10:1? That's pathetically low for a naturally aspirated engine. For example Mazda's naturally aspirated 2.5L has 14:1 and the turbo has 10.5:1, so still higher than that.

2003 Excursion with a V10 that is about to turn over 250,000 miles. Still idles so smooth that I often think it has died at stoplights. 👍

Same, I have a f250 200k. The idle on the v10 is smooth as silk. If I have the music up it's impossible to tell it's running unless I look at the rpm gauge. Only problem I have with the v10 is oil consumption. I have to put a quart in every 2k if I tow a lot, if I baby it maybe every 3k

These triton 2V non cam phaser motors like conventional 10W40 oil. We use it in all our high mileage motors and they do great. Don’t use that 5W20 crap.

US mechanic here. I live in a rural area with lots of ford trucks. The V10 is very reliable where I live, the engine itself is detuned compared to a 5.4 V8. It doesn't blow head gaskets, it doesn't blow exhaust gaskets or crack exhaust manifolds. The spark plugs might get stuck, but I never see V10 Fords in the shop. Not one in over a year.

must be because they are all in the junk yard ,, the bodies on the trucks fall apart after 10 years too ,,i never did figure out how ford managed to make a truck that rattled so much ,,i've owned 2 of these trucks and even the one i bought that was next to new by the time it had 40K miles it had body rattles and all manner of weird noises like a truck with a million miles .my 50 year old semi truck doesn't rattle and clunk like that piece of crap ford truck did ,,i have a 2019 F350 that so far isn't following that trend

@@Sephiroth5200 i've had 1 V10 and 2 5.4 trucks and all of them had issues at some point ,, my 00 V10 had the infamous sparkplug problem , and after 90K miles ate it's timing chain guides ,, i never had the 5.4 blow a head gasket but timing chains had them repeatedly ,, spark plugs repeatedly ,,and the nonstop burned out ignition coils ,, the v10 despite having the same coils never burned one out ,,the whole truck however fell apart before the engine or transmission failed ,,the farmer i sold it to in 05 is still driving it today.. it's had most of the body replaced and last time i talked to him he still hadn't had any more engine problems besides the timing chains ,,and the usual mileage related issues like alternators , water pumps and oil leaks ,,and i have yet to see a vehicle of any brand that never had those issues

I've got a 2010 E450 bus with the older 2V 6.8L specifically because they were just a little more reliable than the 3V versions. Ford kept these around just for the bus and rv manufacturers due to how solid they are. It drinks gas but I feel way more comfortable with it up here in Northern Canada than the 6.0L diesel.

They were durable enough that Winnebago used them in some pretty large and heavy RV's and they did fine! In E series vans we routinely saw 280-300K miles with no issues other than occasional chain guides.

They were in every Ford F53/F5D motorhome stripped chassis for over two decades, and for half of that time there were no other brands of Class A motorhome chassis in North America so every brand of gas Class A - not just Winnebago - had one. Chassis gross vehicle weight rating was up to 26,000 pounds.

If you do a search here on KZbin you'll find a couple of guys who have made their own 4-valve heads for the Triton V10 by hacking up some 5.4 4-valve heads from the Aviator/Navigator and welding them together. The goal is 700+hp N/A with 13:1 compression and 8,000rpm redline.

Things like that have been going on for decades. Even Chrysler's first prototype V10's were welded up from hacked-up 360 blocks. But don't expect durability from aluminum heads that have been welded together. The heat treat has been ruined, and the material made soft and weak. Any attempt to heat treat back to the original condition will cause warpage, making the head useless.

@@adamguzzo94 They are available in big numbers , modular , and reliable . 10 MPG when you consider that the entire truck is 11,500 lbs is not that bad . Also people who run V10 usually charge their customers for fuel . Haulers , mechanics , serviceman . Fuel costs are part of the deal.

