"The Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS) routing protocol is one of the finest ever developed and deployed. Whether it is service provider, data center or enterprise environment, IS-IS has a splendid track record. And yet, even seasoned network admins have a ""yuck"" reaction when first exposed to IS-IS because ""it is so different"".
Appearances are deceptive, though! IS-IS is a lean, efficient and easy-to-understand protocol. All it takes to navigate it is just a few minutes spent on explaining its specific terminology and clarifying a few key principles carried over from OSI networking.
