I prefer to give rather than receive, especially when it comes to gifts, because I'm truly terrible at faking enthusiasm for a lackluster gift.

+JayAntoinette There is a mode of receiving called (receiving for the sake of giving) meaning if i have a desire to give you a gift, and you don't take it because you prefer to give and not receive. That would be egoism in a sense. Now if you take the gift I want to give you and you enjoy it for the SAKE of giving me a chance of enjoying the pleasures of giving, then your inner taking becomes outer giving and we both get to enjoy theses altruistic pleasures together.

Survival of the species overrides survival of the fittest, thus our actions. I hate when some people think that evolutionary mechanisms are contradictory to our behaviour. They are not. If being selfish was more advantageous in the long run(let's say 5000 years), then we would be selfish, by definition. It's not as advantageous in the long run, thus we're not completely selfish.

I personally would come to the help of whoever is close and in need, what make me hesitate is the fact that it's seems totally strange to others the apparent no gain or profit nature of the deed. For example, in other countries the act of lend a hand to somebody who just felt down, it's seems as a common reaction, here in the states being a good samaritan could land you in legal troubles.

For some reason I can't grasp the idea of animosity or empathy. The only time I really help others is if it will help me in the long run, or I am being forced to, and will receive consequences for not. I am unaffected by helping or hurting others, including people I care about. Am I weird?

I believe in giving to those who need it. It often makes me feel good too, but sometimes it's hard to see when it really benefits anyone at all. For example, I feel like I help out everyday by putting the dishes away and cleaning the house a little when it gets dirty. But then I think of how this may actually be making things worse and causing me to have to do this even more because now the people who aren't picking up their own trash or doing their own dishes are more likely to not do it again because they know that I will do this anyway. Then I think of the longterm effects. The could actually hurt the people I am trying to help out because say, when my brother, who is really sloppy, starts living on his own, he will be so used to others picking up for himself, that a sudden change from people helping him to no help at all could actually cripple him a little in terms of staying tidy and organized. This doesn't just apply to picking up after others, it applies to most things in life. If you give everything someone could ever want for one time, then they are not prepared to work for themselves when they need to. So I get what you're saying about it making yo feel good to help others, but I think it does not always help to just give. You can give a man a fish and feed him for a day, or you can teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. I think the greatest gift is not handing people what they want, it is teaching them how to get it themselves and not need to be given that thing. The more often you need something right now and you get that thing, the more you will be dependent on it in the future.

I think that, more than what they say in the video, i like to help and give because If i where the one i help i would be happy with some help, and because helping could impossibilitate some suffering to happen, AND ( one more) It could bring more happines to the world( and the person).

My altruistic behaviors are more based on empathy than feeling good about having helped someone. I would like it if someone helped me in that situation, and that's enough reason for me to help them. It's interesting to think that we use our selfishness to our advantage to preform altruistic behaviors through empathy.

We are a pack animal and as such have instinctual tendencies to help other people, especially when we can consider them our pack. We have drive to want to help people that have not hurt us (or belong to a pack that has hurt us). Not having these instincts is a sign of a warped mind. A lone human is not a healthy creature or one with a realistic likelihood of survival in the wild. We are best together.