My dad bought a 2000s f250 V10 the only brand new vehicle he ever bought. And pulled a big rv on many trips, the biggest one was over a month on the road. I won't forget sleeping to the cool engine sound. Awesome video!

my work has an old ford superduty worktruck with the triton v10 in it, it does all it needs to but it blows my mind seeing where people drove busses with them in it with no issues. i will absolutely admit though that the truck at my work has something like 300,000 miles so it could do with a looking into the internals due to the hard life it had there well before i got there.....but i will say, EVEN WITH it being high mileage and honestly abused its whole life, that dang thing is an absolute trooper if i ever did know one. i just wish i had the chance to drive it when it was newer.

I remember seeing that engine mostly on Econoline/E-Series vans than in the trucks, as in my country the vans were a grey-import while the trucks had locally-produced versions and Diesel engines were used more often than gassers.

Most of them found in trucks were commercial truck and cab/chassis trucks. My 04 was a cab/chassis and was bought new by a plumbing company. Still pulling fantastic and will hit 250k miles at the end of the month and it's never been cracked open

As a mechanic ive found the 5.4 2v 03+ and the v10 03+ to be extremely reliable engines. 03 was the cylinder head revisement. They all got 9 thread heads and they no longer blew out lol. They would go well into the 350k mile range if maintained. Timing tensioners !! And guides are the only weak link of these engines but we're talking 180k+ before that becomes a threat . I built a 65 mustang coup with a 5.4 2v 9 thread heads i ported , je forged pistons .010 over and mmr forged rods mmr hurricane pump and opg with comp cams s2 came. Home ported my heads and 180 degree exhaust. Gen 1 lightning intake and homemade mid plate for a gt500 supercharged pattern. Vmp gen 3r blower on 18lbs of boost. Made 618 WHP and 781 torque 😂. 2v engines are truly underated AF. Unbelievably reliable engines. Ford did an incredible job with those ... The 3V lol... Well not so much

I got 595,000 miles out of my 2002 E450 v10 box truck. 543,000 out of the transmission. Traded it in at 673,000. Not bad for a gas engine going all out most of the time.

I had a Ford 250 with a Triton V10 in it. I think like 2004 2005. I'm old is what this comment is making me realize. Anyway, the only problems I ever had with that truck was when we had to sit in traffic idling it love to overheat. But it could haul a shit ton of weight both in the bed as well as the trailer I pulled and it was effortless. So as long as you didn't ever have to get stuck in traffic, you were all set

Ford built single overhead cam engines in the 60's and double overhead cam 4 valve per cylinder engines during WW2 to be used in military tanks. Ford didn't need to borrow from European or Japanese manufacturers, they already had the technology.

I may be a freak but I have had the 4.6,5.4 and now have a v10. Never have I had a spark plug issue with any of them. The 5.4 cleared 400000 miles and spun a bearing. Still drove it into my shop.

My work had a Ford F-250 with the V10 engine. I only drove it briefly before we discovered the frame was starting to rust out on it and it was sold off. The best way I can describe it was fun to drive and smooth as butter, but it was incredibly thirsty. The sound of the engine always sounded a bit unusual to me, maybe because I was so used to hearing V8 engines. It had virtually no engine vibrations and was smooth as glass. It had decent power and sounded awesome when under a load. It wasn’t a perfect however. The biggest problem we had was abysmal fuel consumption. It was pretty bad on gas. We’d have to fill up quite frequently and it was costing a lot of money to run it. Sometimes we would rather use the V8 trucks just because it wasn’t so harsh on gas when towing and the power was similar to the V10 anyway. The engine had some problems with the spark plugs as all tritons do. None of them popped out but a few of the plugs were being held in by like 2 threads and the threads were totally mangled. We later had a blown head gasket after the engine overheated when the lower radiator hose blew off. We had to deck the cylinder heads which turned into rebuilding the top end of the engine. Since the cylinder heads were off, we decked the cylinder heads to make them flat and modified the heads by machining our own steel spark plug inserts. We made it so we could use normal spark plugs instead of the crappy two piece spark plugs Ford wanted to use. We pressed the steel inserts into the heads by baking the cylinder head in an oven and using liquid nitrogen on the steel spark plug inserts we machined. It wasn’t easy but it actually worked. We also replaced the exhaust studs because half of them snapped off during disassembly. And after some new head gaskets and new timing chains and some prayers, the engine was running like new. It was a winter project for the crew. But it wasn’t a few years later that we noticed the frame was rusting out pretty bad and we deemed as being unsafe to use. One of the employees bought it from the company and is planning some crazy project with the engine. I really don’t miss that engine since the diesel engines we use now are way more fuel efficient and more powerful.

