Bodyshaming is horrible and the people who hide behind the "I'm just trying to shame them into a slimmer size"-mentality are the scum of the earth. On a happier note - I like your guys' approach on the whole drama on that video xx

+Victoria Daisy Not only are they the scum of the Earth, they are just flat-out incorrect. The absurd notion that what they are doing is in any way helpful is demonstrably untrue- they're just mean-spirited assholes and the consequences of their actions are more negative than positive. In conclusion: THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO.

***** Body shaming is indeed terrible, but I'd be careful about policing other people's bodies at all- even if it's in the name of "health." It's verging on the same sort of thing: "I'm telling people how to live their lives and why their body is bad.... but I have good intentions." It's different if it is your own child who you are encouraging to be healthy- but complete strangers, acquaintances, workmates, etc... maybe still not such a great idea to tell them how their body should or shouldn't be.

Not entirely sure it's justified calling body shamers the "scum of the earth", in my humble opinion, because every person who shames someone else does it for their own reasons. For example, it could be ignorance; I never shamed anybody (I'm tall AND obese, so that's a one-two punch right there to my overall health XD ), but even I didn't know about the studies these guys brought up until I saw this video. I do agree that body shaming is horrible, but insulting the human beings engaging in that behavior doesn't help, because it just pushes them away, making it that much harder for them to learn the truth about how terrible their behavior is. Being blunt, honest and straightforward with them changes them far more effectively than being mean to them. I know we get caught up in the passion of ourselves and others, but we need self-discipline as much as they need to have their views challenged. It's a dangerous tightrope of helping them without hurting them, but it's the best way IMHO.

I lost over 100 lbs myself. Body shaming never helped, I had to decide to do it myself. I remember I lost 70lbs the first time I tried, got body shamed(by strangers that didn't know I lost the weight) because I was still around 280 lbs and got discouraged, which led to depression... didn't see any point in working so hard if people would still call me fat, and gained it all back. When I finally had enough I just blocked everyone out and did what I had to do. I only have about 20-30 lbs to go before I'm finally at my goal. Body shaming does not work people.
@Loathomar
@Loathomar 9 жыл бұрын
+Cristian Reyes I agree that Body shaming does not work, but their is a question of where to draw the line. I feel "fat pride" is also a very unhealthy view as well. Calling a person "a fat pig" will not help and will far more likely have the effect it had on you, depression and weight gain, but on the other hand ignoring the health issue and acting like being fat is ok or even good seems like a very negative approach. I feel like if you are actively going to comment on someone weight, it should come from a place of concern and with a willingness to active help. Did you or do you feel that friends and family who express honest concern, not attacks, was or would have been helpful or harmful? Ei, "I fear your weight will cause serous health issue if something is not done, could I do anything to help you?" rather then "you're a fat pig".
@marinabreeze
@marinabreeze 9 жыл бұрын
+Loathomar I don't think you have to say either unless the person comes to you. If you're fat, you know you're fat. You have a mirror, you can see that you have to buy larger clothes or stores that cater to larger people. If it is affecting your health or mobility, you can feel that too. It's not up to anyone else to change someone's weight. They can do it on their own.

+AsapTHOUGHT Shaming worked on reducing smoking rates did it not? I wonder how a powerful addiction being publicly shamed caused its rates of use to go down, but doing the same for weight will not? Also *quite of few* psychological studies are absolute garbage due to small samples sizes and unreproduceable results. There was just a huge study on this ;) . As a bisexual male as well, I find it scary that you two put about a message about self censoring in comedy. If you believe in enlightenment ideals; self expression for all, and ability to choose what messages one will listen to, by default you must extend this ability to bigots as well. I do not fat shame, nor am I a bigot... but I will protect their right to be such with my life, because that is what the foundations of freedom lie upon. This is the message I took from your video, if it isn't what you intended I would appreciate you explaining a little more throughly. m.livescience.com/27262-psychology-studies-questioned.html

***** Specifically what was mentioned was stand up comedy first off. That *is* a freedom of speech issue. And yes, I am defending the right to be cruel and hateful. I'm not saying it's proper, but it is a right and should remain such or else we get into a large and generally murky territory of charging people with nonviolent and immaterial crimes. People shamed smokers quite a bit, I don't know how old you are but some of the ads against smoking and doing drugs the government put out were rude and downright falsities. Also people used to call smokers smelly. This is a subjective opinion, I don't even smoke cigarettes but once in a blue moon anymore and yet I enjoy the smell of one burning. So did my best friend whom never had smoked cigarettes. The smell of meat cooking disgusts some people, so does curry and chicharones. Should we now refer to the people that cook and eat these foods to be smelly? That is shaming no matter how you slice it. Calling someone smelly is not a compliment and it is most definitely non-scientific. Ads like this worked though, because no one wanted to be the smelly person with bad teeth. These *shaming* tactics worked and they worked well. Please tell me why specifically it will not work with people whom are overweight?

