1) ALWAYS have body armour 2) ALWAYS save after every mission 3) COLLECT every hidden package 4) Treat the IRON PATRIOT like your baby and only use it during the last few missions 5) If you can, keep your DISTANCE for every gunfight. 6) Do EVERY side quest! It’s incredible just how useful it is to have police bribes and extra health at every safe house!

7:17 This was a BIG problem that I had with this game and GTA Vice City. When shooting the enemies, they didn't stagger or show that they were losing health, so they would keep shooting you while literally being on fire until their HP went to 0%. So glad this changed in San Andreas.

I was 19 about to turn twenty when GTA 3 came out. I was amazed at how every single mission allowed you to approach the task however you wanted. I couldn't kill Salvatore leaving the nightclub without getting gunned down. Then I tried firing an rpg from the rooftop across the street. Success. This was the first game that really tossed you the keys and said have fun. Totally blew my mind. If course this trend would continue in subsequent GTA titles, this was Genesis for me.

Off topic, but something I found early on when I was a kid playing GTA 3 is at the very beginning of the game (once you complete the first mandatory missions), you can go and get a fire truck and just do the missions, putting out car fires. The cool aspect is that all cars from the different gangs and parts of the city will spawn. So, if you wanted a Yakuza car, or the Yardies hydrolic car, a cheetah, infernus, Cartel truck, Ice Cream truck etc etc etc, just do these missions till the vehicle appears, put out the fire and take the car. Its really awesome. I did something similar on GTA IV. GTA IV had those Brucie missions and there were 3 unique cavalcades in the game. One was black (with a silver/green/blue/red two tone paint) with black rims you got from the mob construction mission with Playboy X. You could fail the mission and go take it to one of your safehouses (you can also put the car on a safehouse parking spot before you even unlock it, which saves the car). Second was a Brucie car recovery email. It was a red cavalcade with black rims. You had to kill the enemies, then shoot the cavalcade where fire started to appear, mission would fail, then quickly jump in and use the phone cheat for health and armor to fix the vehicle. You gotta be quick. Then bam rinse and repeat till you have all the red cavalcades you wanted. Last one was a Brucie contact (forgot the guys name) and it was a teal cavalcade with black rims (my personal favorite) and do the same as the red one. I know that was super off topic, just a flood of memories came back and if anyone likes unique vehicles in GTA this was a way you could stock up. I am super excited to see what they do with GTA Deluxe edition and see if this first little trick works still on GTA III. I hope everyone is as excited as I am. So glad to see these games with newer graphics and brought back to life for console.

The difficulty in Gta 3 and some of the other older games would be drastically reduced if there was some sort of a cover system. As far as I am aware, gta 4 was the first gta game to introduce a cover system so Niko could duck behind cars and walls and shit and fire from cover. That alone made the game so much easier than it's predecessors, it was unbelievable. I don't think I ever failed a single mission in GTA 4 more than twice. Whereas in Vice City and 3 I failed some missions up to 25 times or more.
@Stinkyremy
@Stinkyremy 3 жыл бұрын
Actually VC had a cover system but it was under utilized because the AI is shit and you don't need it. I think the same with SA.
@Kaledrone
@Kaledrone 3 жыл бұрын
@@Stinkyremy Do you mean VCS? Because I have never played that. And no, Gta Vice City and San Andreas don't have any cover system like Gta 4 where you press a button and your character immediately takes cover behind the closest wall or car, and you can't shoot from cover like Gta 4 either. I have played both SA and VC on and off for like 10 years, I would have figured out if they did.
@Kaledrone

@@Kaledrone Well clearly you have not figured it out. Just because the cover system in those games are rudimentary compared to 4 and Vs does not mean they did not have a cover system. Search online for it if you never figured out how to use cover in VC and SA.

that's very well put: "it's worth it for the feeling of mastery" It's definitely what keeps me coming back to this game over and over again. The feeling you get when you climb onto the train tracks, jump off the rails onto the roof of a building and pick up the ak-47 that you knew was hidden on top of that roof, know the location of a bunch of hidden packages and get free weapons for picking all of them up by memory, walk in the weird low-poly alleyway in between two buildings to find the secret room full of weapons or even use weird strategies to complete missions you've done before, like jumping off the cliff to get the police bribes and easily escape the cops on the bank robbery or plant a bomb on the car your target is going to try to escape with, is to me a feeling pretty hard to come across in more modern game design but personally perhaps THE more enjoyable part of this game's experience.
@TwinSticksReviews
@TwinSticksReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely. It forces us to learn the map as there's no way point system. We know where the pickups are and we know routes through the city. Modern games don't do this, it's a shame.