My mom had a 2000 Excursion with the 6.8. The only problems it had were it went through coils here and there so we kept a couple in the glove box just in case. It also needed a quart of oil once a month. It had almost 400k miles on it before we got rid of it.

If the 4.6 L V8 is a "small block", then the 5.4 L and 6.8 L can't be "big block" (as claimed at 1:57), because they share the same bore spacing. The terms "small block" and "big block" don't just refer to displacement. The Ford Modular engine family has a bore spacing of 100 mm, making it a small-block engine design. The deck height does vary (227 mm for the 4.6 L versus 256 mm for the 5.4 L, for instance), but they're all still small-blocks.

@@davefellhoelter1343 actually the 460 was much more fuel efficient than the V10 ,, i've owned trucks with both engines ,,and my 460 powered 86 F350 would get 13mpg when not towing and if i drove smart it would get 9 towing my 35ft 5th wheel camper ,, my 99 F-350 i had in 2008 wouldn't get over 11 at any time and pulling the same camper got worse mileage than my peterbilt 379,it's got a 3408B cat 18 liter engine and gets 5.8 mpg towing 50,000 pounds,,,a chevy 454 can get better mileage than the V10 too ,,i ditched all my fords in favor of something easy and cheap to fix an chevy C3500 with a 454 with a carburetor

@@davefellhoelter1343 the V10 wasn't bad where power was concerned i just hated it's liking to wind up to the moon , it had just as much pulling power as the 460 ,, the 360 was just like any other big block V8 it produced all it's power below 3500 rpms they weren't built to be fuel efficient ,,, the term NOT A FUEL EFFICIENT VEHICLE was coined to describe any truck with a big block V8 ,the V10 truck i had never broke 6 while towing it would get 10 or so on a long trip where i wasn't towing and i kept the speed under 70 ,,my 460 would average 13 in the same circumstances doing highway cruising at 68 or so ,,my 83 GMC C3500 i have now has a well tuned 454 that makes just shy of 400 horsepower and it averages about 10 when not towing and never goes below 8 and it'll tow my 18,000 pound 5th wheel without breaking a sweat at 70 on the interstate

The best in my stables was a Mopar 318 and 360, second best GM 5.7 or the 8.1 ford 350 about the same with triton. LEAST Fav! is GM 454, Ford V10 or 460 I Could Not Wait to get rid of them! will never own another no matter the deal. had about 6 GM 4.7's over the years, that a decent engine.

My Friend has a 2001 F250 with the 6.8 l v10 over 200 000kms , no problems or issues, it is a truck with a truck motor , do not except fuel mileage like an economy car, his truck is rated for 11 mpg while the 5.4 l. V8 is rated for in a similar truck f250 two wheel drive , 13 mpg with the v8, the best part of the v10 he finds the engine can easy pull his trailers a camper , a boat & a utility trailer easily with having the engine work hard like the v8 version of the same truck. Only issue he had was the exhaust bolts. Which we replaced on both sides in his driveway on a weekend, and the bolts are still holding, after at least 5 years.

Our shop replaced a 6.8 V10 in a small bus. It was the original engine, and it had 530,000 miles on it. All my experience with these is that they are/were extremely reliable.

I have had my 2002 F250 4x4 V10 since it was new. Let me just say it is the only Ford I have ever owned. In 188,000 miles it has never failed me. Mine is a work truck usually pulling a loaded trailer or our camper. I change plugs and coils every 60,000 miles and full synthetic oil every 3000 miles. It still looks good and runs great!! So yes the Ford V10 is an excellent engine!!!