+Humanime Right, but how fat somebody is isn't a great way to measure health, at least health that can be changed. People can still appear thin but have fat in their internal organs, which is where having fat is most unhealthy, and some people just naturally have bigger body shapes, or have a condition which means they're fat.

What about skinny shaming though? It happens all the time but people seem to be more interested in fat shaming(maybe bc of the rise of obesity?). If you guys could make a video on skinny shaming I'd be so greatful. I want the facts and statistics like you had in the beginning of this video but for skinny people. Like how after being attacked they'd actually (on average) consume more calories. Does the opposite happen (on average) for us skinny people? If we get labeled anorexic or bulimic do we start engaging those acts? Many skinny people have a smaller breast size and get made fun of for it. Does this impact how we respond or change our living style? I want to know if other people are being given and told to eat unhealthy sugary foods to "fatten up" rather than healthy fattening foods. A video on this topic would be so educational and bring awareness. A lot of people don't realize this is just as much of a problem as fat shaming or don't even think this exists!

"Comedy is evolving and you're on the wrong side of history" is probably the scariest sentence I have heard all week. Art does not evolve, art is art. It may change, and the way people consume it may change aswell, but art can always take on any shape at time. Sure, you can be offended when someone makes a joke you don't like, and you have the right to express that, but you do not have the right to silence anyone who made a joke you did not like, and that is what is happening in out society today. People who make innocent jokes in private lose their entire carreers because an enormous hate mob of outrage goes on a rampaging witch hunt, fueled by hatred of those who dare express opinions they find personally offensive to them. The problem is not that people dislike certain types of humour, that's their perogative, the problem is that they are actively trying to censor it. It's not a comedian's job to change the world, it's his job to make you laugh by presenting you with truths and alternate viewpoints on issues that often seem absurd and outrageous, and you can do with those what you want, but even entertaining the notion that such people should be unable to say the things they say at all (which is obviously not what you are advocating here, but it is not all too far from it) is treading a dangerous path toward authoritarianism. People need to be offended, otherwise they'll forever exist in an echochamber.

fat shaming is counter productive.... how can someone be motivated to improve themselves when they don't love themselves in the first place. To be able to seek improvement you got to come to terms with yourself first. Yes! it's okay to feel discomfort at being fat, but not shame.... shame in itself is a destructive feeling that never amounts to anything, its greatly tied to your sense of being rather than with just one aspect of your body.... people who feel shame cope with it by feeling shitty, hiding and giving up, not by improving it

I agree that being a jerk doesn't help lose weight. However, if my comedy offends someone, who I wasn't attacking directly and on purpose, then that's really not my problem and I won't apologize for it. It doesn't make me a "bigot", "racist", or "homophobe" I just understand that it's a joke just as if anyone makes a joke about my life style.

+Katherine - Seranade how would you know if i am or not ? everyone has a right to there own opinion so no fuck you. when i say a little tuff love i mean some serious motivation, not fat shaming. fact is this generation is offended by everything.

Thank you for making this video. I've been on the bigger side for as long as I can remember. Right now I'm at the biggest I've ever been. Being made fun of for being fat throughout school and in my adult life never helped me (I also got it from my dad. He would make pig noises when I ate, did it a lot when I was pregnant with my son). Never made me want to go out and take care of myself. Only made me want to stay inside and hide from the world (also stuff my face with shitty food). People never realize what lasting effects this has on people. I'll always remember how I was tormented in grade school for being fat and didn't help I was poor on top of it. Yeah, I probably should get over it but this is something that will stick with you for a long time.

I was bullied as a chubby kid, now i'm jacked and tan. We're growing up in a society with spineless people. Harden up and deal with it. If you can't take criticism you may as well not leave your house in fear of being "offended".

Loving your vids as always guys. I was watching this show called Adam Ruins Everything where they cited their sources on screen during the show. I was wondering if you guys would be willing to do that too and also add a link to the papers (only if free access) for those who would love to read further into them.

Great video!! Sends out such a good message. I used to want to get more in shape and mainly just lose weight, but then I found Fitness Blender, a KZbin channel and website, and they've literally changed my life aha :P I focus more on health and how I'm feeling instead of how others are towards my body. Great video!!

Hey Asap Thoughts 😄 I've seen a lot of your videos, both asapthoughts and asapscience, and I've been wondering if you could do a video on Type 1 diabetes versus Type 2. I'm a type one diabetic and it seems like society has generalized both types into a behaviorally affected disease. Thanks for all the videos that actually make learning fun!
