Shot one at a cooler full of water with one at about 20 yards and it did expand but partially. Keep in mind a cooler is 2 thin layers of hard plastic and a thick layer of soft grainy foam. So I mean a piece of plastic could have been in the way

Critical defense is extremely consistent against the real world medias which are never consistent. But it is not a deep penetrator at the loaded velocities. They need a hot +p version of the 115 Ftx

Nice test, and verifies what I noticed about the XTP when I first started testing bullets; tough and requires some serious velocity to fully expand. Always liked them for hunting, or in faster cartridges for defense (327 Federal, 357 Sig, 357 Mag), and accuracy is among the best I've ever seen in jacketed handgun bullets. An exception to needing a lot of speed to achieve good expansion is the 90 grain XTP...one of the few HPs for the 380 ACP that will expand and still get good penetration.

I love the 3" tests. A) It's what size is most common on CC pistols. B) It shows what we get down range on longer barrels/PCCs

The CD wins in a 3 inch barrel. After the FBI had the Miami Disaster, they wanted bullets with more penetration. One perp took a 9mm JHP hit in the right arm that then went in the chest. It expanded and stopped 1 inch from the heart. So, they decided they wanted 1.5x expansion with deep penetration. If that perp took the same hit with the XTP from the 3 inch barrel you just tested it might have stopped him.

Great test Mr TNT but I could have already predicted what was going to happen. The XTP has a smaller hollow point cavity and a harder tougher jacket. They generally don't expand unless they're pushed to their maximum velocity and even then it's so so.

They are a great all around choice. And they really shine if you live in an area where it's cold and people wear heavy clothes.. clothing makes hollowpoints choke. That red tip completely prevents that.

@@northernninety7 Yes I am. Considering my carry pistol is a Smith and Wesson M&P Shield 9mm with an aftermarket 3.68 inch barrel that's a little longer than the stock 3.1 inch. I want my carry rounds to perform consistently in every situation. If the rounds don't stop in the first block of gel during the heavy clothing test, that is unacceptable to me. And the XTP did it multiple times. Where as, the Critical Defense stopped at pretty much the same penetration distance. I'll continue to use the Critical Defense. Until something else proves to me to be a superior round. Only thing I might change is to move up to 124gr. And see how that performs.

It's winter...well getting close! I would love to see some 380 and 9mm ammo tested using a heavy winter coat followed by a piece of flannel and a piece of cotton before hitting the gel block. In many states people wear some darn heavy coats for warmth.

In Tools' previous fabric tests, 380 HPs failed to expand reliably. Heavier fabric would only make things worse. For the 380 in winter, the only reliable choice would be a 'solid', either a flat-point FMJ or Underwood Xtreme Penetrator or Defender.

lucky gunner did some pretty comprehensive gel testing several years ago and the critical defense did well in it too. they are available and reasonably priced usually.

My new Glock 19 jammed 3x on the first box of shells I ran through it. Then the trigger wouldn't reset by itself so I sent it back to Glock after just one time out. Since I got it back it's never given me a problem but I still don't think the jamming had anything to do with the trigger reset they fixed. I'm at about 400 rounds without a problem so far but I have that doubt in the back of my mind about it and it's supposed to be my new daily carry.

Hornady critical defense is a terrific round that really dumps its energy and expands consistently. It has just enough penetration to get the job done without going through the walls. These rounds perform flawlessly in every caliber, even .25acp.

Good video , but the XTP is designed for moderate expansion and deep penetration, it needs 1100 fps or more to expand. Plus P 124s out of a 4" barrel are perfect . Good deer killer too

XTP is a good round for 380, because it splits the difference between expansion and penetration. For 9mm, I have CD, but prefer HST.

I think the critical defense did what it is designed to do, penetrate enough and expand consistently! If you want more performance out of that round probably a longer barrel would only improve its performance! As well with the American Gunner! Which comes in a 124gr+P variant! Would have to consider that as a summer carry round when a heavy clothing barrier isn't an issue! Would be nice if that critical defense came in a HOT 124gr+P option! Appreciate the info! I have both of those rounds! have a good one! 👍

The critical defense line was made for sub compact pistols and designed to have less recoil. If you want 124 gr+p FTX bullet go look for critical duty they also bring the benefit of being barrier blind.

I’ve shot no telling how many XTP’s in my pistols and muzzle loader and I have never seen one that did not expand. That one you shot Tools might be the one in a million but I’ve always had expansions on the ones I found now. Most of the time it will be lodged just under the skin on the opposite side from where I shot the deer. Great video Tools I’ll holler soon GOD BLESS

I take the constant deep penetration and smaller, sometimes I guess not opening up at all of the xtp over the critical defense. I've shot them enough to confidently say that well over 90% of the xtp open up. They may not open up as much but that's why they penetrate so deeply everytime. You can have big wound channels or deep penetration from 9mm but you can't have both. I think it's a good round and you for sure don't have to worry about going through layers of clothing or something like that. You are definitely going deep enough to hit something important and usually you get a nice wound channel to go along with it.

I like the Hornady Critical Defense and Critical Duty rounds. They just work. Thanks for testing these rounds for us Tools, it's good to know which rounds work. Most of us don't have the ability to test these rounds like you do so this information is very useful. I would hate to buy and carry defense rounds that don't do the job if God forbid I ever have to defend myself against an attacker. The testing you do on this channel may save someone's life someday.