@@dotlaj the regular SOHC variants have been put in mustangs before but they are rather lacking in aftermarket support so you can't make big power on them sadly. That's why it is uncommon to see them last long as the 4.6 4v and 5.0 are more widely embraced. Hell even the 5.4 4v gets over looked for the same reasons as the V10

I had my own mobile fleet repair service for 40 years, I did a lot of diesel work and gas also and there is so many problems with the diesels in the last 10 years and the extreme cost of diesel fuel and maintenance cost I suggested to my household moving customer to get an F 700 moving truck with the V10 triton. These trucks run mostly local and generally only get 10 to 12 thousand miles a year use, even though they get a little less fuel economy the overall operational costs are a lot cheaper plus they are a lot cheaper to buy, sometimes as much as 15 to 20 thousand dollars cheaper. They have had it 2 years and are happy so far.

UPS package cars on the Ford F59 chassis used this engine up until late 21. I had five in my old fleet, and have one in my current fleet. Absolute beast of an engine. In nearly five years with the first fleet, the only real issues I had was a batch of counterfeit spark plugs, one broken exhaust valve spring, and one at 160k that started having excessive valvetrain noise and misfires. I replaced just the one valve spring, and it was still running fine when I left. The other engine got replaced. The new Ford cars have the 7.3, and while it has more power, the howl of that V10 just can't be beaten. Especially when I "forgot" to put the exhaust back together after replacing the transmission, and "accidentally" went for a test drive with it wide open. Ooops.

The Triton V10 and Ford 460 are among my top favorite engines. The sound of the V10 is my favorite albeit with it being a high RPM engine and a screamer at that, although the low end torque of its predecessor is what makes me favor the 460 slightly more. Both are gas hogs but you can’t beat the sound and power of these engines. I only wish they would have shoehorned the V10 in cars like the limited production Mercury Marauders and mustangs, as this would have certainly made the engine and said cars more competitive versus the weaker 5.4 and 4.6 engines. I’m certain if Ford had learned from the flaws of the 2006 5.4’s implementations and added a correctly functioning VVT system and later direct injection in the 2010’s for vastly improved fuel mileage, the V10 would’ve been an uncontrollable monster that would still be made even today. Nonetheless amazing job on these videos and well done.

The V-10 6.8 engine was axed for the Marauder because of a gas guzzler tax. Prototype Mercs ran low 14's and trapped 102-105 mph with a 450 hp HO 6.8L. The low torque 5.0 Mach 1 engine proved unsuitable for this heavy car and it was quickly discontinued. Panthers deserved a better end, but that's why Ford is failing.

Saddly emissions compliance is what neutered them so bad they became worthless. In the end, most were putting out half their capable HP at half their capable fuel mileage in the name of saving the planet/maximizing government taxation theft through excessive fuel consumption.

I used to hang around with the first tech motorheads that were experimenting with that stuff when it first came out and it was amazing what they could do with modern electronics on old-school engines. Some basic head work, a good treatable towing cam or mild performance cam, and a properly designed EFI system were easily able to do 1 HP per cubic inch and walk all over its emissions-compliant twin on power and fuel mileage at the same time and be absolutely bulletproof on any major brand and model of engine back then. What was interesting to me was the guys who had the exhaust gas analyzers claimed they could do all that and stay well within emissions compliance numbers on pump gas too with nothing more than a good catalytic converter. The having to have shit power and fuel mileage to be emissions compliant was just a scam to get the government more tax revenue in any way possible.

The only problem with it is that it was based on the 5.4 and so prone to a few of the things the 5.4 was like the spark plug. A lot of the modular engines are good. With the 4.6 you just torque the spark plugs to the correct spec once and they only come out if you dont realize theres a torque spec. A 4.6 derived 5.8 could have been as unkillable as the 4.6 if done right.

