I guess I'm more on the fence. On the one hand it doesn't really FEEL like Goosebumps, it feels like it's trying to be Riverdale by taking material that is to us as adults pretty silly and make it serious whereas Goosebumps has always been a blend of horror and comedy and the anthology format can work. The reason Just Beyond didn't work was because it's not as well-known as Goosebumps. But on the other hand I'm not adverse to this version either. There are some monsters from Goosebump that play well to being more serious like The Haunted Mask. The 90s show is perfection, an almost literal 1:1 adaptation of the source material and I think it would help us to remember that we're not the target audience for this. This is clearly aimed more towards teenagers in the same way the books and tv show were aimed for us as kids. I'm defintley more curious about the mystery and the conspiracy by the adults, how stuff like the camera and mask became cursed, and Biddle's relationship to Slappy than the main characters and yes, James is rather annoying but not entirely, there's enough of his personality to be tolerable.

I think they balance comedy and horror well. I also recognize that its not the anthology that we know, but I think that is okay since it never pretended to be that. Its well written, pretty funny, and has a good modern spin.

Episode 6 definitely made me feel less sorry about Harold Biddle's fiery fate. He was an idiot who easily fell for Slappy's lies about his friends. Even in death, Biddle is stupid enough to believe that the ones who showed him genuine kindness were actually bullying him. Biddle was obviously beyond help and his death was more his own fault than his former friends'.

So far it’s fairly decent. I was most disappointed with the cuckoo clock of doom as I felt it deviated too far from the concept of time and went in an entirely different direction than I expected. The cuckoo clock itself sort of became irrelevant after like the first 10 minutes of the episode. It was my favorite book of the series so I had high expectations for it.

I get what you mean, they’ve done the cuckoo clock dirty, made it feel more like Let’s Get Invisible, except the mirror would be able to make multiple copies of a person, or Monster Blood, granted I’ve never read the monster blood books or seen the episodes, but the goo the clones were made of looks like monster blood.

Yes! That was one of my disappointments. I love that story, and it's a shame how little we ended up getting with the concept. I get there's a core story they need to plough on with, but most of the episodes are also quite short , so I think they could have given it just a little bit more dedication

I went in with low expectations but I was really shocked how much I liked these first 5 episodes. The only cons is the teen romance drama, the CGI can be pretty bad at times, the twist reveal is pretty predictable, the haunted mask design is pretty boring and I don’t really care about the biddle mystery. The goosebumps stuff is so nicely executed like some of the stuff did unnerve me that it’s a lot darker, I like the comedy, I like these new interpretations of the goosebumps story like go eat worms for example I never really liked that episode but wow the 2023 version is pretty damn good, love Justin Long, the cast is fine, the haunted mask episode was easily the best episode but night of the living dummy will have a chance of beating that. So far it’s an 8/10 I’m really liking it and very curious how the last episode horrorland will work. At first when I heard it was a story focused show I was pretty bummed out it wouldn’t focus on the anthology version of the books but it’s pretty executed well like the horror land series is both anthology but story focused as well . Hoping the rest of the episodes are just as good. I doubt this new slappy will be just as good as the og tv version but with this darker tone who knows.

But I just saw the 1st episode and man im digging the twist on the old objects of goosebumps and how everything is mashed up. The new kids and there chemistry is amazing. There was only one scene when i was like “erm okay” and thats when he says to Isaiah (the black character) “its okay for you, you have it easy because you’re popular, im the only gay guy in the town” which is just a straight up lie! There’s multiple gay characters (you dont see much of them) also there are literally like 2 other black characters there age in the show so it kinda feels like they are trying to say the gay guy feels more out of place or outkast than literally the only black boy at high school 😂 which is kinda stupid to even bring into a tv series in the first place. Its not a competition 😂

Well for a series thats basically a retelling of A Nightmare on Elm Street, which I'm surprised that Wes Craven didn't sue them for copy right infringement, I say stick with the original series, movies and stick with Mr. Craven's masterpiece along with The People Under the Stairs. And of course Nightmare on Evergreen Ter. from The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror VI. Note: if there's one thing this show needs is make up effects by Screaming Mad George, not that he some effects in Elm Street 4.