8:44 That's why I ended up getting a mod that turns all gang hostility to 0 so I could go back to Portland without getting lit up by mafia guys with shotguns. It makes sense story-wise, but this meant if you blitzed through the story and wanted to go back to previous areas to do 100%, you'd find it stupidly difficult to get anything done. EDIT: Oops, you already touched on that, lmao. Glad to see I wasn't the only one who got bamboozled by this

III isn't my favorite GTA game (in fact, I didn't really enjoy it much until I got my hands on the PC version with its much superior mouse-oriented camera aiming, and it doesn't help that I played it AFTER VC and SA), but I absolutely respect the hell out of it. Everything from Vice City to Red Dead Redemption II have had to stand on the shoulders of GTA III. I also really love III's atmosphere, it feels just like a grimy East Coast city circa the very late '90s/very early '00s. I can't wait to return to OG Liberty City in the Definitive Edition! EDIT - ... welp that last bit aged poorly.

Great, fair review of one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. Give me this and GTA SA over GTA V, where most of the countryside isn't even used for any sustained period in the main storyline. Or where at times you just feel like an administrator to the story, watching long cutscenes and then following a predetermined route. Smaller maps like these feel bigger than GTA V.
@TwinSticksReviews

Thank you mate. I agree with you there, modern open world games need smaller more contained and more detailed maps. Also, the freedom in older GTA games is great, where we can tackle a mission in whatever way we want. Less hand holding is a good thing.

I just wish my memory was better because I had trouble learning the map layout. You touched on a great point when talking about the waypoint and minimap system in modern games. I would keep my eyes glued to the bottom-left corner and miss the actual game. I am now trying to force my eyes off of it.

For the hidden packages mechanic i think it should be some kind of thing that says one is in the area in some way cause having absolutely zero way to know where to even look discourages me from even trying to find them all . Like i think it would be cool to start off like that, no indication of where they are but you can still find them, and then also have way for you at least know when one is in your area but not exactly where so you still do have to look . Obviously not exactly how i said but something like that to at least make it feel possible

I was at the lunch table, and my friend who had an older brother was tellin me he was playing GTA3 before school, and got in a high speed chase with the cops, ran over a light pole, blocked the road and got away. This sounded crazy at the time like yeah right. So I had to see for myself. I went over to his house to play it, and everything he said you could do was true. The size of the map at the time seemed lifelike. I also found out what a hooker was that day. His brother kept saying "don't tell your parents".

Great video! Platinumed this on PS4 about 6 months ago. Followed a guide and did the emergency vehicle sections straight away, and the ambulance missions were still a nightmare even without gangs around. Not ashamed to admit I used the better vehicle handling cheat (and the pause exploit for the vigilante missions). Also agree the open world is great - remember seeing the skyline of the 2nd island off in the distance from the 3rd island and being blown away by what a fully realised world this was, especially for 2001. I learned this the hard that if you want to do the side missions Police/Medic/Firefighter/Taxi - YOU MUST DO THESE FIRST and I cannot stress how important this really is because if you do the storyline first then there is no way you can do these side missions because most gangs will hate Claude and will kill him. Here is my method of getting 100%, First Island: Side Missions All Reachable Packages Rampages Storyline All gangs on Portland are neutral towards Claude until you complete certain missions in the Storyline and only then the Triads and Diablos are hostile until you complete Sayonara Salvatore for Asuka. Second Island: Side Missions (note that only hostile gang is the Cartel in Fort Staunton area when first unlocked) All Reachable Packages Rampages Storyline Missions (The Yardies and the Cartel are hostile towards Claude once you complete the missions for the second Island) Only the Yakuza are friendly towards Claude on the second Island. Third Island: Same as above really. That's how I did the 100% when I last played the game in 2003. I moved onto Vice City when that came out in 2002 for the PS2 and didn't really bother with this game afterwards but I hope my method is helpful to someone that is struggling to get 100% :).