Its based off of the 5.4, but the V-10 can take much more abuse and has proven to last much longer. Thats because it runs so smooth with no vibrations thanks to the split pin crank that allows for 72° firing and a balance shaft.

I want one. No theirs not a ton of after market off-shelf parts for this motor, but if you peak around on YT and the internetz abroad, you'll find some unique builds utilizing this V10, and the latest from an up and coming channel here on YT where these guys have invested a ton of R&D on converting a stock SOHC to a DOHC to mimic the mule motors Ford had in their black ops development back in the late 90's/early 00's for their re-release Cobra that never became more than an auto show piece. Note* as far as the issues described, the modular V8's also shared some of these design flaws.

I got a bad one. A 2006 F250. At 160,000 mile it developed a knock. Main bearing failure. After having the engine rebuilt, many times it would not start. Replaced the engine management computer. After that, frequently, it would misfire badly. Replaced the plugs and a number of coils. Problems continued with not starting and misfiring. I finally sold it with 180,000 miles.

I was pleasured with swapping the 4th engine replacement after only 110000 miles. The 3rd was missing 5 rods when I had to work on it. Terrible service trucks!

These are very good engines. Super reliable, easy to work on, and good power for the displacement. The biggest drawback is the fuel economy, you get 10mpg no matter what. Also the 2 valve versions had spark plug issues, but we don't talk about that.

@@adamguzzo94 The 6.4 diesel makes 350hp and 650 lb/ft of torque at 2000 rpm. The late model of 7.3 Powerstroke (2002-2003) made 275hp and 525 lb/ft of torque at 2800 and 1600 rpm, respectively. The 6.8 V10 makes 350hp at 4000rpm, and 460 lb/ft of torque at 3000 rpm. The late model 460 V8 made 250hp and 400 lb/ft of torque, at around 4400 and 2600 rpm, respectively. The new 7.3 "Godzilla" V8 has power outputs listed at 430hp and 475lb/ft of torque, at 5500 and 4000 rpm, respectively. Now yes, this is diesel vs gas, I know that. My point here is that for the displacement, fuel type, and rpm range, the V10 is not bad on power. Does it suck fuel? Oh yeah, no doubt. But power for displacement is not bad at all, especially considering it's predecessor (the 460 V8) only made 250hp and 400 lb/ft of torque. Also comparing it to the 7.3 diesel (275hp and 520 lb/ft) and the new 7.3 gas (430 hp and 475 lb/ft), the V10 is still arguably better in terms of power output, given the displacement. I'll also note that the 7.3 gas has a slightly worse fuel economy rating than the V10. In reality it's probably about the same. Even the 6.0 LS from Chevy only makes 300hp at 4400rpm, and only 360 lb/ft of torque at 4000rpm. And that's a 6.0! Torque is what matters when you're pulling anyhow, especially in a pickup. And the V10 puts out. I will grant you that the 4 speed automatic transmission does not help with fuel economy or speed, but in terms of power? It's not that bad, especially compared to other engines.

@@Mighty-Quinn I've had over 10k on the back of my 6.0 2500 HD and it pulls it like it's barely there.. and I get about 10-13 mpg.. the power figures on these motors are nonsense.. friend lives on a dirt road and his neighbor has a 09.. talked about how bad ass it is and it will barely bust the tires loose on gravel and his is actually half way taken care of and he complains constantly about his 8-10 mpg.. I've seen it pull his construction trailer and for 450 ft pounds I could have stomped it pulling a loaded car hauler.. so either their over rated as hell or I'm putting out way more than the 350 and 375 ft pounds I though I had.. and the excursions that came with them ain't pulling shit. Could barely pull themselves without needing a direct hookup to BP

Howdy, got one of those Ford V-10 engines in my 2001 Ford Excursion. Torque is outstanding. I pull a towable trailer which is 34 foot long weight 8,000 pounds up 6-7% grade hills. Does this task without breathing hard. Looked at diesel power, the up keep was a little more than the fuel I’d burn. The V10 is low maintenance. Just keep it serviced. Won’t sell the Ford Excursion cause nothing to replace it on the market. Besides I just completely restored the Excursion,which is cheaper than buying a new truck at $100,000 easy or payments of $1,500 or more a month forever. $12,000 in restoring mine is much better and I own it…

At work, we have a great condition example of this engine in a Ford F450 flat deck dually with a manual gearbox. Despite being made in the year 2000, it has less than 30,000kms on it. I LOVE driving that thing.

