I'm a teacher of 7 to 8 year olds. I'm surprised that all these people who are saying, "gen alpha can't read!" are forgetting that Gen Alpha was supossed to be learning to read when covid broke out and we sent all the kids home to learn online. Then we brought them back with masks on. A vital aspect of learning to read is learning the sounds letters and letter combinations make. That's harder to learn when masks cover up faces that would allow teachers to show what your mouth should look like when saying those sounds, and when they can't see the shapes of the mouths of the kifs doing it. Plus, the masks muffle sounds. As for computers, that's the fault of all those idiots who kept saying, "Gen Alpha are native to the internet and computers!" So they thought that they didn't need to teach them about the internet of computers and are now shocked by the results. That's not how the internet works. You don't just put things in front of them and hope for the best. You don't do that with reading, why would ypu with the internet? The Andrew Tate thing is true, though. Very sad. But it's related to the internet thing where we didn't teach them well.

7 and 8? Why and how are 7 and 8 year olds watching Andrew Tate?
@FanOfTheMyths5 ай бұрын
@ZZ-qy5mv Unlimited access to KZbin and TikTok. Someone did an experiment once that it only took a few minutes of clicking things young boys like before they start recommending Andrew Tate on TikTok. I have to reach out to parents and explain what their kids are seeing and show them how to set up KZbin Kids on all devices. It's especially hard when the parents don't know English, so they don't know what their kids are listening to.

I’m baffled by the “gen alpha can’t read” rhetoric, because reading compression is something that’s monitored at the national level. Post-pandemic, the average reading ability of students fell to roughly 1990 levels. So by that logic, does that mean Gen X can’t read either? As with everything else, the issue is far more complicated than a bunch of holier than thou folks on social media are making it seem.

Teal. Also my mom is teacher and has been for over 20 years. I've talked to her about the issue and she says that children have undoubtedly and noticably become less able to not only read/write/learn but also to appropriately regulate their emotions. I do think it's a very real problem but I also think that it is a fixable problem. Limiting screen time and teaching children to appreciate reading, writing, and getting outside could be the difference. Also teaching young boys to respect women would be pretty helpful...

I don't want to hate on kids. For the most part a lot of the silly things they do is due to there age. I do, however, use the seeming disfunction of gen alpha as a way to hate on millennials, specifically millennial parents. I think it is mainly the fault of millennial parents that these kids are being raised by iPads and having a harder time reading and doing other things. We'll see how it plays out as gen alpha moves into adulthood though.

His Dad works with computers so he was drawn to them, he completed the first Portal at 3 because his spatial awareness has always been high. He was reading before he was 5 and used to read to the other kids in preschool. He still loves reading. However, he can be judgmental over very minimal things, though he is aware of it and catches himself and then feels bad he got so judgmental. He certainly enjoys apps like YT and Reddit. I don’t think it’s that far-fetched that Gen Alpha might be falling short of that critical word gap we normally see from poor kids whose parents can’t read to them regularly (and put them in front of the TV instead). If you don’t hit a certain threshold of words learned by 1st grade, there’s loads of evidence that you’ll probably never catch up to your peers all the way through high school.
