Greetings from Germany. My old blue Lamy safary from my school times is still in business. And with me in the office. I'm collecting fountain pens since 10 years, but my safary is still the allrounder in my life.

I love bringing my Twisbi Eco to work, because it gets a lot of people going "is that a fountain pen?" Then I get to talk about pens until they regret their question.

I love the 2000. I just don't have one right now. Also, I have a little trouble finding the nib sometimes. This happens with all hooded nibs with me, even with the Parker 51. Is this an issue for you? Thanks!
@braggadocious Жыл бұрын
@@HemingwayJones hooded nibs don’t usually give me trouble…though I had my 2000 tuned to more of a Japanese EF. Later, the barrel broke and I still need to send it off to get fixed. Have been dragging my feet on getting it fixed: my nib preference these days is M (and wanting to experiment with B, stub, etc.). Love the ink capacity and was a great everyday pen when I used it!

I need to get myself a Pilot Custom 823 one of these days... Maybe after my next really big closing :) My essential fountain pens for business include the E95s for signing contracts, TWSBI Vac 700 (with the 1.1 stub) for thank you and Christmas card to clients/agents, but then I use my Platinum Plaisir in the field for showings as my work horse pen because it is cheap AND very durable, and lastly, I use my Pilot Vanishing Point during my Tuesday business meetings because of how easy it is to "cap" and "uncap" while taking notes.

You sound like me, I buy pens after closings! E95S just joined my fleet. I like that pen. Vac with a stub sounds amazing. All great choices including the VP!

Nice list. I used to worry about the Montblanc 149 sending the wrong message, as you mention, but nowadays so few people use fountain pens that I hardly ever run into anyone else with such a pen, let alone a 149...

That’s a good point. In my world, when I run into another FP owner it usually is a 149. A lot of finance guys. All the best.

Nice summary, I also work in the financial industry at the frontier between science, business, and risk. Not so much with clients and now seldomly physically in office. For work I use a bunch of kaweco sports (brass, steel, aluminium, and one art) mostly color coordinated. My workhorse is the brass version with kon peki. For projects writing I have a few gravitas pocket pens also color coordinated but in a less vivid palette. The kaweco have fine nib, the brass with a gold nib from a spanish nib firm, super smooth, and the gravitas are equipped with semi flex nibs. So my set is rather utilitarian and definitely much less elegant than yours, but I appreciate your taste and the thoughts you bring to what pen for which purpose! Cheers, Chris
@HemingwayJones2 жыл бұрын
Hello Chris, I love your choices and especially that Brass Kaweco, which is one of my favorites. I have it with a medium nib and a 1.1 Stub (their calligraphy nib). It is a great pen for all occasions. How do you find the Gravitas flex pen? It looks very nice indeed. Thank you for the kind words and all the best.
@ChrisGVE2 жыл бұрын
@@HemingwayJones I love the gravitas pens, I haven’t purchased (yet) one of their flex but I installed jowo compatible flex nib (from India if I remember well). I like these flex and they have a reasonable flow given that the pocket only take small int’l cartridges so it doesn’t dry up the cartridge in a single paragraph :)

I work at a hospital in Radiology, I just use my Lamy Safari, gray, extra fine. I pair it with some cheap Seikos to not draw too much attention, It’s a perfect nib for small writings on patients charts, forms and log books. It’s a work horse of a writing instrument. my MontBlancs I use at home or at dinner restaurants to sign the tab and match them with my luxury time pieces.

Great list of five! The Pilot 823 is for sure a pen that the more I use the more I like. I have it with a fine nib, and it reveals always perfect with any kind of paper I use. It is an extremely reliable pen, aimed at writing. Another pen that I believe is a must, because it is a stealthy pen that anyway assures you the best writing experience one could only expect from a 1kUSD pen, is Pilot VP. Then I would include the Pelikan M1000, for its super outstanding nib and the constructive quality.

