I cannot be sure, but people are most likely pressed because of past incidents of queerbaiting as a costume to gain popularity, similar to wearing styles of other cultures and then being able to remove the costume and benefit from heterosexual privilege, white privilege etc. They want to make sure that they're actually being embraced, vs pandered to because it's popular right now

Luke brought up the very important question “is it fashion or are you just thin?” And I keep seeing these posts about how much “bolder” Adele is with her fashion now when she used to be more conservative with her wardrobe, and I can’t help but be frustrated. It’s not that she’s any bolder than she used to be, it’s that she is now a size that more brands will style. She’s not more more fashionable, she’s just thinner. She has more options. I’m glad Luke is pointing this out.
@jbtfp
@jbtfp 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, it it’s just sad that she could only start expressing herself through fashion once she was thinner? and if you were an outsider just looking at how her outfits progressed when her body changed it kinda reinforces the idea that you have to be skinny to be fashionable, but like you said, it’s not that she didn’t want to express herself through fashion when she was bigger, it was because she couldn’t.

Yeah Adele always looked fabulous, but her wardrobe didn’t vary much. She knew what she liked, and what looked good on her, and kept it to that. Now that her body is different, there are more things that look “good” on her, so we see variety. I still think it’s all very in-keeping with Adele’s 60s-esque style. Her hair and make up remain much the same, beautiful blow outs and 60s eye make up. I love it. I love her, I wish the world would just let her music be the conversation, not her body.

Harry shouldn't be required to label his sexuality to be allowed to wear feminine clothing. He actually doesn't owe us disclosure about his sexuality at all, which is weird and obsessive thing for so called "fans" of Harry who claim he's queer baiting to care about. If they truly supported lgbt+ people, they wouldn't force us into boxes (like labels, which are a choice) then get pissed if we don't feel comfortable with them. My issue with harry is less with him and more with the people who have made him out to be the pillar of gender deconstruction and inclusivity for men. When there have been so many openly queer men especially men of color doing it for so much longer. And people really act oblivious that his whole stylist is a nonbinary person who most likely was breaking gender norms and embracing clothing has no gender and is fluid, just not in the public spotlight. He isn't queerbaiting but unfortunately some brands are already out there capitalizing on his look to do just that.

Regardless of gender or sexuality, people should be allowed to wear what they want. If cis straight men wearing stereotypically feminine clothing is queer baiting then wouldn't the same work for cis straight women wearing stereotypically masculine clothing? Defining what one group can and cannot wear will automatically define what everyone else can wear. Just entertaining the idea of attaching gender and sexuality to clothing verges on toxic masculinity and the idea that if cis straight men wear anything out of the norm they are not real men. Wearing a skirt will not make a cis straight man gay or a woman, it's just clothing. Clothing is a form of self-expression, it does not define one's gender or sexuality. This argument makes me think of what Shawn Mendes has said about people speculating about his sexuality. Just because he has qualities that some think are feminine he has to deal with rumours about his sexuality.

The fact that people are saying that Harry is queerbaiting is so hypocritical to me. The LGBTQ+ community (which I'm part of) claims that clothes and fashion shouldn't be based on gender or sexual orientation but then they be hating when men like Harry (who doesn't label himself) wear "femenine" clothes. Like? If women can wear suits a man should be able to wear a dress, but simply because he isn't open ab his gender or sexuality people just assume he is straight and start saying he is "queerbaiting" AND even if he was indeed straight he should be able to wear those clothes. One thing that I agree with is that I don't think he should be the face of idk "Men wearing femenine clothing" bc a lot of men in the past (queer or not) already have wore these "groundbreaking" type of clothes, but the fact that he is highly praised for it or like some people say that he is "overhyped" isn't his fault, that's just some fans taking it on an extreme level or saying it as exaggerating compliments

Definitely. This is a bit of a random example but I was thinking this very same thing a few days ago when I saw someone say something along the lines of "he thinks he's such a big man and dresses like a queer" regarding Hasan Piker. He paints his nails and wears little pearl necklaces a lot, but other than that he dresses in a very stereotypically 'masculine' way - some people are so narrow minded in their ideas of clothing, gender and sexuality that an otherwise 'appropriately dressed' (in their eyes) straight cis man wearing nail polish and necklaces makes him 'look gay' and that that is inherently shameful. Those kind of people and their narrow view of the world are the ones who benefit from this bizarre policing of clothing. By accusing people of queer baiting for dressing how they want, you put them in a box based on a perception of them in the same way that people who say things like "eugh you wear nail polish, that's gay!".