Im really enjoying this. If youre making a new adaptation its better to do your own thing. The characters are fun, theres a couple of bits that could be done better (haunted mask transformation looked way worse than the initial smiling mask and hood combo) but otherwise new goosebumps for new age. Good stuff.

Practical effects were one of the things that made the original Goosebumps series great, it looked realistic enough to get you scared, but not too realistic to traumatize the children watching it. The CGI effects, however, take away the realistic side and make it look less scary. Anyone can recognize CG effects, but it takes real skill to pull off practical effects.

This was a good video, but I have one nitpick: Comparing the comparison of the 90's Goosebumps monsters vs. the 2023 monsters. I bring this up mainly because a lot of creative liberty in the 90's show deviated from the original books. Examples include some of the monster designs like Slappy or the evil camera. And comparing that to the 2023 monsters who may have taken the same creative freedom with their designs seems a bit unfair. Granted, 90's Slappy gave me nightmares as a kid, but I welcome any iteration of the character so long as they are accurate to his character.

I would’ve loved it if it stayed an anthology series. I don’t have Disney Plus, so I was seriously considering getting getting for Goosebumps until I heard more about it. I love Anthology series. You almost never see them now a days. A few years ago I saw an old interview with Rod Serling, where he talked about anthologies and why he prefers them. I can’t remember his exact words but they were perfect. I don’t mind them leaning more into horror but dark gritty remakes are everywhere so I don’t think that makes the new series stands out. I honestly feel like it would’ve been cool if they leaned into the nostalgia and camp factor. Making goosebumps more adult just feels like it ruins the spirit of the series. I might check it out after it’s finished airing that.

Obviously the second season will focus more on Harold’s redemption and freedom, yes he will find slappy but I think Harold will get his closure the second season and slappy will probably be in another kid’s hands, and I think it should be Isabella’s lil brother, Isabella deserves that emotional great character build up cuz I kinda like her the most…

When they do Goosebumps, its great. When they do teen drama, it distracts, its annoying and just not that fun. I think there is a certain camp that needs to be embraced with this show. I think this show felt like it added the Goosebumps element laat minute. I like the actors, but I think the whole thing could have been developed more. There were good ideas, like giving an internet troll the haunted mask, but it didn't go far enough. My opinion, it should have combined things. Have a bunch of standalone stories that happen concurrently, then connect for the last few episodes. Plus, use actual Horrorland. Not some metaphor.

Since the trailer ever got released, i got bad vibes from it, (IT USED GOOSEBUMPS FROM TRAVIS) The posters made it out to look great, but once we actually jumped into the show, it got ruined by "popular tik tok songs", which i only think were their just for it to be up with modern audience. I've heard a lot of people say "It couldn't be as good as the original show so why try"? The new series has a higher budget, able to show more violence and mature themes and more advanced CGI. They were perfectly capable of continuing the original show at a higher quality. The 90s show was hugely popular and still loved today. I would have agreed with you if he didn't mention the 'Just Beyond' show example. That was very much like Goosebumps so if the new generation didn't eat that up, there's no way a regular Goosebumps anthology would have worked. Especially if you're banking on the classic characters and the nostalgia factor for us. As much as it's hard to admit, classic Goosebumps is not where the current generation is at. I have a feeling they went the non-anthology route so that the viewers would have more of an emotional connection. It's funny because the guy in the video said he wasn't invested in the characters, but I think a younger audience has a much easier time connecting to characters in general.

@@JohnStanworth That's fair. I do think Creepshow and Dark Mirror are both marketed to an older audience though. Even with the swearing and adult themes, I think the Goosebumps show is still aiming at the 13+ demographic which doesn't seem to be interested in that version of storytelling atm sadly. This is just wishful thinking but I'm hoping that if this show is successful, they'll go the American Horror Story route and create a spin-off like they did with American Horror Stories lol. That way we can have the best of both worlds!

