It's hard watching our best friends grow old. Monitor his weight, but if he is eating,drinking, peeing and pooping, just let him be. He loves you and his garden. That's all he needs and wants. My heart is with you both.

You’re a busy man and I can tell you enjoy having something to do or work on! But as someone who’s said a hard goodbye to a senior dog before, I suggest you slow down alongside him more often. Sherpa dedicated himself to accompanying you in adventures and I think it would be so nice for you to show him that you’re accompanying him in his retirement. Lay down next to him on the grass every now and then, hug him and give him pats, let go of the camera (or use a tripod) and just be with him. ❤ i’m sure it will mean a lot to him.

Jamie, like many others here, I have had, loved and lost a number of great pups over my 79 years. I, like you, have a large fenced in yard (2+ acres) with my home. My huskies and malamutes all had liver issues in their old age. My Vet believed in quality over quantity. When they reached 11 years old( which is quite old for these breeds) we stopped worrying about lab tests. We switched to "a what makes them happy" program. Fed good food, vitamins and supplements for mobility and daily slow leashed walks for consistent mobility exercise. My last Malamute lived to be 14 plus yrs old. One night she went to sleep and crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully and I am sure with joy. I know that I will see all of my dogs and cats one day. I have followed you and Sherpa for 3 years and love your content. You both have the perfect home now. Love and prayers from middle Tennessee.

Yes, he is getting older but, as long as he is eating, taking treats/meds and getting some exercise (even if it is in his garden or short road trips) than I wouldn't worry to much. If he continues to lose more weight or clearly is in more pain than you may need a Vet visit. He is enjoying his Golden Years and appreciates everything you do for him, including providing a beautiful garden to enjoy. My heart goes out to you and sweet Sherpa. I'm going through the exact same thing right now with my sweet boy, Biscuit, it's heart breaking. He's 14, diabetic, the last few months the weight has been declining, he's picky with his food. The veterinarian told me to just keep him comfortable, happy. I couldn't even schedule his annual check up, they told me he was end of life, a blow to the heart. I'm praying for you and Sherpa, you're in my heart and thoughts daily. ❤🙏🐾

It happened like this with all of mine. They got more and more picky about food-I eventually just fed them whatever they wanted (that was healthy) and they ate what they wanted. As we creatures get older and slow down it’s our biological destiny to eat less and do less to conserve our energy. You have set his life up so beautifully, Jamie, for him to enjoy whatever time he has left-may it be a very long time! My heart breaks for you as you try to figure out how to make his life perfect-we all try to do just that. You succeed better than most. We love you for it. It’s the course of life for us all.. we all get older as each day passes and old age ailments creep on us all 😅 Sherpa is a beautiful furbaby and your doing everything possible to keep him happy and comfortable .. trial and error buddy x he loves his big garden maybe play with him a bit more, throw treats for him etc. Google things to do with an older dog. Regarding his weight I’d ring the vet for advice to put your mind at rest.. Give him lots of cuddles and attention and let him do wat he enjoys xxx ❤

An old dog losing weight could be a sign of something underlying. My old dog started losing weight and was slowing down. But he was eating normally and acting normal, and all his lab work came back looking just fine. Then 3 days later he died from cancer. He had a tumor in his lung that ended up making his lung collapse and by the time we were able to get help, it was too late and i had to make the difficult decision to let him go. He was my whole world, and I still miss him every day.

I had a similar experience. By the time I requested an xray for her lack of eating, we found a large tumor in her abdomen and the ultrasound showed the liver and pancreas wrapped by it. She seemed fine for week and then suddenly went downhill fast. I had to help her go at the vet. I miss her everyday. But there was no warning until the end.

A few years ago, we had a border collie and she started to stop eating when she was old. She would look at her dish and sniff it but would walk away. We tried all sorts. Then we made some scrambled egg and she went nuts for it. Tried giving her a bit and she nearly swallowed it all in one. So started making more of it for her to make sure she was getting something, and that worked. She was diabetic so we always had to be careful what she ate. I can’t remember how her apatite came back, but I just remember we bought a lot of eggs for a few days!