I asked Hornady about the XTP and if they had any FBI test data on it. Specifically, how it performed in a gel test with heavy clothing. Hornady's response was, if I was concerned about the XTP getting clogged in a clothing barrier, I should use their Critical Defense / Critical Duty ammo. To me, Hornady isn't showing any confidence in the XTP, under those circumstances.

Could very much be the case, but then again, it wasn’t designed for that whereas other projectiles are. I will say, that the XTP and the XTP Mag are among the most effective projectiles I’ve ever used for hunting medium to large sized game.

I'm with you. Must expand 100% of the time thru the clothing barrier. 12-18 on penetration. Consistency on velocity. And at least 50% expansion over starting diameter.

I agree- 100% is all that's acceptable. But testing more rounds gives more data; I'd love to see some reliability-type testing, where you compare full mag of each round, to get % of rounds that fail. I know it'd be an expensive test, but very appreciated!

The Critical Defense is made specifically for small carry guns like what a citizen may conceal. Critical Duty is designed for barrier performance. It needs a longer barrel to do what it is supposed to do.

More proof that us citizens DO need "High-Capacity" magazines. In reality, the only "high-capacity" magazine I know of is the one used to feed a Vulcan Air Defense System. I think it holds 2100 rds of 20mm, and fires between 1000-3000 rds per minute. Perfect for ducks and geese.

Very good test sir. I’ve had decent results from the xtp bullets in a couple calibers but I load them up pretty warm. That ftx seems to always perform pretty well. I have some for .45 colt that are just nasty. Lol. Great test. I would definitely go with the ftx out of the two. 👍🇺🇸

I think this shows why hornady came up with the critical defense. I do think (especially from handgun hunting) that XTPs need more velocity. Two holes drain better than one. But that said I use for EDC critical defense as they are less likely to clog on entry and overpenatration for 2 legged social work is a bad thing. That being said 4 legs XTP, 2 legs Critical defense. I really appreciate this video.my reloaded xtp in 380,9.mm ,38 special were failures.my xtp in 44 special, 44 mag, 45 acp,, 45 super were equal awesome expansion.another equally devastating bullets is serria jacketed hollow cavity.both devistating on deer.just bought two Taurus 605 revolvers. one in2 in and one in3 in barrels. can't weight to work up test loads for them.

Thanks for another fine round of Jelly Time testing. I like Hornady's CD FTX loads, especially their 357 Magnum as a snub load that gets decent expansion and penetration from short barrels, and isn't as punishing as full power loads from small lightweight Magnum J frames.

I agree with you if the first round does not expanded and penetrate at-least 12 inches that it’s a fail. I love your test and videos. My personal opinion the cloth will tell the true results. Most everything can expand in bare gel. I think the cloth weeds out the weak so to speak lol. Also yesterday I seen that Winchester came out with a new box of ammo. It’s black and red. I think it might be a updated version of the Winchester white box. I seen at my located academy sports store here in Knoxville, TN. I’ll see if I can find more and send you a box to test out.

XTPs are easy to get and fairly cheap as reloading components. FTX is only available in the 140gr weight for 38/357. I don't load 9mm. XTPs have a reputation for not expanding much if at all. If you're into loading, the XTPs are less than twice the cost of lead (assuming you're not a caster as well). They are actually priced the same as pre-Covid times. They might be good small game hunting bullets or even for deer since they do penetrate more. For the street, Critical Defense is a pretty good line.

I think the XTP is more suitable as a hunting round rather than a self defense round. Other gel tests from other guntubers had similar results to this. XTPs tend over penetrate for self defense. The 240 gr XTP quick kills a hog from my 44 magnum Super Redhawk as long as I do my part.

Realizing the issue with plugging of the hollow point of the xtp it looks like the bullet is designed for higher velocities. What's needed is a soft point that expands like a hollow point.

I hit the range recently and the only failure to fire was a hornady xtp 124g custom... I ran almost 300 rds through my wildcat there no problem with thunderbolt wow... The hornady 9mm surprised me

Great test, Tools! Another very relevant test, too. I'm not a huge fan of the XTP, as they often shed their jackets in my zip lock water bag tests, although the 10mm 155's seem to hold together pretty well, even if penetration suffers. I suspect they are supposed to function best at Short & Weak velocities! I feel that both of these 9mm rounds could have used a bit more velocity, at least as far as I'm concerned. The CD's did ok but I'd like to see another couple inches of penetration. That's one of the reasons I like the Gold Dots so much, they pretty much hold together no matter what! I don't have a lot of use for watered down ammo in any caliber. But it seems the majority of shooters today are kinda whimpy and whine if their pistol "kicks" their delicate little hands too much! I wouldn't consider the XTP a failure because look how short the barrel is.. if you was using a 3.5"+ barrel there pretty much guaranteed to all work.. I just don't think they are designed for such a short barrel.. if you was using a 3" barrel i would think a 4"-5" would be perfect for that ammo

Great video, as always 👍. The inconsistent expansion of the XTP round, in 9mm and .380 acp seems to be a recurring theme in ballistics gel testing. Good design in hunting rounds at higher velocities.

Crtical Defense is generally a good reliable performer. Many times we also see good XTP performance but it generally penetrates deep with less expansion. The denim is critical in showing what bullets perform well on clothed targets

My understanding is the Critical Defense is tested out of a shorter barrel than the American Gunner. Even loaded not as hot, a longer barrel will give higher velocities.

This was a interesting video and glad to see how the critical defense performed, because I have always used the 9mm critical defense in my carry guns. I never knew how they would actually perform I just always liked the idea that they had the polymer filler in the center.