The Villains in the 2023 Goosebumps show are the only characters that are true to the original stories, and the Cursed camera and Slappy are so far the only story accurate villains, but The Haunted Mask however is only half true to its story's character form because its "Ordinary Mask" form looks like the face of one of characters from an episode of "The Haunting Hour", a show in which had not aired for very long.

This series is better than some of the movies they put out in the last couple years! I mean I am so satisfied with it not too gory for the kids interesting enough to keep adults occupied so it’s a family favorite we actually sit down together and watch the show!

What got me hooked was the amount of songs they put in Radiohead, sound garden, AIC etc, that’s what made me like it and plus it’s a genuinely good show Edit: all this is with the most recent episode.

Overall, i enjoyed Goosebumps 2023. However, my biggest problem with the series was the pacing towards the end of the season. It felt like the creators wanted to end the season on episode 8 and then have a 2nd season dedicated to Slappy's return and his final plan, but were told that they had the 2nd season would focus on new characters, so they were forced to cram several episodes worth of stories in 2 episodes. Maybe that's not actually what happened behind the scenes, but it sure feels like it when i watched it.

It's just okay. Not enough time is spent on the actual monsters and concepts though. Somebody wanted to do yet another spooky teen drama and they slapped the Goosebumps IP into the script.

I will be very honest, I know that I am offending a lot of people, but I do not like the television series from the 1990s. They are not really loyal to the books unlike what people claim. They completely redesigned Rocky, Slappy never had curly orange hair, and some parts of the books feel misrepresented. This series could have shined by being better than the 1990s by being much more faithful to the books. Also the fact that we have never gotten Night of the Living Dummy on screen really makes me sad. I have always wanted to see Mister Wood.

While the Books and the 90's series were aimed at tweens; This Show seems to be aimed at teens 15 years and up.

Never knew the old series produced that many episodes absolutely love them theres a certain aesthetic to the old tv series that in my honest opinion cant really be matched beaten or topped. Am looking forward to the new series though will watch tonight

Watching the show I was confused sometime, but after watching some of your video leading to the show, I like it eveb better. So I guess it's a good show for someone that never watched/read the original

I come from the future (one episode came out) and most of these complaints did not get resolved. Especially the color complaint, as Slappys hair is supposed to be a reddish orange but it’s so dark you can’t even tell. Another problem I have is that the first 3 episodes don’t feel fully realized. This is a bigger problem in the first 2, where the actual horror element doesn’t show up until the last 10 minutes and barley gets any focused on prior. Episode 3 didn’t have the problem of it being getting attention, but the idea could have been expended upon. But alas

Up to episode 9 now, and I’m a bit mixed. I am enjoying the show overall. Episodes 2,3 and 4 were definitely the standouts, giving us a spin on the classic stories we know and love while subverting our expectations for how they influence the greater plot. That being said, it feels like it’s starting to lose its energy a bit over the last few episodes. This original story is flawed but does succeed when it harnesses the brilliant foundation laid by RL Stine with his original books. I just hope they follow more in the vein of episodes 2-4 for the next episodes and next season, really leaning in the more serialised aspect of having a “monster of the week” type trope

The new show sometimes feel like a drama that was trying to clash with a soap opera which unnecessarily veers our focus from the friendship dynamics between half the principal adults, and the budding relationships between the teen heroes and heroines themselves.

