Is it love or just confusion? I get so infatuated with a pen when I first get it. Is it love though? Let's see one of the Best Fountain Pens, the Pelikan M200!

My M200 is a pen I inherited from my father, who used fountain pens as a portrait artist. I also have an M600 (green stripe), M700 (Toledo) and an M800 (burnt orange), but they do not diminish the M200 in my eyes. Great writer, smooth filling mechanism, zero downside.

I have a Pelikan M200 that I bought around 1995 from a Staples Office Supply store for $15. You read that right. At that time, they retailed for around $80 new, but the execs at Staples decided they no longer wished to carry this pen so they had their stores put them in cut-out bins and mark them down to $15. Their loss; my gain. I love this pen. I currently own a total of nine Pelikans, including several vintage ones from the early '50s (two 140s, a 400NN, and a beautiful brown tortoiseshell 400). I also have several modern Pelikans, an M400, a red tortoiseshell M600 like yours, and two M800s. I love my birds. Thanks for a great video.

Oh, be careful! Once you've been bitten by the Pelikan's beak, it's hard to stop from amassing a whole flock of 'em! I have a vintage (c.1956) NN400, a number of different M400s, an M800 with a nib-meister tweaked flex italic nib, M600 (probably my favorite). Oddly, I was late to the game in trying out their steel nibs so, yup, I have an M205 that I alternate with a modern 120! Love 'em both!

I only have one Pelikan in my flock …a M205 Apatite with a medium nib. I thoroughly enjoy writing with it. Wonderful piston filler. My favorite capping pen because it screws on or off with less than a full rotation. Smooth with just a touch of feedback. Flat(ish) ends. And, as you mention, reserved enough for business but beautiful appearance.

Interesting topic and video, as always. I have an M800 and an M600 (the same beautiful red tortoiseshell one you have), and I also have an M200 Smoky Quartz. And I almost hate to say it, but the M200, which cost a lot less than the other two, and has a steel rather than a gold nib, actually is the best writer of the three. It has a beautiful springy nib and generous flow, whereas the M600 and M800 have nibs that are as hard as nails. They're perfectly machined, but don't have the same character as the M200, which is so relaxing to use, and like you said, does have that vintage feel. I noticed the same thing about nib widths too, since I also have mediums on the M200 and M600, and they bear no resemblance to each other. To confuse things further, my M800 is a fine, but lays down the same width of line as the M600.

I own 3 of these, purchased about 20 years ago, with my name inscribed on the caps. Two are still unused in their boxes. I own several of the fine 100 series. To this southpaw, Pelikan is a fantastic writers and without the pretension of the MontBlanc line. I was so delighted when Pelikan was bought by a pen lover and not another 'luxury' conglomerate.

As a new subscriber to your channel I do look forward to new content. I have watched most of your earlier videos. A pleasure to watch. I have 2 Pelikan m205. Blue marble with fine nib. Petrol marble with extra fine nib. The fine nib is very smooth and wet. It almost feels like a medium. The extra fine is smooth and it writes like an extra fine. They are my favorite fountain pens. I hope to purchase 8 m200,m205 so I can give one to each of my grandchildren. I really like the red pelikan you showed. It is on my buy list. Glad I found your channel.

My mother gave me a Pelikan 400 with a rare OB nib, which requires a little practice when writing. But the result in the typeface is beautiful. It's a little bit reminiscent of a stub nib. When I got it, the Pelikan fountain pen was still filled with dark green ink; I have kept the habit and only use Pelikan 4001 dark green. A classic green that doesn't want too much and still looks very attractive and pleasant. In contrast to “Diamine November Rain” ink, which appears very festive and impressive with its red shimmer. Perfect for Christmas cards. What bothers me a little is the fact that Pelikan is now owned by an investor from Malaysia and is therefore no longer a family business. One can only hope that production remains in Germany. Personally, I prefer the classic look and think that fountain pens are primarily intended for writing and do not belong in the display case.

This is one of my absolute favourites ! I always recommend a beginner to get a Pelikan 200 as they have the great combination of being affordable and giving a superb writing experience. I have four of them now and I suspect I will continue to collect them in colours I do not have. One can never go wrong with a Pelikan! One of them is always resting in my porcelain Pelikan pen stand, the Pelikan holds the pen in its beak. I honestly prefer the 200S to my more expensive 400 as they are more comfortable for someone with small hands. Thank ypu for a good review of this true quality workhorse pen!