I lost my 17 and 1/2 year old Chihuahua on 4/11 of this year. She began acting differently about a year prior. She lost her hearing and much of her vision. She developed dementia and would bite a bit when I tried to cut her nails. I remember noticing that she was losing weight. It looked significant but I hadn't noticed it before. Time to see her vet. I thought we would get an appetite stimulant and be on our way. It didn't work out that way. Turns out she had congestive heart failure with no symptoms except for increased respirations which appeared 2days prior to the vet appt. Jamie, may I suggest to you with great respect, let Sherpa call the shots now. He needs rest and may not want to go here and there. He obviously loves his garden, so give him all the time he wants to go there. Most importantly, love on him like crazy. You and he share a very special bond. A love like the one you and Sherpa enjoy only comes to us once in a lifetime. I'm going to be praying for you and your best friend.

Oh Jamie, I am not a vet just have been a dog owner twice for a total of 25 years. Ya know, I am going to compare Sherpa and older dogs to us people for now. The doctor told me this, is as people get older we do not eat as much. I noticed my mother eating similar to a bird 🎉Lol as she aged. Now I am 60, good health except arthritis and it has been very difficult on my legs. I don't eat even as much as I used to. These are age related. I could lose 20 lbs. My legs were better for that in the past. I promise you that not one of us would ever think Sherpa would be depressed. The happiness that that you are giving Sherpa by moving to your beautiful new home is sooo evident. Sherpie loves his garden and everything about his home. Like you Jamie, I purchased my vehicle because of my Snoopy. Think back all of the marvelous trips and beachfront homes 🏡. My jaw would drop and this was for Sherpa and BATDOG and you to Jamie. Maybe a visit from BATDOG would help. You couldn't have provided a happier environment for Sherpa. You are a wonderful dad and a wonderful human being.❤🐕🐾🐾👏

Jamie see the vet. That's a lot of weight. Bloodwork. Could be anything but it's definitely something. At his age it could be thyroid, diabetes, the bad C word, but the point is he cannot keep losing weight. The slowing down is probably a part of whatever is going on. I already told you in a different comment and don't know if you read it. But he is an old dig. Let him have his old age in his garden en home. I know not very exciting to vlog but I saw it with my dog. When she turned 16 she slept almost all her days until she passes a few mobth ago. She became 18. But the last 2 years she only wants her garden and her own home. She was very happy... sometimes she ate a lot and sometimes she could leave it for a week... but not changing the routine... so I think he is happy in his garden. And wants his last years being at ease in his own environment. That's what old dogs do. And yes he is walking like an old dog. If you aren't sure go to the vet. But I think he did the right thing by buying him his beautiful garden. He is happy... at home... ❤

When my Tex (Border Collie/Aussie) got be around 14, he really just wanted to be home. They know that physically they aren't as strong as they used to be, not as ready for surprises. He also started losing muscle mass. For two years I did everything I could to make him young again. It did not work. They get older, slow down, and they're happy if their world is a little smaller. At the end of the day you do whatever makes an old dog happy.

I agree with what you said about he just loves his garden above anything else, and why not, he's earned it. I have noticed that he really doesn't enjoy being with Key or Nook anymore because he just can't keep up the play and always looks worried in case they should bump into him. 1) Give him his old food for 3 nights to see if he eats all of that, then go back to the new food to see if he eats only half of it again. That will either confirm your thought, or rule it out. 2) You may be giving him too many treats during the day, so he has lost some appetite. 3) Is the weather hot? That can affect his appetite. 4) He may have lost some appetite because he is not as active as he used to be, which is normal. I have noticed in some recent videos that his back legs gave out from under him a bit, which reminds me of what happened to Phil, sadly. Talk to your vet about that.

Hi Jamie! I also have older dogs. One is a Shepsky and she's 12. There are days she will refuse to eat her breakfast and a not be enthusiastic about her dinner. Then the next day she's prancing around waiting for her food. I think as they age, like us, they become more finicky about their food. I have a 14 year old malamute cross husky an he loves just chilling in the garden like Sherpa an a half hour walk each day he has lost a little weight but nothing to be concearned about just less muscle cos of his s as age but gets a little stiff but just old age it comes to us all but I will say he’s very happy just doin his own thing and not messed about with and left to chill like the pensioner he is . Our lab had the same liver disease as sherpy does. It was rough. He stopped eating at times to the point we put baby food in a syringe and ground up his meds in it too. We lost him at 14 years old. He was born in our house and lived a great life with lots of love. It's never easy when they start to get older. Many blessings to you both.

