Is GameStop Still Up to Their Xbox 360 Trickery? - Opening Up a Used Console from GameStop

Last generation, while the Xbox 360 was the main focus in game stores, many consumers were struggling with the dreaded "Red Ring of Death" that plagued the console. For a while GameStop was selling refurbished units that had new thermal paste on the CPU/GPU chipsets, the x-clamps replaced with screws and washers, and the fans would be modified to run at 8.7 volts of power consistently to keep the system cooler. Many people noticed however that aside from these refurbished consoles being louder, they also seemed to fail rather quickly. Of course, there are many people who have had nothing but luck with their GameStop refurbished consoles, but it was bad enough where the word was getting out across the Internet. It was not officially reported on until early 2015, long after the console's prime time, that GameStop was knowingly selling temporarily repaired consoles. ExtremeTech source cited here:

This console was purchased near the end of 2017, for fun I wanted to open it up and see if it was a victim of a GameStop refurbishing or if it was simply tested and boxed up.
A few weeks after this video was released, I managed to borrow a console clearly labelled as a "refurbished" unit from a friend so we could see what GameStop's ROC did, you can watch the follow-up here:

Can confirm gamestops "Refurbishing" amounts to taking a moist cloth and wiping it down and making it look pretty. This is going back a long time ago, but I worked at a gamestop as a christmas holiday hire. One of the things they had me doing was "Refurbishing" game consoles. Well they weren't satisfied with how I was doing the job. I was actually testing consoles to make sure they powered on and that they worked, made sure the controllers worked, opening them up to ensure they were clean inside. I actually came across a lot of consoles that flat out did not work. Well gamestop didn't like that I was actually trying to do an honest job, I received a talking to by the manager saying that my job was to just clean the outside with a damp cloth and package the items together for sale. I told them I wasn't comfortable doing that because I had found a lot of broken consoles. Spoilers: They let me go from the job early because my desire to be honest meant less money in their pockets.

I think it was 2010 that I bought an Xbox 360 from GameStop used....bought one, RRoD out of the box...returned it, got another, same thing. So went back to the store and told them that before I took another system home, I wanted them to take it out of the box, hook it up and let me see it working before I take it home. I am not kidding when I say they opened up 7 or 8 systems that all had the RRoD, on top of the two that I returned....when I finally got one that didn't have the RRoD, it lasted longer than 30 days, but not by much

That came from a store. We have to write our names on those stickers, in store. Didnt go to a warehouse. If it didnt have a name then its from warehouse. The date on the sticker is the date it got traded to the store.

Yeah, he keeps saying refurbished, but this was not refurbished by Gamestop, just tested, taken in, boxed, put for resale. Refurbished is when it's already broken and gets repaired. At best, he's right that it was refurbished by Microsoft. All refurbished are used, but not all used are refurbished.

Hi, Ex gamestop tech here. We had over 10,000 of these units broken at our warehouse. I was the lead tech and my quota was usually around 52 units per day to repair.. What I can tell you is that even though you see the microsoft sticker up front that doesn't mean it was never opened.. We would use a heatgun on those.. That console was 100% several parts that we had lying around in a bin.. In the event that there was no warranty sticker we had replacements from microsoft on a roll. The reason why they were so cheap is to clear the warehouse from them.. They were a plague

Lmfao, GameStop tried to sell me a “refurbished” PS3. I managed to get it returned, but not before I ripped it open, and you won’t BELIEVE!! At least 30% of the internals were RUSTED! Like, completely rusted! Not to mention the 4 minutes it took to boot up ANY game, and when finally in the game, would completely drop all your FPS, freeze, then show you 1 frame for 4 seconds, skip to another frame, etc. literally, they sold me a PS3 NOT EVEN IN WORKING CONDITION!!!! The guy who sold it to me, looked SO REGRETFUL on his face when he handed me the box he had grabbed from the back of the store. I bought it legit, and they are the *BIGGEST* *BIGGEST SCAMMERS* I have EVER dealt with! I refuse to ever visit another GameStop/EB Games again! I got a used 360 that RROD’d in months, a fat PS3 that was FAR dirtier on the inside (massive dust ball) with busted fan, and a DS Lite that didn’t even turn on. Used consoles are basically a crapshoot from them, they need to clean and test properly.

