IS IT BETTER?: New Rolex Explorer I 36 mm 124270

I've had my 36mm Explorer for 17 years now. Rolex returned to the 36 from the 39 for historical as well as aesthetic reasons They were not concerned about wrist size. Quite frankly, if it was good enough for Ian Fleming as he typed out the James Bond Novels, it's good enough for me.

I think 6.5” wrist it’s very perfect for 36mm

What’s the typeface? Is it Eurostile bold extended? That’s from the 1960s, not the 2000s.

I own and I love the 124270. It's perfect. *Except* for the font of the numerals. You nailed it. Going back to the 1016 style numerals is the only change that I could imagine wanting.

I ended up selling the new 36mm and luckily found a 39mm Mii at a good price. The 36mm was too small. Especially the bracelet. It felt and looked awkward on me. I love how the 39mm fits and looks! My wrist size is 17-17.5cm.

I agree with you about the size. I found my PERFECT solution with the JLC Geophysic 1958. Full disclosure….it was a limited edition run back in 2014 so you would have to pick one up on the secondary market. But it’s like JLC’s version of the Rolex Explorer. 38.5mm, 100m water resistant, latest tech, etc. i put mine on a nato strap and it is now the perfect ‘go anywhere, do anything’ watch.

I own both the 39 and new 36 and love both. I agree that I would jump on a new one with a 36 mm as this one, a mat dial and a 1016 font for the 369. That would be like the perfect explorer for me !

I like the font because….. if it changed it wouldn’t be the same. Similar to how the change from 36mm to 39mm changed the essence of the Explorer I. With the new 124270 it appears this case size is a staple just as the crown 👑.

I want to buy one but am not going to pay 11k for it. I do prefer the modern font. I think my next watch will be the IWC Portuguese 5102-03 hand wound 8 day. It’s also 7k.

1016 design aesthetic is far better than that of newer Explorers. The 1016 is luscious.

I regret selling my 1016 but will probably get this new version. Love the 36 size and prefer the older smaller size. I like the 1016 369 but this font came out in 1962, so at least it’s a little retro