HJ- wonderful video, as always. Your enthusiasm for the Pelikan M-200 pen shows!!! Well, I , like you, really like Pelikan pens, just because of the wonderful quality of the pens themselves, and because of the many sizes they are available to suit all sorts of writers and their needs. I currently own only 2 Pelikan pens, both are the M-1000 model, one with a fine nib and the other with a medium nib. Both are wonderful pens, with the medium nibbed pen being the one with a jucier ink flow. I use both quite a bit. The reason I have only the M-1000 model is because it is the largest Pelikan fp available, comparable in size to the MB 149 pen, and given my physical problems, I find it easier to write with without stressing, and causing fatigue to the muscles of my palm and the fingers. Like you, I do love my Pelikan pens, not only because of quality of the pen and its nibs, its long heritage. Have wonderful time writing with your M-200 pen!!!:):):) -Sid

My first pen was a Pelikan 120 with 3 italic nibs, fits in my hand great, and went on to own several 120s, an m220 with a gold nib I put in the collar, a couple of 150s, and a m600 with a nib custom cursive by Mike Masuyama, my go to letter writer. Oddly enough I bought the very same pen (m200, green marble, medium nib) three days ago-also from Amazon. The box was not exactly pristine. Hmm. Pen looked nice, though. I cleaned it and it’s a good thing I did: clouds of blue ink residue poured out. What the heck, was this a store’s display pen? Did someone return this pen? I dried it out and inked it up: all’s well that ends well. The pen writes beautifully and I’m really enjoying it. I wouldn’t say it writes like a fine: I would characterize it as within the medium bandwidth. It’s very smooth, great flow, a pleasure to write with. It is very light. That it only takes about 2/3 of a rotation to open makes it a quick draw, though I would be a little concerned about the cap coming off if it’s jostled too much. This is my first Pelikan and all in all I am very pleased with it.

I own a couple of vintage 140 and a 400NN all with flex nib. I haven’t spend much time with them and their nib deserves some fine tuning but they are clearly very fun pens to use. I’ve never tried other Pelikan, generally (and I discovered it recently in my journey) I tend to prefer Japanese fine nib and except for these specialty flex nibs in vintage I’ve always been stopped from looking that way as I read many times Pelikan was rather on the wider side, but your video might make me rethink that… thanks for sharing

This video topic jumped out at me. Because I have finally, belatedly bought my very first Pelikan pen. It is no small mystery to me why and how it took me so long to finally get one. Yes, I bought the M200, brown marble with gold trim. With a gold plated medium steel nib. I received the pen less than a month ago. I’m quite besotted with it already. Going by reviewers’ comments and online photos of the pen make it appear deceptively smaller than it actually is. Unposted, which is how I use almost all my pens, the M200/205 is actually pretty comfortable and alright in my large-ish hands. It is very light but entirely nice to hold in hand, when writing. And I love its blatantly vintage-y looks and vibes. I had heard about the alleged consistency of Pelikan’s steel nibs. It was one reason why I guess I held off buying one. This time I just decided to go for it. I’m glad I did, because the medium steel nib on my pen writes truly wonderfully, without the slightest hitch. Straight out of the box, smooth, moderately wet and a true medium line-width (to my eyes, anyway). I still think the M200 is priced quite high, all things considered. Special/limited editions don’t help with the pricing, obviously. For $25-$30 more, you could get a Lamy 2k or a Platinum 3776 Century (in the U.S.) with 14k nibs. However, the M200’s steel nib doesn’t make me feel that I’m losing too much in the actual writing experience. I also wish the piston mechanism in the pen was designed to sit further back in the barrel and not take up what seems to me to be a bit too much room - thereby sacrificing added ink capacity. The piston works flawlessly and I love the ink window. It is a great pen, and my newest love. Kudos for the video, Hemingway.

@@HemingwayJones ..Thanks for reading my long comment and replying straight away. I really am extremely happy with my M200. So, your video here and feelings about the pen were straight after my own heart. I also wish that in your green marble and my brown marble pens, there was a bit more green and brown in them, respectively. I reckon I’ll get the M400 next; identical size, only with the 14k gold nib instead. And the nibs are readily interchangeable. That is actually also another asset in cleaning out your M200 i.e. you can unscrew the nib unit out for even easier flushing and cleaning. Pelikan’s prices have risen steeply during the last 3-4 years, and there’s no sign that it’s about to stop. That is worth keeping in mind, for both of us, when we plan to buy more Pelikan pens in the near future. Re: posting pens, I honestly have always detested it, outright. The very sight of anybody posting a pen makes me cringe. That, and ‘reverse’ writing is another. Alas, the only pens I grudgingly post are my handful of pocket pens, only because I’m forced to do so. I’d like to see your video on that, certainly.

It dosen't matter wether M200 Classic or Souverän Series, just go with you budge, even when you can get Japanese gold nib fountain pens for cheaper (they are also good, just to be clear). That is what I say when I recommend fountain pens to other peaple. I have noticed Pelikan fountain pens are the most I have in my collection. M600 is my personal favourite, the size suits me better, unless I can get a M800 piston in aluminium or plastic, the brass piston is too heavy for. Thanks for the video, really entertaining to watch. Best regards.

@@HemingwayJones I don't know, just after I bought this and that pens, I always go back to Pelikan, maybe it's because the interchangablity of the nibs which opens a big playground, maybe is the functionality overall as a fountain pen, not fancy but I know it won't disappoint me. Wish You have fun with the E95S and looking forward to watch Your review.

