The reason he's underrated is simple: the "sonics" of his music are not very commercially-oriented. This means that he would never have an album that debuts in top 10 or even top 3 in Billboard 200, for example. The lack of commercial success prevents people from referring to him as a "big" rapper. It's true that he works with great producers, but there are producers who are both "great" and also commercially oriented. Freddie's producers just don't belong to that group. Compare him to Pusha T and you will see the difference. Both are coke rappers and both have amazing, if not near impeccable, catalogues. I would say they are equally great rappers: Pusha T is more focused on wordplay while Freddie has more versatile flows. But one wouldn't say Pusha T is underrated the same way Freddie Gibbs is. This is because Pusha T still tries to be commercially-oriented by collaborating with producers who could give him commercially-oriented sonics, like The Neptunes and Kanye West. Def Jam serves Pusha T well.