I recently felt like hitmarkers are more of a bandaid fix in order to give more feedback to the player when they're doing damage when they realize that the stun animations for the enemies just aren't noticeable enough. For multiplayer games it's fine since they can't make the animations too crazy and thus mess with the hitboxes but for single player games it always just looked lazy to me when they did that.

That's a good point. I've heard this sort of thing described as visual popcorn, along with damage numbers, which makes me cringe slightly. I guess it depends on the situation. If its an open world game where we're shooting enemies at range I'd like them, but for a linear game maybe not. I thought they worked well in Rage 2 where a red skull flashed on your cross hair when an enemy had been defeated.

ye it deals about 20 damage points per shot and also spews bullets 2-3 times faster than UZI or AK47. Luckily the NPC's have Stormtrooper-like accuracy if they are above 5 meters away from the player. This is showcased in the second mission on Stanten Island where you need to snipe a bunch of CIA standing on the skyscraper opposite to Kenji's casino. They do have M16's but they will never hit you with them. If you're quick you can still grab the weapon pickups from them - i think this is the earliest M16 you can get.

By now the disadvantages you mentioned about the controls are easy to get by cause of muscle memory and the abundance of visual media all over the internet. Anyway, your review really gives a lot of high end creators ones a run for their money. It's THAT good. @@TwinSticksReviews Great dude, you know no pressure but I think the videos about the older versions of the trilogy being out before the definition edition ones hit the shelf would make a cool comparison video, you really remind me of another KZbin named colourshed productions, he reviews older and new games, and he's also British. But for the amount of subscribers you have and for the quality of content you produce should be criminal. You know like in boxing there is a best pound for pound player, you're most likely the best pound for pound KZbinr, comparing your sub count to the quality of videos. It may be discouraging sometimes to see your other reviews fall short in the view count compared to the GTA, don't start doubting yourself, cause the quality of the vids are just as good, it's just many people are gravitated towards Rockstar more than any other company sadly. Your watch dog videos were excellent, sadly Ubisoft are trying so hard to be another GTA success, when they can be so much more. I for one like mayhem and doing things not so stealthy, but even that doesn't stop me from admiring and being flattered by watch dogs' approach to the modern world, as almost every single person stepping foot on this earth has a smartphone, and hacking is basically implemented in our lives for the better or the worse. This is REALLY getting long, all I want to say keep pushing man, everyone likes to watch those big named KZbinrs, there's no guarantee you'll ever be one, but at least you got the pleasure of doing what you love on a practically daily basis. I'm gonna keep searching through your videos, but I admit there's not a lot of things to view, you gotta step up your game bro 😅. It's like a drug, once you see one, you want more, you're definitely gonna grow and really quick. Btw before I go for good, which GTA was your favorite out of the trilogy and which GTA is your favorite GTA of all time? Yep. and as he said in this vid, it is best to do them very early on in portland. I know it might seem a bit strange to do them even if you are not going for 100% but actually taking the 20 or so mins to get them done actually saves you a massive amount of time later on through your play through because you have infinite sprint, you never have to slow down to catch a breath, something that can make you fail a mission or even get you killed as well as waste time. 0:38 Instead we would have a different set of games doing it, and instead would be saying "Without Street Slaughter, we wouldn't have these games!" We'd still have the third person open world genre, we'd just have different games in it and be fond of those instead. So it isn't all bad. Early on we had games like Terminator, Vette! and Hunter doing it in the early 90's. So we would still have the genre in some form. GTA 3 didn't do it first, it did it popular. It's funny, some of these immersive things that GTA 3 did....GTA 1 did, like the paramedics and fire engines. GTA 2 had hidden packages too. GTA 1 and 2 had trains. You could even drive them in GTA 1 and blow them up. As well as radio stations. GTA 1 and 2 had the same map thing, even lacking a minimap. Rockstar did GTA 2...so it wasn't entirely their first.

