BPH (that is, benign enlargement of the prostate gland) is usually blamed, at first glance, for urinary issues that men experience as they age, and while BPH is sometimes truly the cause of urinary symptoms, sometimes, other aging-related issues like an overactive bladder or a combination of different issues are actually responsible for the urinary symptoms. Here, PCRI's Alex asks Dr. Scholz about overactive bladder, its treatments and their side effects, and how physicians differentiate whether urinary symptoms are caused by BPH, overactive bladder, or anything else.
0:07 What does "overactive bladder" mean?
3:07 When a man has urinary symptoms, how do you differentiate between an overactive bladder, BPH, or other issues like prostatitis that can cause urinary symptoms?
4:38 What are the treatments for overactive bladder?
6:01 How efficacious are drugs like Mybetriq for overactive bladder?
6:44 Can the medications for overactive bladder interfere with prostate cancer treatment?
8:37 Can you take the medicines for overactive bladder long-term?

Hi, i watch almost every video you post and they have been very helpful to evaluate alternative treating options with my urologist, here in Mexico. I would like to suggest two topics: one for prostate cancer and bladder cancer coexisting and the other, bladder cancer and BPH coexisting. Thanks.

Really appreciate all of Dr. Scholz’s information. I have also noticed that Doctor rocks the ties in all his videos. Thanks for all you do for us. Formerly panicked Gleason 6 who can live with a few extra trips to the bathroom.

I am just starting treatment for prostate cancer and found out that if you need to have TURP done better to do prior to radiation etc. A video dealing with the combination of BPH and prostate cancer would be great. I have learned a great deal from the doctors book and these videos, thank you it has made me a much more engaged patient.

Hi Alex, thanks for posting these videos. Often patients undergoes surgery for BPH dues to enlarged prostate but later found out the surgery was not able to cure or reduce the urinary frequency as this was due to overactive bladder. Why was it difficult for the urologists to differentiate between overactive bladder and BPH. This could have saved the irreversible side effects of these BPH surgeries. Thanks

Mybetriq did help. I had an enlarged Prostrate and Uro still gave me a few weeks of samples to help until I had the Greenlight. The problem is it is not covered by insurance and costs aprox. $400 a month.

Dr. Schloz is saying that the vast majority of urinary symptoms as we age have nothing to do with cancer which is very reassuring. Yet it seems like every resource about prostate cancer quickly lists these symptoms as possible signs of prostate cancer without qualifying info that it is probably something else that is not life threatening. That fosters unnecessary high anxiety in men.

My only symptom of a problem was urgency. The GP said I'd a hard prostate which turned out to be prostate cancer.

How long did it take for them to detect it?! I wonder how many people take these overactive bladder medications for years only to find out they have cancer.

I've had overactive bladder for years. Tried almost all of the prescribed medications and found that Tovias is the only one that works for me and has few side effects, if any. The problem was that it was very expensive, $140.00 a month even with insurance. Much to my delight it is now available in generic and much less expensive.
