"The gods are on the move" indeed! Something amazing is happening. A few years ago when I looked into Heathenry the AFA was the loudest voice in the room and folkism was the rule rather than an exception. Then about a year ago, after falling out hard with a gnostic church over failing to confront racism in their history in a meaningful way and a brief spell as an antitheist tankie, more and more Heathens who rejected folkism crossed my path and I found for once I had a community online to step into. Since then the gods have made themselves known to me little by little. I know now that the way of the All Father is the way of seekers, wanderers, and the worldly-wise. Folkism stunts that with foolish notions of a sacred science.

As someone from Scandinavia I would say that you are partially wrong that the historical link to the pre-christian traditions were broken. Yes there were none that practiced the religious rituals openly and publicly. However very much of the world-view and the private rituals lived - some still lives on. The gods often took on another shapes and and names: "Freya" became "Mary","Frey" became "St Erik", "Odin" became "the Hard one" (known as the devil) - but the practices often continued. Mostly they were still seen as the same old gods just under yet a different name - "noa names" and "Kennings" were, and still are, heavily used so what was one more name. Even though people called the selves christian and went to church many never stopped believing that the old gods still existed, they were just not in charge any more. This can be shown by protocols from church hearings as late as in the 1800s. There are reports of pockets with heathens and heathens practitioners in Sweden for example up until the 1800s. People continued to make offerings to the Tomte (homestead warden spirit/being that was the spirit after the first settler on the land) and many still do it as part of Christmas traditions. How you interact with the land-spirits have lived on. Divination practices has lived on. Offerings to Odin, Thor, Frey and Freya have lived on - sometimes under different names but sometimes the names were still used. The use of magical charms. The use of magic while brew ale. The beliefs of unlocking ones fate. The drinking rituals and toasting rituals during celebrations. Folk medicine and the "cunning folk". Hunting rituals. Fishing rituals. Weddings. Naming. Funeral feasts. Holiday traditions. Oaths. Feuds. And so on and so on and so on. Some were kept as the were while others only changed some few key elements to pass as acceptable christian. Just because the allegiance to the top layer of the "spiritual" world of which one pledged one self and identified as a follower of changed did not mean the whole package of the world view, values, traditions, beliefs, rituals and so on changed. Christianity were just like a varnish on top of pre-christian traditions and if one just scratches the surface it is still there. Norse heathery, or rather more precise; "fornsidir" (ancient customs) are NOT dead traditions!! The religious practices regarding the gods and goddesses was mostly lost, that is true, but the rest of the package were not. This is very important to keep in mind! To my mind you can not have one without the other. Many Scandinavians also have the guard up when for example Americans (and others) exploit the history and cultural heritage, and often completely miss the mark, however most tend despite that to be inclusive. I agree that "Folkism" is utterly rubbish!

I understand what you mean. I am not Scandinavian or Black yet deities from both pantheons have approached me. It felt easier to approach "white" deities but although I feel honoured, I don't know why Xangó said his name every time I touched my divination bone kit (?) not as a warning, it felt "acknowledging"..other Orishas also told me their names and greeted me. I have read about them, their stories and the fundamentals of all religions with Orishas are appealing and make sense in many ways, though, honestly, I am a solitary practitioner for a reason, I don't like groups, I do things my way. I agree that this might look lazy, noncommittal or even disrespectful to some, but it's how I approach my spirituality and deities who approach me know how things are and how I am.😂 The Orishas are to be approached through a group and following lots of rules, and undergoing several initiations, I fully understand and respect this but it's not possible in my life. Any advice? Any idea why the Orishas would contact someone with no African ascent?

Another fine contribution to tonight's anti-folkist KZbin series. Thanks for the distinction you made between religions with a closed oral tradition versus those which are, as it were, open-access and based on publicly available documents. It helped resolve a dilemma I commented about under Aliakai's video. A closed Heathen religion would be impossible, as you say, since there is no secret knowledge imparted only to insiders, thus no basis for exclusion. In your contribution to Aliakai's video, you mentioned an encounter with a group called the Sun-Eaters, who are related to the Wolves of Vinland. Any chance of seeing it expanded into a video or article?

