Hump shunting! In the 1950s several wagon marshalling yards were constructed with a large hump. Wagons were uncoupled and pushed slowly over the top of the hump. A controller in a observation tower would direct wagons into various sidings on the other side of the hump, depending on the final destination of the wagon. Previously, wagons were "loose shunted" which was pretty hazardous with men (shunters) running up and down the sidings switching points and putting hand brakes on to slow or stop wagons as required.

6:58 “Not to be loose or hump shunted” is basically a reminder to the veterans of the railway business, that the wagons are meant to stay in a rake/formation whilst being shunted as opposed to being pushed over a “hump” in a marshalling yard or down a hill individually, as there are no brakes to pin down, just air operated brakes. The practice of loose shunting (pushed down a hill individually and seperated by changing points) or hump shunting (same idea, but over a crest of a hill or a specifically built hump where no hill was available) became largely obsolete when “wagon load freight” was superseded by fixed rake freight formations and containerised trains. Older wagons had individual brakes that could be “pinned down”,so when loose of hump shunted they came to a gradual stop by themselves. Air brakes can’t do that.

Get some plastic Halloween candy holders, like a pumpkin or what ever pour cement in it and use a railroad tie for a stem and when set cut the plastic off and you have a cement pumpkin

There’s been some weight in scrap pulled out of that little stretch of river. From the bridge to where you are today it’s been nonstop pulling metal out of the river

Nigel How interesting you find so much history of the UK of thousands of years , here across the pond, only about maybe a thousand.. not including the revolutionary war... But not remotely the history of the UK. Gold, silver and the like in fields and streams.History here of native Americans, the Vikings, and also the nights templar's.. crack on mate, and find the history, I love it.

The round plate with 2 rubber bits each side is part of either buffer or draw gear (coupling hook) dampening. Some wagons used coil springs like what you found in the previous videos and soem used a stack of them steel plate/rubber disc sandwiches.

Because of the ammount of Rail related rubbish / metal you are finding is it a possibility that there has been some sort of Derailment / Accident on that bridge at some stage , before or after the Steel bridge was built or even earlier when a Wooden tressle bridge was in operation ( Just a guess ) ?????

Seems like most of what you get out of that area is all train debris and very heavy. Should bring a lot from the scrap man.

I've been meaning to ask, what exactly is a track explosive, and do you have to call them in?
@jbbumpkin
@jbbumpkin Жыл бұрын
Track explosives or detonators were used as a warning device for an obstruction on the railway line e.g. a broken down train. They were made of a soft metal that could be easily clipped to the top of the rail and had to be put at a set distance from the obstruction. Especially useful in inclement weather e.g. fog the driver of a rescuing locomotive would drive slowly and on hearing the detonators exploding would know how close they were to the obstruction. They could also be used at signals being automatically placed on the track by the signalling equipment when the signal was red. It would be removed when the signal was green.
