Why do people say you shouldn't mix electricity with water? What happens if you do? Let’s find out :) In this video we're experimenting with chemical experiments! In this video we dive into what happens when pool chlorine and Dot 3 brake fluid get mixed together, then talk about the science behind why. We’re taking pool shock chlorine and brake fluid to show you the results of our chemical experiment. What do you think will happen when we mix brake fluid and chlorine? How much heat will it create? Will we see a chemical explosion? Is it safe to mix brake fluid and chlorine? Follow King of Random and Grant Thompson to find out the results of our chlorine experiment!
This chemical project is also great for those wanting to know the properties of chlorine and brake fluid mixed: chlorine and brake fluid recipe, chlorine trifluoride, ammonia and bleach, chemicals, chlorine and brake fluid ratio, mixing ammonia and bleach, brake fluid chlorine, homemade bomb, explosive chemicals, brake fluid, DIY flamethrower, chlorine, dot 3 brake fluid, chlorine pebbles, flames, and much more.
If you’re looking to try something new or for an activity such as: DIY chemical project, chlorine basics, chemistry experiments, homemade science, cool science experiments, fun weekend project, or just a fun project with the family, watch the video to learn more.

Caution for all those wanting to try this out. Make sure your containers are completely clean and dry. The reaction timing can vary greatly if other contaminants or solvents are present. In my experimentation with this (a couple decades ago), it seems that less is more. We were using Gatorade bottles and sealing them and throwing them. A second person poured the brake fluid so the first could cap it quickly, give it a quick shake and throw. The 20oz bottles went as expected, landing on the ground and then popping and burning. The 32oz bottles popped mid-air, raining down the burning clumps much like an artillery White Phosphorus Felt Wedge. (Search KZbin for videos of the felt wedge WP.)

You should do a comparison of chemical firestarters for survival kits, like the glycerin and potassium permanganate. See which one burns hotter and better with smaller concentrations and if they can serve other purposes like purifying drinking water or what not. Like so he can see if you would like to see that plus any other cool methods to start a survival fire using chemicals.

My hypothesis: Since you need oxygen to make a flame I think that the reaction happen faster in open air because its more oxygen in open air than it's in a glass or bottle. So theoretical if you do the experiment in a closed bottle filled with Co2 the reaction won't happen. Test this in a video

Chris Jensen Chlorine is an oxidizer, so it would ignite no matter how little oxygen is in the bottle.
@DSzaks
@DSzaks 6 жыл бұрын
According to the explanation in the video the Chlorine is the oxidizer in the chemical reaction but is not actually what is burning. The reaction between the Chlorine and the Ethylene Glycol is exothermic but is not actually what burns. The flame occurs when the heat build-up in the mixture reaches a point that causes the remaining break fluid and/or the chemicals produced by the reaction to vaporize. This heated vapor then reacts again with the oxygen in the air to produce the flame. As such the oxygen content of the air would be a factor in the ignition but only after the heat of vaporization was reached in the original mixture. So I don't think the oxygen was the reason for the time difference. I would posit that it is possible the stone block the open mixture was placed on was able to store more heat than the plastic or glass containers and thus conserve energy to produce a quicker heat increase. It could also have to do with the way Grant mixed the mixture on the block with his finger which may have produced a more even mixture than the swirl mixing in the containers resulting in more connecting reactions and thus a greater energy build-up.

Chris Jensen So if you give it little bit of liquid oxygen it will go BAM!
@hrrrpenny8681
@hrrrpenny8681 6 жыл бұрын
The problem with this hypothesis is that it is uninformed of organic chemistry. The gas that is ignited is the aldehydes and other products from the chemical breakdown of the polyethylene glycol. These reactions are sped up through the addition of high energy light, such as UV from the sun. If you were to look at the open-air reaction, you will see that it was placed in some dappled light shining through the leaves above it. This was the main contributor as to why the reaction was faster. Not to say it didn't have more oxygen, or a greater surface area, or that the brick was warmer, just that these factors wouldn't increase the reaction time so significantly.
@matthewmccurry1
@matthewmccurry1 6 жыл бұрын
This reaction makes Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, and Ethlyene. HrrrPenny is correct, these are what ignite. The reaction WILL happen, as it is independent from oxygen, but could burst the container, and then likely ignite. The flame is not the reaction, but the result of the products of the reaction.

@@davidesfandiary5935 uh... bro, the chlorine gives off oxygen during the reaction to feed the fire. It can and will go exo in a sealed container. Enough to make a decent explosion for sure and it would definitely do more than just blow the cap off. That's why chemical fires are sometimes left to just burn themselves out. You can't suffocate it with foam or anything. It'll just keep burning under it because it creates its own oxygen and feeds the fire, like a completely self contained "living" fire.

What if it's a glass bottle that is laid on it's side, sliding across would take less force than lifting. Could also try the plastic bottle somehow with holes at the bottom and cap on the top to see if the pressure could lift...? Oh the possibilities.

It seems to me that the reaction times may be different due to the difference in ratios of the two chemicals. He did not use measured amounts and the one he did on the brick had much less brake fluid which may be why it reacted quicker. Just a thought.
@Drakarus
@Drakarus Жыл бұрын
Actually, it has to do with the amount of available oxygen. The ignition (should) be faster with more available oxygen. However, it also has to do with the amount of brake fluid to chlorine ratio.

The red color is from calcium. If you grind the granules to a fine powder, you might get a faster reaction time. Potassium permagnate, or any strong oxidizer, also works pretty well.

Hello! If you mix Kalium Permagnat (sorry I don't know exact name of it, its purple powder that colors the water red and is used for cleaning wounds) with brake oil - the liquid used in this video you will cause a HUGE explosion that can melt SOLID ROCKS. But be careful - explosion is almost instant and you will also need sunglasses because of a blinding light. And I am sorry for my bad English.

When you put it more out in the open, I honestly wasn't surprised that the reaction didn't take as long. After all, earlier in the video, you said it was a simple combustion reaction. And what do all combustion reactions need? Oxygen. So maybe putting it out in the open allowed more oxygen for the reaction to take place, therefore increasing the speed of the reaction?
@jjim07
@jjim07 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was confused when he said that too. Oxygen is the meat and potatoes of any combustion reaction.

Not sure if you can get concentrated liquid chlorine, but there was a time when we made the no-light molotov cocktails where we had the brake fluid in one glass bottle and the brake fluid in another and the two bottles capped and tapped to each other. You could then throw it to break together and within a half minute or less the mixed items would ignite. We even used a sling to shoot it further.