The sad thing is that many consoles traded to Gamestop/EBGames are actually dying units that overheat and/or the drives are failing...I could have traded one of my original Xbox One's for $200 credit, but the drive is flaky, so I kept it...sadly, most people will trade it off, thus becoming the problem of someone who could never afford a new console, but is happy to finally be able to own one...cheers.

MrMario2011 hi there, I recently was laid off due to low sales performance with GameStop. I wanted to let you know the stickers on that box indicate someone brought it to the GameStop store and sold it to them (obviously). It was not determined to be defective by the employees so it stayed in store and was never sent to Grapevine, Texas to be refurbed. The box itself would have different stickers and would say refurbished instead of pre-owned. I can tell the GameStop you bought this from barely tested the console and didn't bother trying to clean it. Since the disc drive didn't open like it was supposed to and they left the disc in there, I question if they even plugged it in. I hope this was helpful in clarifying some things even though this video was a couple months ago

I found 2 xbox 360's in the trash one day. Had all the cords, and controllers. Disk drives wouldn't open , so I took them apart, ordered the rubber rings for the disk drives and they both worked. Sold one and I still have the other one . Both had jasper motherboards and hdmi

This is not a refurbished console, the console is preowned, the difference between a preowned console and a refurbished is that when a console is traded in after testing 2 options are available. 1 it is marked defective due to cosmetic damage, hardware/software malfunction. This system is then sent to the RoC "refurb op center" to be refurbished. Quality control sucks recently. Or 2 it passes gets put on trade hold for 30 days and then marked sellable and all data wiped and reset to factory settings. The "SD card removed..." label is a generic label used to identify serial number for ever console including handhelds. It also denotes when the system memory was reset and by whom. If you want an actual refurbished system you need to ask for one specifically. They have a box labeled "refurbished"

They come shipped in different boxes, either via RSB or directly from warehouse, the packaging is different, the included accessories are different, and there's an instruction paper in it. They are easily distinguishable. I worked at GS for 3 years, lol.

I did this black friday deal too. Had a terrible time with it. I got home from work on black friday. I ran to gamestop, eager to see if they had 360s left. I get there, and they dig around, and find ONE last one, that someone reserved and never picked up. So I buy it, make sure everything is there, and run home. It was DOA. I tried different outlets and power strips, i tried a different power brick, nothing. It was DEAD. I take it back the next day, and the person at the counter is skeptical about my honesty. They don't want to plug it in, but eventually give me my money back anyway. Then they try REALLY hard to sell me an xboxOne, saying stuff like "man why would you even want a crusty old system anyway? The xbone is newer, faster, has way better games, etc" I reply that I just wanted a netflix machine for my room, since I keep all my actual systems and games in my living room for when friends come over. This lady and her manager try so hard to sell me an xbone that i straight up walk out and they almost chased me out the door trying to make a sale. I kid you not, people. I will not be going back to that gamestop for a good while. Obnoxious. I know they have to try to make sales, but shit, i said no already quite a few times AFTER they didn't want to give my money back for a broken console THEY sold me.

Bullet1520 As silly as it might sound, I don't normally test them either. Don't get me wrong, it's not because I don't trust you- but rather the opposite. You say it's broken, I'll label it defective and have it sent to warehouse. Even if you were lying, warehouse'll just figure out within moments of booting it up and set it back up for resale. In the meantime, you'll get your replacement... normally. Sometimes they're just out of stock like your scenario. Even if they're out, they should be able to check inventory of nearby GS' or do a Web-In-Store sale and have a different XB360 shipped to you (taking about 7-10 business days). But like Matt Kuhlen stated, you might want to look into an Amazon Firestick if you're only shootin' specifically for Netflix.

It's not modded it's "Refurbished". But it's illegal because elites didn't get the jasper revision right? Therefore it's modded. I bought a used jasper from GS after my 3 consoles rroded. I've put 1000s of hours on it and it is still working fine. I've never even changed the thermal paste, which is why i expected it to break at some point in time. But it's held up, i would expect that chageing the past to AS5 would make it immortal.