Haha Street Slaughter sounds like a great game. It's definitely on Steam early access somewhere. I think it was a combination of GTA 3 popularising the genre, but also adding in new features that felt like a natural evolution. They did a lot of firsts too, the first game to stream data from disc and the blend of driving, on foot and shooting gameplay.

This was a great video! I've really been enjoying my replay of this game. You only touched on this briefly but a big reason why the voice acting was so good is that they had a phenomenal voice cast. Michael Madsen, Michael Rappaport, Kyle McLachlan, Frank Vincent, Robert Loggia, Joe Pantoliano (Cypher from the matrix!)...Some of these people were pretty big stars, and a lot of them specialized in organized crime roles. This isn't to mention the more typical voice actors who, while they're not famous, certainly all did a great job! This was in 2001. I don't think I know of another video game that actually went out and sought such high pedigree actors for a video game. The GTA series was a top-down arcade-ish game before this. Can you imagine the pitch they gave all these actors? They got Kyle McLachlan to play the shady businessman in a video game in 2001! Utterly amazing and game-changing. I know this probably sounds like no big deal in the 2020s but I was honestly shocked when I looked at the book that came along with the game in 2001 and actually recognized some of the names.

The part about the Firefighter *🚒* , Ambulance *🚑* and Vigilante *🚓* resonated with me SO hard...I’m trying to clean up trophies on The Definitive Edition and got Firefighter checked off no problem, but even starting a new game with no payphone missions done, and as such, no chance for any gangs to be pissed off at you, and with the first responder vehicle of choice in the garage, ready to be used for its missions, Ambulance and Vigilante are a pain in the ass to complete for their trophies, which contribute to the larger “Furious First Responder” trophy for doing all 3 sets of those missions. I somehow miraculously got through 13(! 😭😡) Vigilante missions before I was blown up using that method. And I tried using the skip that got me to Staunton Island early for the Ambulance missions since the time limit is more forgiving there, but one of the gangs there was already hostile and shooting at me on sight, so I inevitably got blown up, AGAIN by them no matter how carefully I drive, because sometimes you HAVE to stop in an area where the game tells you to pick up a patient, and it gives ZERO FUCKS if your vehicle gets filled with holes and looks like Swiss cheese. It pisses me right the fuck off.

Also, though, to be fair and give TDE credit where it’s due, even though, yes, it is a basic Quality of Life thing, in that version you can pause and look at a full in game map. However, as to the main question, I unfortunately have to disagree. I think if the question was if it was still GOOD and not GREAT, my answer would be an unqualified yes; however, great? Nah. It’s just got too many aspects that look and feel antiquated by today's open world game standards.

It's best to do it on the first island. And when in doubt, use the in game map in the definitive edition to determine which patients are closer to you. Remember, with every patient rescued, it heals your ambulance up a little bit, no matter how much cosmetic damage it's taken. Knock the passenger door and the doors in the back off with the baseball bat so the patients can get in faster. Also, the handbrake is your best friend when you got to deal with sharp turns! I bought this game... but in 2006 I think, for the PS2. Since it's the PAL version, it would run at 50Hz which means the controller input would be worse than the American version. It definitely made driving even harder because when I jumped to PC I felt like driving was a piece of cake. Shooting was also painful because there was zero reaction time and you always needed a trick up your sleeve to win against the AI. I think its roughness makes the game more charming however. The idea was to make Liberty City look dangerous with the grey atmosphere and hostile gangs. The clunky controls just added to that because when cruising around or even with powerful weapons, I never felt safe unlike Vice City or SA.

I found GTA 3's hidden packages more reasonably positioned than VC. I could honestly find about 70-80 of the packages without any guide, it's not easy, but it was a reasonable challenge and most importantly it was fun. The inclusion of helicopters in VC means many packages were hidden on rooftops, which is stupid, because nobody's going to bother checking every rooftop; they should all be accessible on foot imo, otherwise it's not fun. Didn't bother with the collectables in VC, map just isn't as fun to search.
