I know a Botafogo fan who saw his whole career or at least the bulk of it and he along with so many others says every week Garrincha put on one man shows, Extraordinary dribbling outrageous tricks and endless assists with defenders looking lost. And like George Best he played on poor fields in an era of brutal tackling with almost no protection from officials. Unbelievable

One of the greatest Brazilian players of all time one of the greatest players of all time, not as well remembered because Pele took the limelight but Garincha was on par with a PELE, and without him they probably would not have won the 62 World Cup as Pele was injured from the group stage.

Dribbling back in those days with the rough uneven pitch, heavy ball, gumboots and defenders who were allowed to kick you up to a certain extent was a much more difficult proposition than it is today. Not just dribbling but all aspects were at a major disadvantage. We all saw what happened to Messi in the earlier Copa America )the previous to last one) when he was rendered useless on the rough pitches and at the end of it he complained about the state of the pitches. Garincha was the original version of greatest dribblers followed by the likes of Maradona and Messi. Maradona had great respect for Garincha. Great Garincha and Maradona - RIP

No doubt, one of the greatest individual performances of all time. So brilliant! But I think the greatest performance we've ever seen, is Maradona's performance against Belgium, in the semifinal of the 86' World Cup. He scored 2 brilliant goals, set up goals, which his team mates missed. He showed his overall repertoire of genius skills and artistry, in that match alone. But what I liked was the more natural and unique playing styles and the way the game was played. Nowadays it's all about covering space and limiting space. They would have laughed at that back then.

Do have any idea what type of physical condition you need to have to be able to control a 2kg object with your feet for 90+ minutes? The game was slow for a reason, and there was no red card. Defenders could beat Garrincha as much as they wanted. Footballers nowadays wouldn’t last more than 45 minutes if they were suddenly transported to a match in the 1960s.

Before Cruyff, Holland was a 2-nd or 3-rd rate country in the football world. With him they reached the final of a W. Cup which Beckenbauer himself has admitted "home advantage" helped his team to win the final. Add to that, 3 CL titles in 71,72 and 73, and 3 Ballon Dor. If Cruyff had not left Ajax for Barca, he could have been the 1-st player to win 5 or 6 Ballon Dor, and many more CL honors. So much for being overrated!!

Garrincha had a great reputation and some think he was better than Pele. I have seen other videos of Garrincha where he shows great dribbling skills. However, in this game I thought Wilson, the full-back, with help from Charlton, was superb in handling Garrincha. Garrincha took his goals well but note, neither came about in positions where he was being marked by Wilson. Garrincha was before my time but I do remember the Brazilian wingers of the 1970 team, Jairzinho and Rivellino, and they were amazing.

Apart from losing the ball time and time again he tended to beat players by sudden bursts of speed rather than pure skill, unlike Pele, who had amazing technique. Not denying he was a very good player but didn`t live up to the hype on this particular video

Someone that has never seen another Garrincha performance and doesn’t know much about football at that time, and watches football nowadays regularly, would def be a bit disappointed, but let me enlighten you a bit: 1) in the 1960s, there was no red card. Defenders were free to beat up players as much as they wanted, without any risk of leaving the match early. Pelé spoke about this in an interview, saying that after the 1958 title, he and Garrincha were hunted in 62 and 66, which made him very worried that his career could end due to a serious injury. 2) the ball was made of a particular type of leather that made it absorb water and humidity almost instantly, so it weighted in average 2kg (sometimes even more). As a comparison, the ball from the early 70s until today, all balls couldn’t weight more than 450g, due to new FIFA regulations to make the game safer and more fluid. 3) This match was played in terrible weather conditions: fog, slippery lawn, and poorly kept field. 4) In particular regarding Garrincha: he came to the WC with an injury, and recovered during the championship. He seems to be ok here, but injuries do affect players mental condition, because the period of inactivity can make them less confident to perform their best. He seems to get looser and looser during the game, so this might also have been an issue. Extra fact: Garrincha had a genetic disability (he had bent knees, and one leg bigger than the other, by about 2.5 inches), so injuries were pretty serious for him, and did cause his career to end sooner than normal (apart from other personal issues). This was still a historic performance - England had the best defense in the world at the time, and were considered favourites to win this WC. So considering all these issues and the context, this is definitely one of the top 3 performances of the WC. Maradona’s in 86 might have been a bit better to watch, but it was a different time, with better conditions for players. Maradona would have never scored those goals in 86 with a ball from the 1960s. So considering how powerful Garrincha’s kicks were and the speed he was able to achieve, it is impressive what he could do. Maybe looking for other WC performances and his performances with Botafogo, despite not having many available, will make you realize how fantastic he was. There’s a reason he is considered to be in the top 5 of all times by the vast majority of critics.

It's funny how people hate on Garrincha's performance. Pele got injured and he took on this team. He scored the first goal with a header vs the strongest team at headers in the world and then scored an unexpected long range shot he perfectly placed into the upper right corner. He took England on with his endless dribbles and crosses and made them win the WC. Yet people diminish it. Those people think Messi winning the WC with endless penalties for Argentina's dives is impressive though.

Assisti esse jogo contra a Bélgica, Diego foi espetacular. Garrincha, Pelé e Maradona - os três gênios do futebol e Ronaldinho o maior artista. Não assisti todos jogos de Garrincha em Copa do Mundo, mas acho que esta não foi sua maior atuação. Só tenho certeza que das que vi, ele jogou bem em todas. Игрок конечно выдающийся, видно что уверен в себе и на кураже, два гола - решил игру. Но по игре в целом часто передерживал мяч, финтил на месте и тормозил атаку. Один и тот же финт и уход почти всегда вправо, левой ногой почти не владеет : когда обводит влево - почти всегда потеря. Конечно тогда все крайние нападающие так играли и на их фоне он выделялся. Кстати непонятно почему он так часто пасется в центре, а правый фланг атаки пустует - явно нарушает структуру игры, по тем временам редкость.

Zidane vs Brazil in 2006 was pretty good.. He put on a masterclass of quality. Eusebio vs North Korea coming back from 3 nil down and scoring 4 in 1966 is worth a shout too. People say Maradona against Belgium but they were not a great opponent, they conceded 15 goals in 7 games in that tournament and only got through on pens because Spain were awful. That Belgium side are probably the worst to ever make a semi final.

It was Garrincha who beat England. Scored the first and the third goal, and deserves the assist for the second goal after his hard shot was rebounded off the keeper for Vava to head home. Garrincha did much the same against Chile in the semi final, scoring twice and setting up one goal in Brazil's 4-2 win in that match.

Não vi Garrincha jogar e não sei os critérios para escolher os melhores, se são os títulos, número de gols etc; Vi Maradona, gênio, Ronaldinho, artista e Zidane, extraordinário. Não vi Di Stéfano, Cruijff, Beckenbauer muito pouco e outros grandes, mas nunca vi ninguém fazer o que Garrincha fazia, nem Pelé.

He was a fantastic player but seems to me he hold the ball way too much. I think Pelé was a lot better, more complete and more straightforward to either scoring or assisting the goal. One positive point though is that at least Garrincha would score.

Well, he scored a header in this game against a team as strong at headers as England. Then he took a long range shot he placed perfectly, which seemed of a calibre England were not accustomed to. And then be would continuously take them on dribbling.

Ordem de focar o jogo no Garrincha. E também porque talvez o jogador não se sentisse tão confiante pra executar. É uma manobra difícil de realizar com aquela bola e o campo nas condições da época, ainda mais com a Inglaterra marcando muito bem. Pelé faria isso com maestria, mas não outro jogador brasileiro qualquer.