Falcon chipsets have a reduced cpu, but the gpu is the same as the original...this is what overheats...any console after nov 2008 should be a Jasper chipset that no longer overheats...good luck

Nickjet 45 Actually the over heating causing the GPU to cook which is what the 3 rings error is was not directly due to Microsoft. PlayStation had the same exact issue with their PlayStation 3 in the early models too it was less common because of the lay out of the PlayStation yes. However if you take a look inside the case the hardware is 100% the same on Xbox 360 and PlayStation the issue was that the AMD GPU would overheat and liquify itself internally. Which if you know AMD processors and on board graphics is they are cheep have a lot of power typically but also consume a lot of power and run very hot especially around 2005. They are much better now a days but man I can't tell you how many computers from early 2000s with overheated and cooked GPU all laptops mostly HP and they all every single one of them were AMD motherboards and if you looked them up usually there's reports of the GPU getting cooked. Meanwhile you can look up these same computers but with Intel motherboards in them instead and no over heating or fried GPU. All GameStop referbs are legal whether done by someone watching a KZbin video fix or someone who you'd say knows what they are doing. It's up to you if you decide to buy a referb electronic there is always that risk that it was repaired by someone who didn't have a clue what they were doing sometimes even what you would call a pro can't fix something even though they thought they could.

Just gonna write some notes on this as I watch since I used to work in the refurb department at gamestop specifically on 360 consoles a number of years ago. 1) I'm not aware of any "official microsoft stickers" that got placed on the consoles upon completion, but some of them did remain intact when the console was taken apart. 2) the gamestop sticker is missing in this video, but looks like it has been through the system multiple times because the residue from one is still there ( 7:44 to the right of the LED ring) 3) the sticker under the disk tray just before 8:11 is probably only still there because someone didn't bother to remove the DVD drive and actually clean it (a quick turn around system "oh hey this appears to work under my terrible test that doesn't test anything lets just ship it back out") 4) 8:22 as described before that isn't the factory sticker, that's the gamestop holographic void sticker that gets applied after "a job well done". Not sure why a new one wasn't replaced there, but it's probably because it didn't actually come all the way back to refurb -this time- (but obviously had before) 5) 8:42 that residue is in fact an older version of the gamestop refurb sticker. If I remember right it contained text about the nature of refurbs; a disclaimer and caution 6) 9:40 Those blackops disks became the "standard test disk" at some point. Not sure why because they didn't have anything that would stress the system enough to tell you there was something wrong. Funny they left it in there though. 7) 9:47 lol not wiped. Yeah pretty much confirmed it didn't come back through refurb on its last trip to gamestop (but again, had in the past) 8) 12:00 those x clamps get placed back on the system after the GPU/CPU solder re-flow process.. or at least I think I remember them getting back in there. Maybe they were removed entirely. 9) 15:46 Gamestop did fanmods on EVERY 360 that came through refurb there for a while. These devices also had to have an official UL label put on the back over where the serial number is. You can tell because it'll be a glossy cover/finish over that area. Looks like you touched on this later in the vid Otherwise it sounds like you know your stuff! Great work on the video :) Let me know if you have any questions about the process from the gamestop perspective.

Water cooling any console would be pointless unless it has degraded *so* much that it shuts down after standard use. I _would_ advise just fixing the issue, but the vendors don't want the consumer to either know how the hardware works and/or do not provide the resources to do this. Besides, consoles and their games are optimized to avoid over-heating. This is one of the "limitations" that people usually reference in regard to consoles. It _might_ be worth it if you have a modded console with performance enhancements.

Your dog has yeast (not ear mites) in her ears. Buy some chlorihexiderm earwash from the vet squirt it in and take cotton balls and mop out the dogs ears and she will stop scratching them or get an infection. It will get really bad if left untreated. Jam the cotton down as far as you can because dogs ears are shaped like an L so you can't hurt the ear drum.

