actually when u run in the rain you'll get more wet in the back of ur legs coz the water be splashing from ur feet and also you'll be more vulnerable to puddles and have a much higher chance to trip.

Its called superhydrophobic clothing bitches. you not going to forget that because your wearing it. just make sure all of your shirts have hoods and long sleeves on them, and you have no shorts and your shoes have to be superhydrophobic as well. Now stop standing in the rain searching if you should run or walk and go to the store, buy a ton of hooded shirts, pants, and shoes with no holes in them (at least as little holes that you can find) and go to the home depot and pick up superhydrophobic spray and follow the directions, not the warnings, and spray it on your clothes and shoes. now throw all of your clothing away that doesn't match the description of all the clothes you just bought. fuck off rain

There's a lot of complications to this problem. You assume that rain falls directly down, but most rain is accompanied by wind. Now, rain hitting you side is a function of time, distance, and speed (if you exactly match the speed of the wind, no rain will hit you from the side). Turns out, the best strategy into the wind is maximize speed, and with the wind you want to be a bit faster than the wind.

This is assuming wind doesn't exist. Rain doesn't fall in a straight line. It shifts and moves to a greater or lesser extent in waves in response to the constantly changing winds.
@jami.m7074
@jami.m7074 11 ай бұрын
Reality math is always cool, but you should consider adding the angle of the raindrops to your equation. They almost never fall straight down. Just a slight wind from different angles could change the equation a lot.
@sponggg_7096
@sponggg_7096 6 ай бұрын
I think the fact that you should run to shelter as soon as you can still applies when the rain is falling at an angle. You have to realise that you can break down the rain into horizontal and vertical factors, for small angles like 10°, most of the rain is still coming from the top. The horizontal part might result in you getting hit by more drops when running, but it's a fraction compared to the vertical part. So your main worry should still be time you spend in the rain. Since the rain is constant the trig identities might actually apply so you can see exactly how much more rain you'll get hit by if you take the sine and cosine respectively of the angle of the rain and multiply it by the amount of rain that falls on you. The parallelogram idea still applies here since the rain is constant.

I remember in secondary school the bell rang and i had to take the bus home, but the bus stop was a short walk away, 5 minutes or so. It started literally pouring buckets. I decided to take that walk very slowly, since my bus was gonna be late anyways. It was like i jumped in a pool. When the bus eventually came, water was forming a small puddle at my shoes. It was actually an amazing experience. I need to do this again sometime.

i think there's another factor that isn't mentioned here. when you stand still, your average cross sectional area (where raindrops will hit you from the top) is the minimum. but when you run, you lean forward, which increases your cross sectional area and expose your back and legs to rain too. to minimise rain, you should therefore try to run while remaining as upright as possible. however, this limits your top speed because it's harder to balance. so it's not immediately obvious how fast you should run. practically, i think maintaining balance (so you don't slip and fall), uprightness (to minimise vertical rain), and speed (to minimise time spent in the rain) would be the most effective. lean a little forward while still running at a good pace AND try not to slip.

But if you run you'll trip on wet ground and snap your neck, therefore I conclude the best way to get from point A to point B is to stand still.

The easiest way to think about it is with extremes. If you travel at 0km/h, you will be continually rained up and get soaked. If you travel at infinity km/h you will collect all the rain drops between you and your destination, but none from above.
@fruz1378
@fruz1378 6 ай бұрын
right, I am really not sure about the "whatever your speed, you take the same amount of rain on your head every second" assumption.
@richard7071
@richard7071 6 ай бұрын
@@fruz1378 yeah, but we don’t need to make that assumption. In the infinite speed example, none of the rain would fall on your head at all, because you would take zero time to reach the destination. If we go at almost infinite speed - say arriving at the destination in 0.01 seconds, we can be confident that less rain will land on top of our head than if we took 10 seconds.

I would have appreciated a brief acknowledgement that while running, you might be at more of an angle (more rain from above) or have your arms and legs move around more (some parts of the body travelling larger distances) compared with walking. In all likelihood these don't outweigh the benefits of going faster, but it does not do to ignore them either.
@tychoMX
@tychoMX 5 ай бұрын
I had this in a test in 1st year university. One girl in class said you should run - teacher said "you get more wet in the front". "Yes, but if you move fast enough the back is fully dry". She didn't get full points (no one did), but got partial credit.

It WAS my hardest physics word problem in year 11! It was set as homework but there was a difference (a road was included) and we hadn’t covered this in class. I spent hours and hours on it and eventually submitted: ‘better to run...but haven’t you ever been told not to run across a road?’. It was one of the reasons why I dropped physics before my final year, year 12.

When you've broken 3 or 4 umbrellas consecutively the first day you use them, you no longer see using an umbrella as a viable option. You prefer to get wet and save the money you would spend breaking more umbrellas.

I think that if rain is so intense that it will soak you fully wet in, for example, five minutes, but your destination is 10 minutes run or 20 minutes walk from current point, then there's nothing to calculate, you'll be soaked in 5 minutes no matter if you run or walk. Only point that makes sense to run instead of walk is that you won't spend as much time outside and you may sooner change wet clothes to dry ones.

My results were inconclusive as I’m pretty sure I knocked the stationary bowl, and simply didn’t collect enough data or have a proper way of measurement other then eying it.

rain doesn't fall at exactly the same rate in every spot. therefore you could be moving into zones with more or less rain for brief periods of time; this favors moving quickly, as decreased time will guarantee less instances of variation. in parallel, wind sheer.

You have no idea how much I needed this answer. Everytime it rained, this was the question in my head, well my answer was also the same as the amount of water landing on my head per second would be equal no matter how fast I am going, decreasing the time will decrease amount of water..
@cecon4181
@cecon4181 9 ай бұрын
I don't mean to be rude but you really need to work on your critical thinking and logical reasoning skills if this is something you genuinely questioned. For example, you could have easily solved this by comparing extremes in a hypothetical real world environment: Imagine it's raining pretty hard outside and you need to get to your car in your driveway. Would you be drier if you 1. run/fast-walk to your car OR 2. move at the speed of a snail/turtle ? The answer is obviously 1, so you should move more quickly if you want to get less wet

What we could do is that first avoid the raindrops that falls on ur initial position and move (x) meter from ur initial position but again before raindrops of ur new locations falls on you, you go back to ur initial position and avoid the rainfall of ur new location which is old location now. So now raindrop of ur new location which was ur initial position, but its new location now, move away from there to (a) with velocity of (y). Ok i dont know wtf im talking about. basically run back and forth

answer he is wrong walk you contact less water overall ... proof Mythbusters did this and came to the same theoretical conclusion but the data showed it to be the exact opposite ... because the speed of the falling water matters as much as the speed of the moving object .... the faster the object moves the more water it hits because it doesnt have a chance to fall out of the way ... a walking pace you hit a limited amount of water running you hit that amount and PHI more with each step because you are contacting water that would have been out of the way if you were going slower .... you actually end up hitting .618 times more water running than walking over the same distance at the same downpour ...
