This is a vary fortuitous, I’m literally in the part collection stage of resorting my great great grandfathers Krag, I’ve actually found all the part’s except the top wood hand guard. I’m gonna do a video on it in the near future. Thankfully the only thing done to mine was a cut down stock and removed military sights.

Neat, i wish you the best of luck. I have 2 relic gunns from my father when he passed, and they are worth more to me than just about anything else in this world.

I bought a sporterized 30-40 Kraig. Got it for decent price, have no intention to restore it. Happy with it as is. Also- they didn’t do any weird stuff to it, so it is definitely shootable

Misha, that cocking piece is an original 1899 carbine part. That is why it looks so good. Love your vids. Jim.

Thanks, i was kind of wondering and no one around here knew what it was *shrug*.

Wow I got one Krag at the same condition I paid $120

I was able to get my money back out of this one + got the safety i needed too. So it was an all-round good thing.

Got a g29/40 k98k that has been sporterized. It's a decent job, but it's still tragic.

I feel you. Years ago, i had an otherwise nice G33/40 come in. Only real problem? It had been reblued....poorly. To this day, i still want a 33/40 carbine.

Every gun is worth restoring imo

Gotta disagree with you there. As with this one, the barrel is chopped, stock totally reworked, even the feedcut off is missing.

I love bluing even though it sucks for corrosion resistance.
@misha5670 Жыл бұрын
I know exactly what you mean. I do love a good park job, but therre's just something about late 19th century bluing. Also earlier Arisakas could have amazingly deep and smooth finishes.

@@misha5670 Doesn’t the sheen and color of the blued finish depend on a lot on how polished the metal is before being blued?
@markp4401 Жыл бұрын
@@misha5670 I like park too and sometimes I wish companies like Arsenal would forego painting over the park.
@misha5670 Жыл бұрын
@@markp4401 Yes, but that wasn't really worth wipping out for his comment. We knew what he was talking about. Polish of the metal matters a lot, as does the actual makeup of the steel. Tos a trace of nickle in there, and you might end up with some purple going on for example. Then you get into actual bluing methods and also duration of the whole process. Like anything else, a lot goes into it al. Which is part of the charm overall. I just love studying firearms.

This gun is very fun in Hunt: Showdown

If barrel is cut, I wouldn't attempt it. Be better off just to carbine it. I've got an uncut with original sight 1898 rifle that I need an uncut original stock for

Before I watch the whole video, my first answer is NO! Original stocks are high as well as most parts. Just buy an original. We looked into this back in the early 2000's and they were non-existent at all. Of course, un-altered Krags are over $1000 easy. Really great shooter though.

Yep, i am happy with the two of mine. I even have about 200 rds of ammo for them cashed away. I want to do a milsurp bolt action day eventually.

My short answer yes if its possible if not unfortunately its a pick and pull parts gun.
@davidkohler7454 Жыл бұрын
Those two scope holes were the first things I noticed after the cut down stock of course. Basically it's the first place to look for a modification on milsurp.old Fuddz liked to make scopes hunting rifles out of any cheap surplus back in the day. Back then they really weren't collectible, just a working rifle. I do hate seeing molested milsurp.

"Restoring" guns is dumb. You're just paying someone to part out a gun that is in nicer shape than yours. You're also spending more money than if you just bought a complete one to begin with. Not even going to touch the fact that parts may or may not fit.
@misha5670 Жыл бұрын
I would tend to agree with you. One nice thing about American stuff tthough is thatt at least the idea of GI parts came into use much earlier than with other nations. It was actually an outgrowth of the Civil War. Its not 100% for-sure, but the safety from the sportered Krag dropped right into my carbine for example. This is also why US military guns seldom have more than one (or early on 2) serial numbers. More just aren't needed when all parts are expected to interchange...thus "milspec". TL,DR; i love gun history.

You're common about you may not see certain things while you're in the gun store buying the gun and swooning over you didn't say swooning but I know what you mean but you didn't even see the g****** gun before you bought it