Because you got one that was pre-owned and even had a reformatting name on it, it wasn’t opened up at all. If an employee tests a console and checks it in as Pre-Owned, then it will jus sit in the back until it is sold. Nothing is done to it at all, so no trickery. No refurbishments on consoles are EVER done in store. On the flip side, if you had gotten a refurbished one instead, that means it came from the warehouse. In which case it was opened up and “cleaned and repaired,” which could mean anything, including dirty tricks.

I’ve never heard of any 360’s failing once the jasper revision came out. I had about 3 fails until I got a Jasper (They are the last ones with the original form but were reworked quite a bit internally) in around 2009 and since then I havent had any problems, it ran whisper quiet without fuss and still does to this day.

Bought a used 360 from Gamestop. It shit on me after a couple months before getting really loud. Obviously to me that sounded like it was overheating, so I opened it up and saw that the thermal paste wasn't applied properly. After doing so, it ran quieter than the new version of the 360. Later, the laser died, and then I replaced it. Now this thing loads instantly, plays like it's new.

Unless the paste evaporates, there clearly wasn't enough to do the job, and it did have the game stop sticker replacing the ms holo sticker. I got two of these on Black Friday (actually technically three). One was a used Opus, had never been opened by GameStop, the other was a GameStop refurbed Falcon that definitely has its fans modified to run constantly, it hasn’t died yet but I also haven’t given it much playtime. Also has some weird DVD drive issues on some games. The third was an RRoD unit that I swapped, the first store I hit up, I went to one opening later to grab the second one. If your console was GameStop refurbished, there would be a big sticker over the serial number sticker on the back.

Ps3 had its fair share of problems too.it was mainly the thing would sound like a jet engine or disk read problems. Im one of those ones.my superslim ps3 died last year when i was playing uncharted and it all of a sudden turned off and showed a read light,but i could still hear the fan.shortly afterwards it showed a yellow light.it was the saddest day of my life.luckily my xbox 360 slim which i got in 2012 still working with no problems which is suprising because xboxes never lasts as long as playstations.i even saved up money to get another xbox if it fails.

I had the Elite for years but I assume dust killed my disc drive from reading and so just sent it in for repair and ate the cost. The consoles were still not super cheap then, plus I do enjoy NOT using another HDMI port along with not wanting to fiddle with information transfers. Actually my Original Xbox system still works to this day, just had the power/open strip worn off so have to use the emergancy release to open and pull the power cord, hahaha.

The 360 you purchased was inspected by the worker in the store, said to be good enough to resale without refurbishing. The stickers are printed at the store level to protect the employees' jobs. Even if it doesn't have an SD card, it's just a generic printed sticker.

GameStop gets accused of performing temporary fixes on some consoles, so one is tested years later to confirm this is no longer true. That is very definitive. Having had a 360 that never experienced the red ring issue and a Note 7 that never blew up, I think it is important to remember that there was no need to fix one that never had a problem. Regardless, both have long been replaced by newer hardware. I guess it doesn't really matter.

I don't know of anyone else mentioned it, but you didn't get a refurbished console. It's been a while since I worked there, but they used to have two separate SKUs for used consoles. One was just a used one (as if buying directly from the previous owner), with the HDD taken off (which was sent out to be wiped/replaced), but the actual console was just boxed, maybe wiped down, and sold. No refurbishing done. Then, there was a second SKU for refurbished units. The sticker would read "" at the end if it was actually sent out to get any repairs done. Also, fun fact, if the system had a red ring, it was common for the repair center to wrap the console in a towel and place in an oven (on a low setting) to "trick" the heat sync into thinking it was properly cooled off. It only lasted for maybe 3 or 4 restarts (or 8 straight hours of play) before throwing the red ring again. It was horrible.

My first 360 died to E74. It was one of the original systems. Instead of sending it back, I just went out and got one of the Arcade systems and used the hard drive from my first system with that. When that console also succumbed to E74, I did send it back to Microsoft and got it replaced with a system that has worked fine ever since. A couple years ago, I decided to give the x-clamp removal "fix" just to see if it actually worked at all, because I didn't believe it would. Much to my surprise, it did, and I actually used that system for a few months. It never showed E74 or red ringed again, but I ended up retiring it back to the closet because it was having some issues with random freezing. It was kind neat loading it up and seeing the original dashboard after so many dashboard revisions, and that's all I really wanted anyway, so I considered the experiment a success.