i feel like its worth adding that while harry does receive praise for his fashion adventures (and i do think he should, too), it doesn't come without criticism and hatred - and im not talking about accusations of queerbaiting. when his vogue cover came out, the conservatives jumped on his neck. ben shapiro had a melt down. the people who are against "cross" dressing (almost exclusively used regarding men wearing trad femme clothing) hate him for it. meanwhile the ones who enjoy what he is doing, enjoy it. and the latter part of the public are majoritively the same people who also love people like lil nas x and billy porter's imagery. i doubt anyone who praises harry for looking like the grinch is going to hate on montero for being a pink cowboy. however, the industry does definitely prefer harry; mostly as many other commenters have mentioned because of the ambiguity associated with him and his whiteness. i still think harry deserves praise for the fluidity in his image - while he gets it easier than others, it would absolutely be easier for him to go with a plain black suit like most male celebrities. that doesn't mean that he should be categorised as the inventor or as someone who is necessarily ground breaking; there have been countless of artists doing the same before him, as there are those doing it with him right now. two things can be true at once. finally, i find the accusation of queerbaiting to both make no sense and be gross. QB relates to alluding that two same sex fictional characters are in love with each other, really knead that in, and draw in queer viewers by insinuating that they will get the representation they are starved for. however, they won't end up coming through with it, and in the end, makes both characters canonically straight. the most known examples of this includes sherlock holmes and john watson in the show "sherlock" and dean winchester and castiel in "supernatural." a person cannot queerbait. and the fact that people feel this way about him, leads me to believe they feel as if they have some sort of ownership of his sexuality and gender. harry is such a public figure, whose sexuality and relationships have been questioned ever since he first took stage. i can imagine that at least this one thing, should it be true, he would want to keep to himself.

@@lisettegarcia to some degree I can agree that queerbaiting can happen in real life via conscious manipulation but also... its not a great term to use in regards to irl people. Mainly for the reason that everyone is here to discuss. Harry Styles is a man who dresses in feminine clothing, but its not fair to say that he's queerbaiting because him exploring fashion and dressing how he wants should not immediately be seen as some sort of symbolic subtext or automatically queer. Actions in fiction differ greatly from actions in real life because in fiction, we have things like symbolism, subtext, and introspective context on the character that we can use to infer what certain things may mean, and when that character is displaying glaring LGBT subtext but still isn't confirmed to be in that group, then that is queerbaiting. Not to mention, development in fictional characters are often very deliberate, they are meant to mean something. But we don't have that introspection and we shouldnt have those expectations with real people, we just see Harry dressing up unconventionally, its not fair to him as an individual to make those same assumptions when we don't know him as intimately as we would know a character from a piece of fiction because he doesn't want us to know, which is perfectly within his right.

If a person is 100% straight and still uses non labels then that is problematic. I’m a bisexual guy who is still in the closet. I came out to two of my friends only in the past and one of them stopped talking to me. If I ever come out to my family, I’m sure I’m going to loose most of them. All this I bet a straight person won’t have to go through. They don’t have to go through discrimination not just from public but from from their families too. So if he says he doesn’t use labels then I would think he is not straight.

I mean the thing is, people often say gender expression is different then sexuality and gender and all those things don’t have to align. Which i personally as a queer person absolutely agree with. It doesn’t make sense to have that stance and then police things ppl wear and accuse them of queerbaiting. HOWEVER, I can say that the stakes and risk associated with a cis straight man (and even women, especially if they’re conventionally attractive and feminine) wearing clothes that break gender norms is very different the people who are visibly queer and trans doing so. It can endanger them. So I understand the frustration there but again. You have to remember historically that “cross dressing” literally been illegal. The issue of who can wear what is highly politicized so of course ppl will have strong reactions on both sides. And for that reason I understand why people try to gatekeep, even if it’s not right.

I am almost 6ft tall and a size 10- when I go into ANY haute couture store Anywhere- The Passiege de Gracia in Barcelona, Fifth Ave in Manhattan or the Champ de Lyseé in Paris- it doesn’t matter what store it it- they will never stock something in my size. I would be stunned if they had a euro size 40( us 8.) And it’s always been this way- unfortunately… I hope it will start to change, but realistically I don’t see it happening soon. I’ve seen plenty of writers lament the general available size range that high end stores keep in stock, but I have yet to see anything impact the reality of what one can actually purchase in-store.