OMG!! Thanks for the morning laugh . I said the same thing to my hubby once about our Giant Alaskan Mal, Chloee Bell. We had a mushroom ring after a couple wet summers. My heart and prayers go out to you and Sherpa. I know it is hard to watch them when hurting. My Bell went through a few of the same things as she got older. She pasted away peacefully, will be 3 years this coming November 4 th. She was 14 1/2. Her arthritis and hip dysplasia. slowly got worst fast over her last couple years of life with us. I as well did everything I could to keep my fur baby as happy, healthy, and loved to the moon and back. Just as you are doing with Sherpa. Our love and Time spent doing our routine visits ,walks, beach days, walks in the bush, lazy I'm hurting days at home in her yard and home always with someone. Check ups and meds etc. You know you are loved by Sherpa and we all know he is loved unconditionally by you and all your followers.

I didn't notice that Sherpy have lost weight. I did see that for a moment he was walking a little strangely through the garden. Perhaps he has some discomfort in his hip. It is true that one would like to be able to talk to them and ask them what is happening to them. But they communicate and make themselves understood in their own way. Sherpa is at such an advanced age that he just wants to probably enjoy the simple stuff. What has been concerning me for a while now is that he doesn't seem to talk at all. He's an actual regular dog quiet dog, which is really weird. But also, between his liver arthritis his tooth, which I think healed, you said I really think you should just make life simple and enjoy your time with him. He has actually outlived the average age of a malamaute.

If it’s age and arthritis, you may have to add a few more supports: Cartrophen, Omega 3’s, collagen, CBD (if legal. I’m Canadian.), glucosamine, some rehab exercises like Sit /Stand. I would also suggest an animal chiro. My oldster, who has mega arthritis and hip dysplasia, gets all of this. The chiropractics works wonders.

My Husky is 14. She definitely has some back hip problems and some days are better than others. Sherpa still gets around well, even though he might have a different looking gait than he had when he was younger. As a 70 year old lady, I can tell you that as we age, the way we walk does change but that doesn't mean we are not still enjoying our lives. Sherpa seems happy to potter around his garden and we can all see he loves you as much as you love him. Much love your way. ❤❤

Jamie, you are doing a beautiful job taking care of our sweet Sherpa! Let him enjoy his garden, take leisurely walks to keep his joints lubricant. In the mornings and evenings, I used a heating pad on a low setting (place a towel in between) for about 5 minutes. After that, I would give her a massage focusing on the back legs, which showed signs of stiffness that I see in Sherpa. The heat and massage, along with a once a week heated pool therapy and acupuncture. Cold weather and a damp ground or cold concrete are not good. Take care and try not to worry too much.

We all love Sherpa and we know the great lengths you go to to make him happy and as healthy as possible. You did change his diet and he has been on different medications. Put your mind at ease and talk to his vet about your concerns. It's hard to be at ease when you're constantly worrying. And don't forget that he can sense when you worry.

The absolute love of my life was named Zeus ( Akita) I lost him to cancer at eight..its been seven years . I have had the joy of many dogs and I wouldn't change that for anything. I would go to the vets and let his back get checked out. I know from myself that if you are in pain, you have less appetite cause digestion takes energy. Could explain his "sadness" too. If you need to, set up a GoFundMe. No need for shame about that! It takes a village... you know :)) It is hard, reading their minds and guessing and trying to decide whats best for them. My boy got 11 this week and promptly strained his ankle on a normal walk 😅. Sweet lil grandpas 😊 Much love to you two!

Jamie, I’m so sorry, yes, Sherpa is definitely struggling. It’s like he loses control of his back legs and sways, like it’s neurological. I believe it’s his liver, especially with his weight loss. 😢 I’m feeling for you both Jamie. Hold on in there. We know you won’t let him suffer sweet man. You are the best Dad Jamie. Don't ever think otherwise. Sherpa is happy. And he does love his home - where he can be on his grass and snooze and know you are there. He's OK, he's just older. He's still just as cool as when he was a pup.....kinda like his Dad.
