Auditioning For Juilliard (The Truth)

I had an absolutely fantastic time auditioning for The Juilliard School of Drama. Even though I had a couple awkward moments I wouldn't change it! I encourage everybody who is interested to apply if they have the financial means, it is an opportunity I will never forget!

Actually the acceptance rate to Juilliard as a drama major is less than 1%. The 6% refers to more general acceptance to the school. This video was really insightful, thanks for making it :))

I’m doing auditions next year and this video was very helpful. Out of curiosity did you get coaching for your audition, I’ve heard people do this but idk how worth it it is?

I had an actor friend coach me who also auditioned for Juilliard! I think it is helpful to have someone to watch you and give feedback who would tell you the truth! It doesn’t have to be intensive coaching but it can help! Trust yourself and your own process!

Hey could you talk about how you found monologues to do? I'm super struggling with the contemporary choices

I always start with googling monologues about something that I am interested in and something that could show my strengths as an actress. Then I narrow it down to about five scenes, take notes on them, try them out, and then I narrow down to which monologue I think would best work for me. Something to keep in mind for Juilliard specifically: read the entire play, learn about it (play writes name, when it was released, any fun facts about it) there is a chance they’ll ask you questions about the play and you want to make sure you can answer them well. Juliard wants scenes from plays, not from movies or film. Didn’t listen to them tho 😛

hi I have a question, Can you splain with more details the auditions, like how is all in the room of the auditions, there is more people than only de judges? and like approximately what the duration of the auditions? thank you for your video!!

Hi Valentina, I defiantly can explain! I might make a video with more specifics because this video felt pretty broad. So the audition room I was in had three faculty members sitting at a table. There was a line of tape on the floor as a mark of how far to go up. There was also a stool in the room that you could use for your scenes if you chose to. In my experience the auditions take from about 5-10 minutes, although mine felt like it was five seconds (haha). So you'll defiantly always have three judges in the room and you, nobody else. i'd say when you get out of high school, so like atleast 18? high school degree and i would recommend doing theater and performances in front of people to help you (i don't know how old tho for sure) 🙂

How strict do you think Juilliard is with the 2 minute time limit?

i auditioned a few weeks again and it’s not super strict. mine were a little over two minutes but if you can try and get them to 2 minutes to 2 minutes and 30 sec because they audition so many people. Plus with first and second round callbacks you’ll be seen multiple times ( if chosen ) and given adjustments and things so it’s easier if it’s around that 2 minute mark. Also you probably don’t care but I made it passed first and second round callbacks. Waiting to hear back if I get a NYC callback.