Another prospective. My partner is indigenous Australian. People outside her tribe are not allowed to practice their rituals. These rituals are possibly some of the oldest rituals in the world. So is that racism?. She not aloud to practice anything from our culture. Would like to hear your thoughts.
@joannajett25244 жыл бұрын
Do you know why they don't share their rituals with outsiders? If I understand correctly, each tribe would have specific rituals and they keep these rituals to themselves? Also, do they accept other people to join the tribe in some cases? I mean permanently join, not for a ritual, obviously.
@shanerobinson40954 жыл бұрын
@@joannajett2524 good question. Do be honest I don’t know why they don’t share. But in my own opinion. It’s because they have evolved so long with no contact. Each tribe has definitely got there own rituals. And there are very small exceptions to including outsiders who are living among them permanently. But very rare. The ceremony’s can go for months. The energy in the community change quite dramatically.
@joannajett25244 жыл бұрын
@@shanerobinson4095 Thanks for your response. It's fascinating. And I don't think it's racism, especially if they don't include other Aboriginals from other tribes. To me it sounds more like big families, each having their own history and traditions. Like Wolf said, it doesn't work that way for Heathenry because what information we have about the traditions is in writing and available for everyone. And it's not been practiced for many generations, unlike indigenous Australian tribes' rituals.

I call myself folkish, to me it means I was interested in the religion because of my ancestry, it is important to me but its OK if non Germanic/Scandinavian people follow the same gods/goddesses. It also means I try to be traditional, but its OK for people with non traditional views like LGBTQ to practice the religion. I think there are more reasons to follow the religion than just ancestry and traditional can mean many different things, like growing your own food and being more self reliant, celebrating holy days, building a community, reenacting, etc. Also Oaths are more impotant than blood, so someone making an oath to the gods is more meaningful than ancestry in my opinion. Love for your own ethnic or racial heritage doesn't necessarily mean hatred for others, I think it is valid to view it as an ethnic faith for yourself personally, but not everyone has to see it that way, and no one can stop you from being Heathen/Pagan/Asatru for other reasons. My Norwegian/Swedish/German heritage is a valid reason to me, but definitely not the only reason.

I dislike folkist ideas but they are not without precedent in spiritual groups. Fear of exploitation isn't the only motive put forth, Hebrew tradition is rather exclusive by definition. When that is the case considering most of our traditions are often syncretic in a way or another I could see an argument to be made here about importing the importance of parental lines from Hebrew tradition to fill a perceived need of a group of Pagans, and I couldn't fault them logically because they have every right to go out of the reconstructionist process and decide which outside elements to incorporate into their faith. With that being said I am pretty sure folkist groups aren't marrying their Heathen faith with a Jewish view of the relationship between a God and his people, considering how they are often openly hostile towards Jewish people due to their ties with neo-nazi movements. Regardless, in a very saddening way it's quite ironic that neo-nazi Folkists are moving their own flavor of Heathenry closer to a key aspect of Hebraism. With that being said though, if they truly believe that their bloodline gives them a priviledged position in the eyes of their Gods, I can't understand what exactly prompts them into excluding people who don't share their bloodline from practicing their faith, wouldn't it be entirely their problem? Aren't the Gods choosing who to aid regardless? If, as absurd as it sounds, Thor only helps white people for some reason that eludes me, I doubt he is gonna help a black man because he made an offering to him and then turn around and blame the white people who saw it happen for not preventing him from making the offering. The whole idea of preventing a subset of people from spiritual practice looks like a fool's errand to me. Sickening as it sounds, I would import a revised version of the Indian caste system into the Heathen tradition if I held their ideologies, which I don't. In a sense their lack of imagination is reassuring, there are much more toxic ways to go about incorporating discrimination into spiritual practice than exclusion from it. Imagine if they allowed non-whites into the faith as lesser Folkists and required them to perform bloodletting during ritual for example. Folkism is bad, but it could be far far worse. I'm not really sure what I'm getting at with this, I'm just sharing my fears of what it could devolve into. Probably because I am not sure that we should have distanced ourself as far as we have from them, certain movements are better kept at arm's length where they can be kept under scrutiny and influenced. The complete severing of ties that is happening between heathens and folkists leaves the folkist groups isolated amongst radicals and that problem I'm afraid is only gonna get worse as they are left more and more to their own devices. I hope my fears will not come to pass.

