deep cleaning and take it to be sharpened to get the rust off then i got the towel soft guards and hard guards and my blades are in really good condition thank god. I personally DO NOT recommened getting new skates every time it gets a bit scratched or you think every year you should get a new one. just get one when its broken down or its recommended by your coach. In my competion i spent 420 AED on my tailorised dress and 300 AED for 1 private lesson for my program (tbh i dont feel like private lessons are that necessary but it differs forms skater to skater and i work in a group and can progress really well but i dont stick with them all the time) then i spent like 1000 - 2000 AED for the competition then i had to go to a different rink to perform so i payed like 150 AED to pay for the rink and their was a rehersal before the competion by a week and i paid also 150 AED for that and yah. the gloves r quiet cheap like u can find them in like Brand For Less for like 10 - 20 AED the soakers were around 20 - 50 AED and and blade guards are 100 - 200 - 50 AED depends where you buy them from. I got my skates, blade guards and soakers from amazing and my gloves, skating skirt and skating hijab/scarf from Shein then my pants and shirt from United Ajman. Which the stuff from shein and United were cheap tbh so if u add all those up its quiet expensive but like she said second hand dresses for competiontions are cheap and usually in good condition, my sister makes dresses (training/practing to) so im planning on her making them for me and she crochet so for the ankle warmers i think those can be crochet. :))

I live in Canada so I guess the prices are different, nonetheless my figure skates only cost about $300 or so. When I was starting out, I had a pair of skates that probably costed around $100, so if you do want to try but have a smaller budget, you can always try buying cheaper ones to begin with, then upgrade to more professional ones if you like the sport. if you don't have the biggest budget, it's always okay to try out a cheaper brand of skates. The brand I'm using right now costs about $300 but still works perfectly fine for all the skills and spins I do on a regular practice day. EDEA skates can be quite expensive, costing maybe around $500-900 CAD depending on the kind, so I definitely do think if you don't have the biggest budget you can go with a brand that's maybe less expensive

I would disagree with your statement regarding using used skates. I just purchased the Jackson Freestyle ($350), as an adult skater working on waltz jump, salchow, and one foot spins. The fitter said that I could have even gone a little cheaper, but I was confortable spending that money. He says he has skater using these skates until they jump doubles. So, no reed to buy such expensive skates, unless you already have your axel. Also, after spending about $250-300 in group lesson, I would not recommended them. At the 2 different rinks I tried, group lessons are more like a supervised practice, with no feedback. I learned more in 2 private lessons ($30 a 30 minute lesson), than in 6 months of group lesson. So definitively not worth it! I’d rather keep the money for the lesson, and buy just the right skates for your level. No reason to go to advanced skates too soon :)
@gymnasticzlife Жыл бұрын
I def disagree with ur comment on the jackson freestyles ( assuming im looking at the right boot, its a 40 stiffness rating in Jackson). Fitters say these sort of things but as someone who is working on the same things as you and as someone who works hard on getting a strong and deep knee bend, a boot at this level stiffness would fall apart in less than a year, maybe months. On top of that, the rating for boots is often meant for children, not full grown adults who are 100+ pounds. There is no way in hell I would attempt doubles in this boot unless they were brand new out of the box with little wear on them and I was excellent at jumping. For reference, Im in Risports RF3's, the second most stiff boot of the Rf line. I'm 5'7" and 135lbs. And yea, the group lessons arent worth it unless you are a BEGINNER, beginner and not sure if you want to continue in the sport.

It's amazing just how much playing or competing in almost any sport can cost. I'm a golfer and by no means not a professional. but just to get a good quality set of clubs you first need to be fitted with the correct length of shafts for each club and that fitting isn't cheap and the clubs can easily cost well into the $3,500.00 range. we don't even want to talk about what lessons can cost and I'm sure that's the same with figure skating as well. Before you became a skater you were a dancer which is clearly seen in your skating. Hard to believe you didn't start skating until you were 15. I would have thought you started soon after you started walking. Do you mind me asking what inspired you to start skating when you did? I doubt that you just woke up one morning and said you wanted to be a figure skater.

I have the ice fly boot and some other blades and it = 1,600 my parents are mad
@yemachi Жыл бұрын
you payed THAT MUCH for an edea chorus boot?? in the EU its 300Euro O____O The blade price is also about 250, but 500 for a chorus-- oml- I wonder why none ''advanced figure'' skaters buy such a high lvl boot (meant for triples and quads) but they're not even doing doubles yet or arent learnign doubles yet- If you can spoil yourself ig go for it girl😭 I'm glad you didnt buy an advanced blade cuz the blade does fit your skating lvl, but the blade doesnt fit the lvl of the boot.

just curious, why did you buy a new set of blades if you were going to use the same model? Did the original blades get worn out?
@sofiafigureskates Жыл бұрын
i had to get a smaller size boot which meant i needed a smaller blade !

I am planning on starting figure skating but I have anxiety and I know I will have bad blocks should I still try and start
@user-jy9rq8nj7q8 ай бұрын
yes maybe it can be an opportunity for you to work on lessening it, you might surprise yourself don't limit yourself and your capabilities to the anxiety you have, it shouldn't control your life. there are many people who dont have access to the hobby too so use your opportunities.

OK,ur just bragging,ur not even doing axel.Your the same level as me and I am only using chorus and coronation ace blades and I'm doing lutz.Your using ice fly which is olympic level💀 Not to hate but....
@sofiafigureskates3 ай бұрын
personally, my chorus boots broke down in 10 months while I was only doing single jumps in them. my coaches and skate tech recommended ice flys because they would last longer and support me better. and they were right, because I’ve been in them for almost a year now and they’re working great! I’m always going to listen to my coaches and skate tech who know what I need based on my weight, height, skill level, and how much I skate. every skater has different needs!
