Is ISIL gaining a foothold in southern Africa? | Inside Story

Mozambique has a seen a rise in attacks across its northern region in recent months.
Dozens of people were killed when ISIL-linked fighters raided a hotel in the northern town of Palma last month.
And now, it's emerged that 12 of the victims - possibly foreigners - were beheaded during that siege.
The attack prompted southern African leaders to hold emergency talks and come up with a response to the growing crisis.
But is a regional intervention the answer?
And could it fend off the threat from ISIL?

America caused a huge mess in Middle East, led to the rise of radical Islam extremists, which in turn creates a big headache for both the region as well as nearby ones (Europe, Africa). Anglo countries (US, UK, Australia, NZ, Canada) mostly live on isolated areas far far away. They have NO incentives to be afraid of the mess far from home; so NO restraints in their wrongdoings.

Constantly this whining, but it is clear who decides for Islam has to do with such trouble sooner or later. Unfortunately, Islam today no longer only means "faith, humility, willingness to help" - rather, Islam only means "anger, murder and manslaughter". If bad things happen anywhere in the world today then either the USA has something to do with it or Islam is involved - that's a shame. I hope this will change again soon because the Islam was once not bad and I had a deep respect for the people.

I'm going to be fully honest here: When the Carnation Revolution happened, the revolutionaries in Mozambique could have very well reviewed their priorities, since democracy was restored in Portugal, and probably Mozambique would be today an autonomous region just like Madeira and the Azores and the people in Mozambique would be way more prosperous and happier than they are right now. You got your independence now, is it really worth it? (This is just my opinion, by the way)

First of all ISIS still has strongholds in Syria, yes it was mostly defeated in Iraq and the "yanks" didn't defeat anything. It was the Iraqi government and its own armed forces who did all the work. Yes several other countries including the US, Britain, France helped logistically, strategically etc. But all the credit goes to the Iraqis. I think its time you expanded your horizons, its not all about the US.