I see the V10 frequently on gen sets, and I consider it a new engine to the game even though it's been in use for probably 15yrs. Time will tell if it becomes as loved as the 300-6(lsg649) and 2.3-4(lsg423) engines are in this field. I'm not a fan of the 4.2 v6 they used to replace the 300 but it seems to work ok, I haven't seen many issues in those.

F-250 owner here. The 2v v-10 with PI heads is super reliable. In 2019 went from the 2000 super-duty CC to a nee 2019 alumaduty CCLB with the 6.2. Both are amazing trucks. The old V-10 is relegated to taking trash to the dump and the 6.2 tows the 10,000 lb trailers now. The 6.2 has more power and is one to two mpg more efficient across the board.

Theres a guy with a Fox chassis 6.8 running with bike carb itbs. He put down 344whp, 420,ft/lbs to the tire with stock 2v heads cams and exhaust manifolds. Very stout low revvers that sound crazy with true duals.

We have an E450 V10 cube van at work and I much prefer it to the E350 6.2 V8 we have. Both 5 speeds. Runs a lot smoother and quieter, maybe slower but that’s probably the weight of the van. Is it a hot rod engine? Of course not, but for getting 6 tons of vehicle and plumbing tools around, there’s not much else I prefer. A diesel would not really provide anything more, it has enough torque and I’m not racing people in a company vehicle. Haven’t tried the 7.3 yet, but I hope it’s smoother than the 6.2 when we need another van.

@@mclarenCR I'm really only considering gas motors for the vans, we have a diesel super duty for towing when we need that, but for day to day operations, the gas motors have more than enough torque for what we need them for. The gas motors are still cheaper to operate when considering maintenance and initial cost. Upgrading to an f-series cutaway would still cost more than an e-series without including the diesel motor, and Ford stopped selling the e-series with a diesel over a decade ago. That said, the video is addressing the gas V10, which is why my initial comment from 10 months ago was reflecting the benefits of that motor over the 6.2 gasser, and wondering about it's current replacement, the 7.3. I merely mentioned the diesel because I wanted to get it out there that it was beyond our needs for the vans.

The EMS service I worked for used Ford ambulances, mixed diesels and V10s. I deployed for “Hurricane” Florence in 2018 aboard one with a V10 that had a bad lifter that was so loud that I thought a pushrod was going to poke a hole though the hood! Surprisingly, it made it to and from the deployment area without incident!

I love my 6.8 2v. Its a very Strong engine even at 230k miles. I have a 8500lbs travel trailer that i tow regularly with it. I've towed the same trailer with my sister's '19 Ram with the 6.4 v8 and it's just more comfortable with the v10. It cruises and doesn't require alot of throttle input. The 6.4 is too high strung wants to do 80 and suck fuel. Hill climbs with the v10 are uneventful. Gear it down let pull at 3500rpms. The v8s scream up the hills at 5 and 6k. I wish the v10 would've stuck around to get VVT and higher flowing heads, etc. These were the gas equivalent of diesels of the same period.

Good point about max torque being around 3500 rpm. 2008 3V 6.8 v10 with 4.10 gears. Love the way it pulls our RV. Lots of torque even at 2200 rpm, about 65 mph. No oil consumption, 14-15 mpg not towing. It's a keeper.

The only reason the 6.8 L V10 could out due the old 460 V8's was because of how badly emission compliance neutered the old V8's in the end. Take the crappy emissions cam and tuning out of a 460 V8 and input in a good heavy towing cam and matching fuel map tune and it will do 400+ HP and 500+ Ft/Lb of torque all day long while still outdoing the 6.8 V10 by 20% or more on fuel efficiency at the same time.

