Hello, I disagree about whether a gigabit connection is worth it or not. I've got a 900/900 connection for ~60 dollars a month (UK) and while of course the majority of bandwith remains unused the fact that speed/time is no no longer a consideration for anything, anything, I or my family do on the internet is incredible. We host media rich websites from our garage, stream our music and 4k videos over the internet to our mobile devices, work from home with 0 lag and timer wasted through file transfers and upload 4k YT vids in the blink of an eye. It also means that we can all be doing that simultaneously with 0 impact. It's incredible.

Thanks for the comment! Please let me clarify, I don't doubt the benefits of gigabit internet. It has many practical uses. If you're someone who has multiple 4k streams, downloading large files, and hosting a website you will benefit from the higher bandwidth. I have gigabit which allows me to upload these videos in seconds instead of hours. It’s great to have an internet connection that you never have to worry about. My point is, in some places it can be really expensive to obtain those speeds. If you're a user who's watching a couple of HD streams and surfing the web you may never reach the full potential you're paying for. So, why pay for something you may never use especially when a cheaper plan and speed can get the job done. Gigabit has its uses but personally I don't see it as a must, at least not yet.

@@AppleGuideWeb yup, can't disagree with that generally. It's likely overkill for me too tbh if I monitored the bandwidth usage. What will be interesting though is - when gigabit connections are common as muck - what new services will make use of the increased bandwidth. It'll be a funny day indeed when we're bemoaning the fact a synchronous gigabit connection just ain't fast enough.

Thank you very much for making this video it was very helpful in helping me understand about Gigabit Internet and how it works upsides and downfalls very informative keep up the good work :)

I'm all for blaming ISP but the 940mbps limit is actually Ethernet fault on new 2.5 Gbps Ethernet you should be able to hit the 1 Gbps at least during non peak hours depending on your provider...... As for the wifi not being fast enough even 2 years ago it was.......... wifi 6 is 4 years old already and supports up to 1.2Gbps there are lots of limits on this because wifi distance blah blah blah.... but it is possible at short distances ....

So its 2023. I currently have 18Mbps up (dsl) I am paying 90$ a month. I am getting 1 gig up 1 gig down (fiber) upgrade next week for 20$ cheaper than my 18mbps DSL connection. I would also like to add that problem number 1 in your video also applies to DSL and Cable networks too. You never actually get the advertised speed that you are paying for.

There's quite a bit of misinformation in this video. First coax can easily support 1 Gbps it can actually handle way more than that. The issue isn't tv and phone because phone calls don't go over coax with a cable company. It is going over the internet like any other voip provider even with the modems that have RJ11 ports. If you don't believe me about coax having plenty of bandwidth look at moca you can get 2 Gbps speeds so there's no issue with coax. The real problem lies with what cable companies use for spectrum there's just not enough bandwidth allocated for the upstream side as back in the day catv systems were made to only transfer data in one direction. Now we move onto the issues with gigabit speeds. It's not overhead that keeps you from getting the full gigabit speeds it's because your standard 1 Gbps port will only do 1 Gbps which equals to around 940 to 960 Mbps. Secondly you don't have to get gigabit over fiber to notice an improvement of fiber and other types of broadband. In most instances fiber is going to have lower latency than your cable or dsl provider. With a typical cable or dsl connection the lowest latency you'll get is around 30-40 ms. There's always an exception but I'm just speaking about a general likelyhood. With fiber it's not uncommon to get sub 10ms latency even on a "slower" connection, which if you're a gamer you definitely will notice a difference in latency between a copper and glass (fiber) connection. Another upside to fiber is the ability to have symmetrical connection speeds. With cable and dsl your internet speeds will be asymmetrical meaning your download speed will be faster than your upload. Today most fiber providers have the lowest speed they offer starting at 100/100 Mbps. That is really good especially considering the upload speed.

My new roommates have Cox's "gigabit" plan and Ive never had a good or steady connection with it. My phone defaults to data because it says the gigabit connection is bad and refuses to connect to it.

Do you know if he’s using a router and modem provided by Cox’s or is he using his own? I just recently got 400mbps but all of my end devices were testing 100mbps. It turns out my router was only megabit and not gigabit. I have a video coming soon regarding my new router, so be sure to subscribe and hit the bell icon to be notified when it comes out! Thanks for watching!

That's why I want to want 1.5 Gbps, and ethernet to the computer. My entire life I heard that I don't need the speed for this and that, and every step of the way, I prefer the speed.

Actually, laing of fiber is cheaper than cable or DSLR now, in my city no ISP is offering them, even old telephone cables are being substitute by fiber even though the client isn't paying for internet just the fixed phone. Becides in brazil fiber is almost everywhere, I travelled to a small city by the sea with sand streets, no celltowers but it still had blazing fast fiber