Dear Hemingway, I just enjoyed watching this video and I am really happy to see that there are more people like me who have a love for fountain pens and inks. I have not used any of the pens you mentioned in video, but I have used Sheaffer 440, Parker 45, Parker Frontier, Pelican Pelicako, Wing Sung 698 and some Jinhao models. For office use, I think the most desirable features of a pen (beside smooth and flawless writing) are (1) Being lightweight, and (2) Having sufficient ink storage to last for several pages when out on a field visit. I have now subscribed to your channel and look forward to more great stuff 😊

What a great/imaginative choice of topics! Thanks again, Hemingway. As a retired casualty defense trial lawyer, I "get" your selections. Being comfortably retired I feel "freer" to think more creatively now. Hence, it seems to me that if one's office isn't too stuffy, it would be fun to match pens to occasions and/or locations. For example, on the upcoming 4th of July, I might sport my Conklin limited edition, red, white and blue Freedom pen. Around Mardi Gras here in the New Orleans area, I suspect a Narwhal Traveler with Mardi Gras colors would fit right in even the most staid outfits. And if it didn't, the heck with them! On President's Day, I wouldn't hesitate to bring my Retro 51 Lincoln. For "stealth" everyday use, a pen with just a bit of flair but not so much as to draw unwanted attention: the Diplomat Traveler with the "torched" finish. I could go on, I suppose, but enough fun for today. Back to the "honey dos."

I have a technical role in industrial automation, my daily use pen is a Pelikan M815 Metal Striped - my enjoyment of the writing experience encourages me to keep detailed notes, which has been invaluable at times. On site, I might substitute something less valuable, like a Hongdian N7, just so I don't have to worry too much in harsher environments. I'm tempted by the style of the Waterman Carène, I must say.

I have two of them and two of the reissued Crest models. I've always had a soft spot for Sheaffer's because, starting in second grade in the early sixties and up through high school, in my district we had to use fp's and almost all of us used those one-Dollar Sheaffer's cartridge pens and washable blue Skrip.

Well, I spend 3 days in the office and 2 working from home. I usually take 2 of my Lamy Al-Star pens with me, and I also take both of my Pilot Vanishing Point fps, and a Parker Duofold Centennial fp to the office. And on my desk I have a pen cup filled with about 20 Bic Stic ballpoints for people to use should they need something to write with. I write a lot with my pens at work, because I draft all the press releases and other stuff by hand with my pens, and when I am done, I hand the drafts to one of the student employees to type it out. People in the office usually come in a look at what pen I am using, and I have also converted a few of them to fountain pen users. I gifted them all a Lamy Safari zPen with a convertor and a bottle of ink. Overall, I find that using fps gets in a better state of mind, that allows for a wonderful work environment at the office. Thanks, Hemingway, you have made another very interesting and an informative video. Thank you, and have a happy 4th of July weekend. -Sid

Hello, I work in a metalworking factory and in an office. The most suitable set for me is: PARKER 51 black with steel cap, lead pencil from the set, a 4-color PARKER black and steel multipen from Germany (circa 1960). They add to the set a JUNGHANS AGENDA steel black strap watch and a FILOFAX Mini Finsbury model. A reliable and very sober set. Both the JUNGHANS and the PARKER 51 were designed by BAUHAUS designers and this is clearly perceived by the cleanliness of their shapes, creating a sensation of absolute harmony.

149 and 823 were ‘usual suspects’.. Choice of Vintage pens (51 and Legacy) for business meetings was a little surprise, but not unexpected.. But I didn’t expect a Safari to make it to this list ! Being in Software industry with almost all meetings being virtual, I don’t usually get to carry and use my pens outside of my house..But the only time I attended Offsite meetings / training sessions in the last 3 years, I carried a Vanishing point and a Sheaffer Intensity (both Black with GT). Needless to say that I was the only one using fountain pens in these sessions 😞

Yes, yes, yes for the Parker 51, Waterman Carene, and Sheaffer! I am a big fan of "classic" fountain pens from the brands that led the way! I would add Cross Century II (because I have a lot of them.) I tend to like using "flashy" pens in meetings with others, but I always have some reliable "cheapies" that are great writers in my desk drawer! My favorites are the Kaweco Sport, Platinum Plaisir, and Pelikan Twist! Also, I generally stick to cartridges to avoid messes and running out of ink. I love my pens that will hold a "spare" cartridge inside the pen--very convenient! I will have to check out those Pilot Kakunos--love the smiley face on the nib!