Yeah I think you are completely missing the point of Folkism. I agree that some Folkist’s can be racist and prejudice towards people of other ethnicities, so too are those ethnicities towards any other ethnicities not of their own, but that does not make it acceptable much less Heathen, at all. With this all being said, the fact you said there is no “bloodline” constraints is in fact wrong. The “ancestor veneration” part of Heathenry IS THE BLOODLINE CONSTRAINT. Does that mean Odin won’t reach out and call upon a Black man or woman or child in Harlem? Of course not! Odin does what he damn well please just as the other gods do. But acting like Heathenry doesn’t have a culturally tied Ethnos connected to it is just wrong! Even you said yourself that people of color tend not to be very attracted by Paganism or Heathenism. That is for purposeful reason! Not because people of African American heritage just “aren’t allowed.” No, that’s completely stupid and dogmatic, which is exactly what Heathenism IS NOT. It’s because people of African American heritage have a calling towards their own culturally tied Ethnos or “ἔθνος.” Greek word meaning “nation.” Attacking people for being prejudice as a Heathen is acceptable and is within our very duties as Heathens to stand against, attacking Folkism as a whole I see as new age biased-reconstructionism on your part, Oceans part and Akai. (I think that is how you spell her name, I apologize if I got it wrong.)

My thing is this They wana bring up ancestors and giving yes a lot was forced, but MOST IF NOT ALL Viking / Norse Heathen ancestors ….. didn’t even stick to it. All of em converted to Christianity. The ancestors they talk about, you follow that bloodline and see where it leads I bet 98% of it leads to Christ. In one form or another. Leaving it to ancestors only is a guarantee way to have an extinct religion, is that how you want a extinct religion? That’s how you get extinct languages. Most dead languages are only practiced , used or spoken by people who find interest and study and follow or practice that knowledge. It’s just insane. Look at all “Nordic” countries you find one similar theme and that’s the flags all use the symbol of the cross to represent Christs succession in conquering most of not all Europe . Yes there are some little spots here n there but the MAJORITY. Who have the “right” …supposedly …. Dropped it, left it, ignored it or was forced to forget it but here we are, 2024 who are those defendants, My point exactly. Last point to make, anyone who brings up the family tree bullshit, tell them it shouldn’t stop at branches they like to decorate, look at all of them, go back far enough we’re ALL RELATED… we are all children from HUMANS. Humanity, is our only race.

7:15 (excuse my bad English) Hi. When you said there that heathens were wiped out, it is true of Scandinavia but not really (not as much at least) of Iceland because in Iceland people could practice anything they wanted on private land, and most land were private in some way, so a lot of people continue practicing heathenry to this day. So they never lost their heritage. Also Icelandic contemporary language and Turluson's are intercomprehensible. So there is that ^^! I know it because I used to live in Iceland. I had a neighbor who was a priestress of Freya. Also most people believe in the gods or elves or other heathen beliefs even when they don't practice But people are not registered as Pagans I think. So fortunately I sincerely doubt that "less than 20000" is a correct estimation. I wondered if you knew about it? Also do you intend to go to Iceland? Christianity didn't really destroyed paganism it was just shrinked so small because of the massive invasions, wars, colonizations and politics credits to the archeologist and researchers who dedicated to find sources i might edit the message when i find them and i can mention them i also may add that the Egyptians, sumerians, and Persians ethnic paganism are actually europeans that migrated from europe to the middle-east doucens of years before they arrived in the Desert

No, Folkism is what ties us to OUR gods they are OUR European gods, our gods are tied to us via our Aryan ancestors, Norse,Germanic,Slavic etc just as i as an Aryan cannot practice African or Carribean religeon such as Hoodoo it makes no sense for a pure African to worship Gods unrelated to his people sure they can but would our ancestors see this outsider as the same as he sees his kin, no just as Anansi would see me as a stranger no doubt Woden or Thunor or Saxknot etc would feel the same about another race. Also for those who call us Folkists racist or Nazis we're not, mostly but some of you new age nuts are complete Communists so i think it evens out non the less although i cant speak for all of us i personally am as such because it makes no sense for me to worship a foreign god wether they be Dagon, Bal, Horus, Allah, Yahwah etc and it dosent make sense for you to either, Also much like Jewdaism our ancestors did mainly keep religeon in there race they did not convert people as the old ways are not a universalist religeon they are Natural to our Race, the idea that any one can worship any god is a new age Wiccan neo pagan concept i dont have a problem with that but just so you know if your not of European descent and you call yourself a Heathen i do not consider you kin, but that is my thoughts perhaps the Gods think otherwise but ill find out on the Helvengen.
