Stage 18 is probably the most surprising and strongest moment of the 2022 TdF for WvA. Overall easily the strongest this year of any rider.

I’ve been playing, coaching, and watching sports for 50 years. I rank Wout’s performance at TDF with the best I have seen in any sport. Impossible to compare directly to Messi or Steph Curry or those in any other sport, but for sheer dominance and the sense that the sport itself is being changed as you watch, this was up there. And this reel doesn’t even include his epic pull on stage 5 to essentially save Jonas. Only rider in the world who could pull Pogacar back by more than a minute in 30k. Without that, the whole race is different.
@gokaygs

It was an epic performance for all 3 weeks, the stage he dropped back to tow Roglic into the GC contention again was impressive too. He literally did more work than every other rider in TdF then came to stage 20 TT and smashed Ganna and Kung's times and a few days before that he had dropped Pogacar on the climb???? That is a level of endurance and versatility I had not seen before.

Arguably the most remarkable moment here is 0:43 - that is some superhuman reaction time, body awareness and bike handling. Obviously the CX reflexes taking over there. Many tour pros are NOT making it out of that situation unharmed and their tour would probably be over. Wout’s mistake was he shouldn’t have been in that position behind the car in the first place - but his incredible agility was effectively a get out of jail free card. Amazing.

Everyone keeps commenting that he's beatable because he was beaten many times on this tour. What you should be looking at is how many times he won in different areas. He won and kept the yellow jersey for two or three days. After that he won the green jersey and kept it the rest of the tour and was never in any danger of losing it. He would have had the white jersey if he was young enough. He flat out torched Pogacar, ran the wheels off of Quinn Simmons, won several stages and caused all manner of mayhem throughout, all the while helping get Vingegaard the yellow jersey. Overall he accomplished more than anyone else on the tour. The only thing he didn't do is win the tour but that wasn't his objective or his job. It would have been interesting to see if a healthy MvdP or Remco Evenepoel would have challenged him more. I've been watching the highlights of 2019 TdF, WvA first Tour and he was showing his abilities against more experienced riders.

@@Shantiante It's not about winning the race. It's about fortitude, courage and bravery. We all know who won. In this case it not just about winning. Though Wout is a definatly a winner. He is a time trialist. There are races within the race Here is why Wourt is the best. He is a fantastic sprinter. He won three stages and seconded in four. He won six tour staged beating Eddy Merkes, the legend of the tour who got 5. That makes Wout good rider. He acted as a superb domestique. Just in case you don't know, the domestique does all the donkey work. They fetch and carry food and so on. They also ride strategically to protect their team leader, from harm and aggression from other teams. They pace set also. Wout's ride out front, a hard position, in hills was sublime Sprinters traditionally do not domestique to such an extent and they rarely if ever ride out front in hills. There are specialist climbing domestiques for this. Wout hauled his team star up the hills faster than most mountain domestiques can. By doing this he smashed to opposition. Wout win the green jersey. He is also outside the tour noted for exceptional time trialling and sprinting. The Tour de France is a strange race. The winner usually wins because they are exceptional but there are other greater riders pushing them on in the team. The winner is often protected and cushioned for the win by guys like Wout.

@@toforgetisagem8797 I think you are confused a bit. Eddy Merckx won the TdF 5 times, but won 34 Tour stages. Wout van Aert now has won 9 Tour stages (many more to come). But no, he didn't 'beat Merckx'.
@toforgetisagem8797

@@decascador Ok, Thanks for your imput. I got the info from Rouleur. I quote "his subsequent solo victory came off the back of three second places in the first three days of the race ....he'd won the last two stages of 2021Tour as well giving him a record of 1-1-2-2-2-1 in his last 6 Tour stages. Even Eddy Merke never managed 6 top 2 finishes in a row. His best was 5. His best 5 were separated between 1974 - 1975. So I think you could well be right about confusion. The Tour is a tricky. Either way, Merck was amazing bearing in mind he had none of the modern equipment. Van Arte is at present a presence in cycling.

@OtterDude

Van Aert is pretty much the reason vingegard won. He creates all of the space and tempo for vingegard to break through. Van Aert isn’t as good of a climber as vingegard so he’ll never really win the full tour. His job is to sprint hard and tire competition and then let vingegard breakaway up the mountains. Basically van aert is the perfect teammate

what a load of bullsheite - Vingegaard won, because he was the best. Wout is a fantastic rider but the level of arrogance to suggest Vingegaard couldnt have done it without him is just not true. WvA helped an enormeous amount, no doubt, but Vingegaard did it himself.

wout is not the best climber in the world, vingegaard is, but wout is the most complete rider in the world, he wins time trials, sprints, classics while also finishing in the top 5 in mountain stages if he wants to, he weighs 78 kg, vingegaard weighs 20 kg less, it’s like the world champion deadlifter of 180 lbs can deadlift 4 times bodyweight, and the world champion deadlifter of 320lbs can deadlift 3,85 times bodyweight, that would be over 1200 lb, makes zero sense to be that good

An absolute beast of a rider - he can do almost anything. But he actually doesn't win as much as people think he does. He has a plethora of secondary placings and only a few actual wins. He only has one monument to his name, for instance. He will get more in his career of course. In short - to answer the question if he is unbeatable? No he is not - in fact, he loses a lot more than he wins.

You have to either be very ignorant or have a very dark sense of humour to ask if Wout van Aert is unbeatable. I can't think of any rider with more 2nd places to his name... Cycling simply isn't a sport where the best rider automatically wins. If you are the favourite, the other riders will take advantage and work together against you. That's the beauty of this sport.

@@zigzagnemesist5074 Hey, no need to be agressive mate, i completely agree: WvA does things no one else can. It's not so much his ability to TT, to sprint or to climb that makes him extraordinary, it's his ability to combine these disciplines. However, that means he is also always beatable. In the time of Armstrong, you could know that EPO and other metodologies were a thing. Anno 2022, I see still some gaps rergarding own blood doping in small scale (but probably not worth the hassle of the logistics and risks of being caught, see operation Aderlass). Probably training a bit more at height has the same effect. Next to that I don't know if there are any steroids or hormones (mainly meant for preparation, not in race) where the labs have diffucilties with finding them...but as far as I know the labs also don't disclose what they search for...so the teams/ridiers/doctors also don't know that (and each lab has it's own search methods, so having insiders in 1 lab is not enough)