I think the power thing has to do with regulations and pencil pushers to be honest. Manufacturers sometimes fudge the numbers about HP and rate them lower than they are in order to sell that engine legally in certain car models. Old big block V8's from the 60's put out horse power ratings that were either slightly under, equal to or slightly above their cubic inch rating. So an old 426ci big block could be rated for 400-450hp depending on year and configuration. At least that's one thing I've observed.

I drove a box truck with the triton v10 in it at work and it had a ton of power. It was new at the time so we never had any reliability issues. That being said, it never sounded good and the copious idle time we put on it probably wasn’t great for the engine.

we a had a triton v10 f250 super duty for awhile, thing got 6.5 mpg and we took it from SE ohio to myrtle beach SC hauling a 30 foot camper. it was a 12 hour drive due to fuel stops and an hour nap because we left at 9 at night

Same here with my 01 Excursion. Just have to add 1 qt of oil halfway to an oil change. So technically, it burns 2 qts of oil per 3k miles. I can live with that. She anit fast, but she's a tank when it comes to a crash.

No mention of there being two different v10s? The 3 valve head in pickups and Class A RVs and the 2 valve in E series vans. Ford learned early on that they had to change recommendations for oil in the 3 valve to 5W-20. Anything heavier would lead to the 3rd valve cam follower getting spit out of position after the cam roughed up due to insufficient top end oiling when idling. The 3 valve has a lot more moving parts syphoning off oil pressure at idle speed and startup. The 2 valve has less (including no balance shaft) The balance shafts and cams in the 3 valve are running in bare aluminum bores and unless properly maintained also start losing low speed oil pressure there as they wear. Talked to so many clueless mechanics who would insist 20w oil was too thin and they unwittingly set the hapless owner up for a blown engine.

To me a big advantage of the V10 is the max torque (457 lbs) comes at 3300 rpm. Other NA engines have to be wound up much higher to get to the max torque. We tow a travel trailer and appreciate the broad power band. At 150k miles the exhaust manifold studs needed repair but that's the only engine issue we've had. I will gladly drive it another 10 years or more.

Despite this probably being the biggest gasoline powered production engine Ford made at the time, my 4.2L V6 had bigger individual cylinder displacement and probably the biggest individual cylinder displacement of any gasoline powered Ford production engine of the time. That's probably the only thing I can brag about my truck for, other than getting to shift the gears manually.

I have seen the V10’s powering propane fueled household generators! That would take a 800 gal in ground tank to run the generator for a month, in an all electric home, with 3,600 sq Ft. On the coast of Massachusetts in Feb. !

I has RV with the triton V10 6,8 L. Has 45kmiles on it. No issue . The milage has been between 10-13mpg. Its quiet at normal open road driveing, but some noice uphill and downhill with higher rpm. It sounds like it wil be durabel. Oilchange and filter every 5000miles. I thing the sparkplug pop -out can be rare with these engines, and the same with the triton 4.6 L. If you dont overload and drive smooth, it will be a less risk that this will happen.

I have an 04 2v f350 v10 literally the most reliable vehicle ive owned. Ive put 40k+ miles when i bought it with 211k miles and it hasn't left me stranded yet And it hasnt pulled everything ive hooked it up to. It can definitely tow more than 15k on a gooseneck theres a guy here on youtube who oulled 20k of hay with his f250 v10

Every v10 I used at work blew out the spark plugs and exhaust manifold gaskets. Why ford thinks a 6mm diameter thread is good enough to bolt iron manifolds to aluminum heads is beyond me. Especially in the rust belt where they weld themselves to the head. Ford gets many things right, but what they get wrong is infuriating and stupid. I’ll take a LSv8 any day for power and economy and easy fixing.

Compressed iron powder? Is that compacted graphite iron? That's what Ford uses in the 3.5 Ecoboost for example and it's the best material for strength to build engines out of.
