A guy in the MV club here bought a 1950's Humber 4x4 and commented about the bad knock in the engine. He got quite a discount on account of the probable engine rebuild. After getting it home he investigated further to find that the air compressor had been left engaged. Disengaging produced a beautiful running engine. He said it was the cheapest rebuild he had ever done.😀

You could try honing the cylinder. If the piston can pass the rusty bit without breaking the rings it should still work but with some loss of efficiency. I have a truck compressor which came from a shed clearance but it looks like a smaller type.

Definitely wants a sleeve and maybe strip it further or fill it with mineral oil and see if the crank turns easier.

How about filling the rust damage with JB weld seems to work with some good results on bore damage.

Would honing the cylinder do any good? Happy new year.

Not really the bad area is nearly 1mm deep.... The compressor isn't needed but wanted to establish if it was any good.... Will be kept for spares and possibly rebuilt in the future.

Vehicles this old have lived a life and seen stuff, so when working on them you have to form a relationship and get to know each other , gain a mutual respect for each other..... talking is a big part of the process... thought that was normal!
