Air mattresses naturally go soft when first inflated until they "stretch" all the way. Until they have stretched, you can't fill them, so they feel like they are going flat.
@DJRicoche2 жыл бұрын
@corey Babcock Why doesn't it make sense? If you read the instructions (crazy I know) of any air mattress, it will tell you the first few times it will go soft with use, but this does not mean it has a hole. Air mattresses are made of a semi stretchable material, so the first few times they are filled, they will stretch - which makes them bigger - and requires more air to fill them after they have stretched and every time after.

Water takes the path of least resistance. With the intact pipe there's no path to take. If you had a weak joint or somewhere it'd leak, but other than that the thick walls of the pipe can hold a lot of pressure so the water doesn't go anywhere until the pressure builds up high enough to stop new water coming in. (Because water doesn't really compress) That being said, introducing a weak point, I.E.: a hole, reduces the amount of pressure it can take. Anything you repair that hole with has to be able to withstand the maximum pressure of your water source. So if your house has normal water pressure of 45-80 psi (roughly 310-550 kPa) then any repair would have to be able with withstand that, and I don't think the adhesive on flex tape, alien shield, duct tape, flashing tape, or any other kind of tape alone is going to be enough to withstand those pressures. Usually they use pipe clamps as a temporary measure until a permanent fix (that is, replacing the pipe), can be accomplished. So even in this "best case scenario" you might buy an extra second or two before catastrophic failure.
@jonathanpuccetti92582 жыл бұрын
@@DisIntegratedLife I get what you are saying, but if I can kink a hose with just my hand, then I think a roll of duct tape would easily get the job done. If it's just one piece of tape I would bet you are right, but ten layers? twenty? I bet would hold easy.

Just a thought on the water pressure one: it would be interesting to see if the tape would hold were you to apply the tape dry and then turn on the water. It may just be that the tape needs to set to hold water pressure, and this would simulate turning off the water main before putting the tape on a damaged pipe.

Not just that, the side of the tape the water was pouring of out had very little surface area to adhere to. More even surface area should make a better bond.
@DisIntegratedLife2 жыл бұрын
Typical household pressure is 45-80 psi (310-550 kPa), the tape's adhesive would need to contain that much pressure at a minimum in order to stop the leak. I'm not convinced that even wrapping it around several times would necessarily be enough. Not enough certainly to last any appreciable amount of time. You'd need to turn off the water and go down to the hardware store and buy a pipe clamp to put a true temporary fix on it. Ultimately any hole in your pipes weakens the overall strength of the pipe and can cause a much larger blow-out down the line if not replaced. I'm not sure why flex tape would tout itself as that sort of repair in the first place, as no repair made with flex tape is going to be lasting. And I would think that demonstrating it "fixing" a leaking pipe in their infomercials would open them up to liability if someone were to sue for damages caused by trying to use it in such a manner.
@razgrizbird45622 жыл бұрын
@@DisIntegratedLife I agree entirely with your statement. Looking further at this, it is possible that it would work for a low pressure household application though, say for a leaking sink drain or gravity return, just not for the supply line.

$7 for one roll of Alien Shield or $15 for one roll of Flex Tape? Alien Shield is slightly better because it doesn't flex like Flex Tape, but has a worse tape glue on it. My guess would be the glue is much cheaper to make, which is why Alien Shield is cheaper.

the pressure doesnt change, the velocity does. if you increase the hole size then the pressure will lower until the water can freely flow, but when you seal the hole the pressure will always be the same. having a smaller hole would be easier to seal because the static pressure will be the same but the hole surface area will be smaller, resulting in a smaller total force from the water. instead you could have had the hole of a set size with a valve in the end cap of the PVC, and the slowly closed the valve which would increase the pressure gradually until failure. you could also try to apply the tape and then turn the water on with this method.

After about 3 nights of sleeping on an air mattress, the vinyl should be fully stretched.

If it were an actual pipe, the water would not be trapped like in your test. So even in your home it wouldn’t become that pressurized. To make the test more accurate you should have another hose coming off the opposite end of the inlet. That way it would show how the pressure would really work. If pipes in homes worked how you are showing, they would constantly explode! I really like the thought of the test though, it really shows how much you’ve grown since you started doing product reviews!
@TylerTube2 жыл бұрын
inlet pipes into your home are pressurized. the water is "trapped" until you turn on a faucet, flush a toilet etc. think of an outdoor water faucet, the water comes out when you turn the faucet because it is under constant pressure, if you were to cut the pipe, water would come out like it did in my demonstration

Bad test on the pressurized hole. A normal pipe isn't blocked off on both ends so when a whole happens and is covered the water chooses the path of least resistance i.e. continue to flow through the pipe. What you created only has one escape for the water so the water will flow through no matter what is in its way. If something sufficiently strong enough blocks the hole your contraption will blow up. Nothing like a real pipe

I think the main problem here is the method of application, a small strip of tape with little surface area to grip obviously isn't gonna hold all that well with a pressurized pipe. Wrapping the pipe in multiple layers however works perfectly, as not only does it have more surface area to grip but it is then also able to grip onto itself as you wrap it around. You've only seemed to show that you shouldn't use an amount lesser than what is necessary, rather than how well it works when properly applied

Isnt the alien tape more like a nano tape type thing, that doesn't really work with adhesive? And that's why it seems less sticky?
