Hotrod had a 318 build into a 392 cubic inch monster using magnum heads. The cam was a bit lopey but it was a super street motor. The thing made gobs of torque. Try looking it up as we followed the build to a tee and zero decked the block. It was in a 4 door diplomat and it was one of the fastest cars of that type I ever drove.

Hey Dylan, that cam and lifters are junk. The pitting you see is metal that has flaked off, so it's not a casting defect. Looks like a fun project, can't wait to see how it turns out.

One thing you quickly learn when pulling any engine is the tensile strength of whatever you forgot to disconnect! I'll be following this project for certain! Concerning the A/C in the car, by all means try to save it! The present refrigerant E134a can be a drop in replacement for the old R12. You will probably have to replace any O rings on the lines with the correct ones for 134...the good ones are identified by being green in color. Having lived in the South most of my life, A/C was a must! I hosted a friend from Michigan one fall, and he thought a four speed with air conditioning was really odd! I thought his black charger 2.2 with no air was one of the poorest choices...each to his own!

Just a word or three of encouragement for the magnum. I bought a ram 1500 a few years ago to do overlanding stuff with and use as a project for articles. Just imagine all the owner abuse possible- popped frost plugs from straight water, bad balancer, cracked heads, etc.. It's a very tough engine. Mine had over 300k miles and still had cross hatching on the cylinders with no ridge. I put a set of eq heads on it and it's now one of the most reliable things I've owned. I've been looking for a rwd car body to put a magnum in just to see what it will do as a good practical long hauler engine. Now I want to buy a Diplomat. haha.

My ol man bought a 83 diplomat with a 318 set up just like the one u have back in 88, here in MN we had to have ur car inspection process done like once a year and that's when my dad was informed that there was like 3 cadillac converter in his dual exhaust system, he would also like to flip the air cover upside down and womp on it and let the 4 barrel do it thing, that was a very fun car back when I was a kid, awesome vid and looking forward to this build u got going on here🤘

Admittedly, I’ve only ever personally looked at a few different sets of LA magnum cylinder heads. But every one I looked at were cracked. I know budget is always an issue, but if I were you I think I’d try to find a different set of heads for that thing. I think it’d save you a bunch of trouble down the road. Even if you don’t go for a set of aftermarket aluminum heads, a set of J’s would be a better option imo. Remember, under boost your head casting isn’t going to matter nearly as much as if it were n/a. Looking forward to seeing this build! 👍
@JLP-4402 жыл бұрын
You should be able to run the stock lifters with an aftermarket cam, especially with yours being low miles. I put a 318 magnum in my 68 Dart that had close to 200,000 miles on it, and all I did to it was put new bearings in the bottom end, slap a new cam and timing set in, as well as servicing the heads. The cam I put in was a Comp Cams XR274, it has .534/.538 lift, its been running for about a year now and still runs strong, doesn't even smoke. Magnum small blocks are awesome.

I'd like to see you get a good ole "C" body.

I'm astonished to learn that police vehicles in 1986 had 318s in them. We had 2 former police cars many years ago. A 1970 Plymouth Fury and a 1973 Plymouth Satellite. They both had 440s in them. Extremely well built cars, they were. I enjoyed the video as always!

Dylan I would've absolutely have kept that NV4500 trans with the 360 Magnum. That is a very highly sought after combination. I've told you this 103 times now, but I had a 1984 Dodge Ramcharger that had a 360 LA engine with an A727 trans with a NP-208 transfer case. I was dealing with vapor lock through the ThermoQuad until I yanked the whole swap and installed a 360 Magnum. I used the original 727 and transfer case, and I was able to wire it up and install an in-tank fuel pump and it ran great and pulled really hard. It felt more powerful than the LA and more linear powerband, but most importantly, it started every time and ran for hours without vapor locking. Sadly I scrapped it because the body was shot due to rust. Thanks Pennsylvania! I loved that truck. I really wish that I would've taken the time to replace the lower panels and bodyworked them in properly.

Just an FYI, the late Diplomat/Gran Fury squad cars had roller lifters and a different cam as compared to the civilian car version. And with that, some had 2BBLs and others had 4BBLs. They also had 8/14 Sure Grip with 2.90 gears as opposed to 7 1/4 with open 2.20 gears for civilian cars. And the 4bbl cars got a 727 vs the 2bbl cars that got the 904.