So, I worked at Gamestop. You have a pre-owned xbox. You do not have a refurbished xbox. If the system passes a basic test then we tear a sticker off a roll in the back(that is the formatted by sticker). Take compressed air to it to clean the dust out. Wipe it down and reformat it. This is always done through the options. The idea that we update anything is false. In fact. When people come in with their xbox one wiped before they trade it. This is the only time we update used consoles. Because on xbox one we have to in order to open the settings. So whatever you think happened to this xbox likely did not happen. Also, when we send a console to be refurbished. We often do not get that console back. It gets sent out to whichever store needed the stock. In this video, someone traded an Xbox 360 in August. An employee reformatted, cleaned it. Then it sat there and waited for black Friday. Which you picked it up. I worked last year's black friday. We might have gotten like 4 360s from a warehouse. Sorry to burst your bubble dude. Really I am. Gamestop is terrible.

False, it's a Visa gift card, not a GameStop gift card, meaning you can use it anywhere that takes credit cards. Whenever I get those rebates I usually redeem the full amount to reload my Amazon credit and then use Amazon to order stuff I need or want. Avoid having to worry about having a few cents left on your card since you use the full amount in one go!

Hey man, I know this video is about a month and a half old, but it just came up in my KZbin queue. I used to be a GM at a Gamestop. Not an overly wonderful experience, but it did give me quite a bit of insight into their business practices. The system you got is NOT refurbished, but IS used/preowned. There's a difference, and you can tell by the shape/labeling on the box. What this means is that your system was sold to Gamestop by a customer. Gamestop then cleaned and packaged the system in the store, labelled it, and then sold it to you. It never left the store, and if it did, it was just moved around from one store to another. Refurbished consoles, however, are sent to the warehouse in Grapevine from the store as the result of a defective exchange. The warehouse will then determine what's wrong with the console, replace any parts they can, and then ship it back out to a store in a *refurbished* box, which is a slightly different shape. Inside of a refurbished console's box will be some sort of Styrofoam/bubblewrapping in order to not damage the hardware in transit, since it would have come straight from Texas to any other US location. Also, the label on the side won't have the signature line, where the employee signed off on the console. It would have a serial number on a more rectangular sticker, instead. You might want to redo this study using an actual *refurbished* system instead. Generally speaking, a store will try to push the refurb before the used consoles. Just an FYI, mate! I used to refurb 360's for a pawn shop, including removing the x-clamps for a specific set of screws and nylon washers, and a specific modification to the heatsink to force better air flow over it. My own gen2 refurb unit came in as an rrod, and after the x clamp replacement and heatsink mod, it lasted 3 years before total failure.

GameStop Employee here. I was unaware this was even a thing. Never even heard rumors about GameStop xbox360 which is what lead me to click on this video. I can tall you, our trade in method is simple. Step 1: check for physical damage. If no physical damage, proceed to step 2. If physical damage, defect it, then ask if they would like to continue with the trade or not. Step 2: plug in machine to tv and power it on to see if it works. Yes? Continue with sale. Not working? Defect it and ask if they would like to continue. All defective machine are shipped out of the store. So if you are worried, we sticker our machine, traded or refurbished. If it's not "GS Refurb" than we took the machine in, in working condition, reformatted it, and put it back up for sale. Also the "SD card removed" is just a generic label for all machines that need a serial number. So like a phone, would have the sd card removed. And the defective option is up to us employees if it is in working condition. Even if it boots up and works, we ask ourselves, "Would I want to buy this in this condition?" if we wouldn't, then we defect it. Because we do believe in giving you our best products. At least my store does. I have heard of stories from other stores. If you want our best service, go to a prestige store. If you feel like the store you are going to is perfect, but not prestige, please fill out those surveys on the receipt we give you!! Those are what get us to prestige stores, giving you all more pro-days and more sales!!

Just for Info. I did the screw method to fix my RRoD and it still works today. I did this in 2011-2012. Lasted 6 years and still works. but now I am adding water cooling.