I really appreciate this one piece of the franchise growing up a bit with its audience. I agree with the fact that the 90s show exists already to be watched and the books exist already to be read, if you want those go interact with them. I like the show being a series too kinda like the Horrorland book series being ultimately intertwined. Plus this show follows the same path as the book series’ Goosebumps series 2000 was by design “scarier” than the OGs because of criticism It feels pretty at home honestly

Go Eat Worms is an incredible in joke between my friends as I claim it’s one of my least favourite goosebumps stories (love hate relationship) so I was aghast when I found that Go Eat Worms was one of the stories getting adapted. That being said, if I had to pick the best version of Go Eat Worms, I never thought I’d be picking the version with an affair as a major plot point. Side note. I do like this show (not perfect at all) but my main complaint is the bland music especially when the original show and even the movie has such memorable music.

You forgot that the target audience for this series aren't kids but the kids who used to be. They are adults now and would be expecting a darker tone for their taste. I like the series as it had adjusted itself to new thriller-horror genre. Most kids will be clueless what Goosebumps nor would be interested to anyways.

All the twists and turns that make up Goosebumps is close to the true stories but the characters in question should be the same names and appearances to the characters from the original stories and they didn't do that; that is the only deviation from the stories themselves. Another slight deviation of the Worms from "Go Eat Worms", is that they are supposed to be more threatening like they were from the 1990's version of the same episode title not just simple gross out moments; in fact Those worms look more like those that were featured in "Stay Out Of The Basement" 90's episode.

I wish they would've added some more Goosebumps elements. Or even just end credits with Goosebumps theme. I wasn't a fan of the emo sad moments. But overall, it was a really good show. I genuinely liked the characters and the story was told fairly well. Would've like more spooky moments though. They definitely need to turn up the scare factor.

If it is a strict binary, good or bad ... I have to say "bad." The opening 5 to 10 minutes of the first episode were really strong ... then it just stumbled and staggered until the fifth episode (the last of the original episode dump). The fifth episode was much improved over what came before it, so it gave me some hope. Episode 6 was better than most of the early episodes, so there is still time to turn it around. But through 6 episodes, it isn't "good" overall, so that leaves me with "bad." So far. Let's hope for a strong finish.

I'm glad this show tries to be darker and focuses on an older audience than the movie. While I enjoyed the movie and appreciated all the fanservice, it was a complete comedy with no horror whatsoever which was annoying and felt like another case of modern Hollywood being too cowardly to scare children because of Facebook Karens. The Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark movie was exactly what I wanted the Goosebumps movie to be and I loved it. I'm enjoying this show so far.

This series by far is more unexpected than the 90's series, but I expected the classic characters + Goosebumps Most Wanted characters from the original books and their origin stories and yet, I see different people living in the houses of the classic goosebumps heroes and heroines, like the Caldwell house and the Boswell house; I do not understand why we are given characters we do not recognize in name or description, I was expecting the original Ghost Next Door Hannah, not some rando Kid who conveniently falls victim to Slappy's spirit who now possesses some English teacher that looks suspiciously like how Dr. Brewer was supposed to look like from "Stay Out Of The Basement"; heck I was also half expecting the show to be the continued adventures of (Jack Black) R.L. Stine. Why are all those goosebumps heroes and bully characters replaced by completely different characters? I do not mean the original cast of actors and actresses, just the characters of the individual Goosebumps stories.

The old goosebumps was a lot more freaky for me. Idk something about 90s anthology shows, felt more gritty and darker and low budget looking so it made it scarier. But also I just loved the way they directed it, the camera, the music, fashion, the voice overs sounded scary asf and just the era itself made it so good

Wow, wow, wow! You talking here like Goosebumps has never been this dark and it's always been more comedy. I know you are a fan, obviously, but Who's Your Mummy has people kept alive for centuries so they can be slowly eaten away for the big bads to stay immortal. They are kept in coffins, wrapped up, and the coffins are opened ONLY so they can be fed on and they literally beg for death every single day. You can not get darker then that. And to be honest, YES, the Goosebumps books have always been campy, but they are by no means a laugh fest. I like the new show because it feels like horror, where as the movie didn't. This is the perfect show to bring kids into horror because it feels like real deal horror and it never talks down to kids. So I am all for the show and its horror elements are much more on par with the books then the movies were.