I was surprised by your use of ‘Souveran’ with M200 (since I thought Soveran is associated with their more expensive Gold nib variants) and did some reading.. As per my reading, Soverans have gold nibs, gold plated cap top and two cap bands while ‘Classics’ have steel nibs, plastic cap tops and one cap band.. By the looks of your M200, I think it’s a ‘Classic’.. Pls correct me if I’m wrong ( I’m not a Pelikan expert/historian 😃) My first Pelikan was a P381 - A short lived model (1992-95), supposedly and surprisingly made in India with a 14Kt gold nib. It was a gorgeous and slim pen, made of metal and at a very attractive price (it was a NOS).. Unfortunately it was so ‘skippy’ that it wasn’t usable, so I had to return it.. My second Pelikan (and the only one I own) is M200 Special edition Pastel green (Fine). Surprisingly my writing experience is exactly the opposite of yours - Fine writes more like a Medium (and this is what I’ve heard in a few other M200 reviews too).. This is one of my favorite pens, but I think it’s slightly overpriced at $160 which I paid here in India..

Sathish, you’re quite correct. The M200 line is designated as ‘Classic’. When I bought mine recently, it clearly said ‘classic’ in all the descriptions. Same thing elsewhere around the world. And yes, Pelikan nibs are widely and for long have been reputed to write wider than their stated size point. But this is supposedly true only for their gold nibs. My M200’s medium steel nib writes like a perfectly true (Western) medium. Vintage Pelikan is very lovely and very classic, too. 🙂

@@sajjadhusain4146 Thanks for your inputs, Sajjad.. But we can see ‘souveran’ being used (possibly incorrectly) with M200 in a few sites.. For Eg., you can see such a listing for M200 Green Marble in Amazon US..I think this is one of the reasons for confusion.. I guess this M200 you bought recently is one of your many Pelikans ?

No, you’re not wrong.I picked that up from the invoice of the seller. A lot of sellers sell it that way. I then did similar research and couldn’t find Pelikan labeling it that way and so I actually edited it out of the video, but that one instance got by me. I’m still not sure how I missed it. Usually invoices are definitive. Producing weekly videos is tough, but one mistake in a year isn’t too bad. I do strive for perfection. All the best.

@@sathishrao7926 …Oh yes, confusion stemming from inaccurate labeling of models by online sellers/retailers are not uncommon. In a similar, but not entirely analogous case, Japanese pens are routinely carriers of different names in different regions i.e. a particular name/color/number etc…at home in Japan and something very different abroad, esp. in the U.S. My favorite Sailor pens, for example, are notorious for this. The fact that they have such a dizzying variety of models only adds to the confusion when called different names. And no, this is my first Pelikan ever. I can hardly believe it myself. I mentioned this in my opening post here. I think I’ll very likely get the M400 or M600 next. But they are all priced rather too high than I want to pay for them. I feel similarly about the M200’s price as I have already mentioned earlier. Hemingway’s red Pelikan, though, makes me drool with desire. A very inexpensive Pelikan w/steel nib that I wish to buy, if I can find it, is the Stolla III. Waski owns one. I wouldn’t mind having one myself.

Shoot, Hemingway. I had just about finished a somewhat long comment when it disappeared and I can't get it back. So I'll be brief. IMHO the 205 is the pen world's equivalent to the Nike running shoe--a decent pen, but a lousy value. My 205 is the least expensive model, as is my Sailor Pro Gear Slim (a Blue Dwarf), which is nearly identical in size. The 205, incredibly, lists for more than the Pro Gear. While the 205 "beats" the Pro Gear in having a great piston filling system, IMHO the Pro Gear beats the 205 handily in every other measure of greatness there is for a fountain pen--especially in terms of the quality of the nibs. A nail vs soft gold. A no-brainer.

Noooo! That's the worst. So sorry! I sometimes write in my Notes App for that very reason. I love the analogy. I am usually comparing pens to watches, but this works very well. They are impressive and have amazing nibs. The 1911L has the least expensive 21K nib I can think of. Great pens. Thanks!

@HemingwayJones 2 жыл бұрын
They are both very smooth. Personally I like my old nibs when they do something; are very soft or flex. The Pelikan is very smooth with nice feedback, but is it $400 better than the M200? Not really. Now, the materials on my M600 elevate it, but if I were choosing. Steel is great and very similar. The gold has a bit more bounce. I write lightly though so that equals out.

Speaking of lineage, Conklin always upsets me with their labeling. They stamp Toledo on their nibs and just released a pen called the Toledo, but they haven't made a pen in Toledo, Ohio for decades. I have lived in Northern Ohio my whole life and my son is about to attend Toledo university. I would love to say I can support a somewhat "local" fountain pen company, but they really aren't....at least Edison Pens is even closer to my home and is really a northern Ohio company.
@sajjadhusain4146

Conklin not only makes utterly meh pens with invariably crappy nibs, but are clearly conning some of their customers who don’t know, with the Toledo tag when the pens are definitely made in China. Edison and Franklin-Christoph, to their credit, still make many lovely pens right here in America. Gosh, if only they also made their own nibs.

During your introduction you mention the M200 Souveran. To be exact, the Pelikan M200 is not part of the Souveran Line, but of Pelikan’s Classic Line. The Souveran Line start with the M400/405, followed by the M600/605, M800/805 and the famous M1000/1005.
