Is It FMA? | Intro to Sticks & Sinawali
Play is a platform for learning. The stick is not a sword & this is not a fight.
In this video, there are 2 lessons here.
1. Adapt to the pattern after it has been broken and find a way back to the pattern if you wish to remain within the confines of the drill.
I am introducing Cooper to a double-stick pattern. This training platform is often called Sinawali. The patterns are mirrored and are done in sequence. You can change some variables such as speed, distance, height, and footwork. However, the predetermined choreographed pattern is a dedicated sequence of input and response. The drill begins to break down when you break the pattern. However, when you can find your way back to it, that demonstrates good adaptability.
2. The unique features of the tool may dictate how it is used.
In the method that I teach, we treat the stick as a stick and not a stand-in for a sword. If we want to train with a sword, we have the tools for that. The unique features of the tool will determine the techniques and use of it. A rounded stick cannot cut flesh like a blade can. Nor can a blade do the same thing a stick can. The intended use of each is unique. The movement patterns are universal, but the applications and strategies are different.
Discussion | Do you treat the stick as a sword and why or why not?
When exploring concepts of movement and tactics you are allowed to make mistakes. Failure is part of the process of learning.