Thanks for a great video - Very good content, and some lovely pens. I used to use a Montblanc 144, but it got way too much attention for me (snow-cap syndrome), so I switched to a Montblanc Noblesse 1124 stainless steel model, and a Caran d'Ache Ecridor. As slim, metal, cartridge pens, I can clip them into the inside pocket of my suit jacket, and whilst they look smart, they cause no reaction from colleagues or clients. They are also 100% reliable and tough. I used to work with a guy who carried a Montegrappa pen which was the size of a baby's arm and covered in glitz, so it takes all sorts! Most meetings began with a 10 minute discourse about his pen.

Reliable, and durable. It goes with me everywhere. Second, a Sailor Pro Gear Black with silver hardware. Medium nib that writes very finely. My final three are all Pelikan: Pelikan Souverän M600 Green Black F. My ‘extra shot of confidence’ pen is the Pelikan Souverän M805 Stresemann Grey. Finally, the Pelikan Souverän M1000 Black F. The props are hilarious! What is the uncapped (!) pen doing in the purse? I disagree on the 149, for note taking (what a business pen primarily does) the nib is too big, better chose a 146 or even better 147. The Lamy drys out quickly, for my daily note taking pen, I want reliability. Montblanc, Kaweco, and most Japanese pens stay fresh for month or years.

I like Safari, but it's not a pen I would take to the office. Maybe because I really like those vibrant colors. Re Montblanc, 149 is a beautiful pen but a bit too big for my hand. It's great for signature, but I can't use it for anything longer. My favourite office pen is MB 146 ("LeGrand") with an EF nib, so I can still write on cheap office paper. In situations when MB is a too bold statement, I use Sheaffer Prelude (brushed chrome, F nib). It's very comfortable.

Setting aside the pens, this video was full of very elegant props and some exotic locations. All enjoyable to watch. I suppose business pens or office pens are dependant on the kind of work you do. I don't think the Lamy Safari is super impressive in a work environment especially when compared to the others on your list. I would have left that one out. The other four pens were really excellent pens for business use. If I had to choose one it would have to be the 149.

@@HemingwayJones The Kakuno arrived ! You're right...this is a cute pen & to me, that's fun. It writes very nicely. W/the converter in it, I put Jacques Herbin Violet Boreal in it. Thank you for an interesting video. My usual low-risk office pen is a vintage Parker 45, often a flighter but not always. These are very affordable, low-key, robust pens that perform really well. I've picked up very serviceable examples with gold nibs from the 1960s for less than £15. I'm definitely with you on the Parker 51, and I have the exact same pen as you. The "what would Don Draper use?" question is fun. I'd always thought of him as more of a Sheaffer "Pen For Men" guy, but maybe the '51 is a better fit given the creative element of his character. Aside from the '51 if I want to feel a bit more "business" I also go for my Parker Duofold Maxima, one of the 1950s/1960s aerometrics made in England. A big nib, good ink capacity, and a screw cap that makes me feel classier when I use it. For work, I also like to match the pen with its companion ballpoint, just in case there are times when I have to work with paper that's not fountain pen compatible. It's always a bit of a disappointment, but this approach at least maintains the aesthetic.

As a happy vintage Parker "51" owner I have to ask about your "51" - that pen looks like new! I'm thinking that's an early '40s Vacumatic "51". The cap especially looks like it brand new, if I am correct in identifying it as Rhodium-plated Sterling Silver? Also may I ask the pen's year of manufacture, the nib size, and the ink you're using in the video? Thanks; and thank you for the great videos.

I’d maybe add a TWSBI for their large ink capacity or a vintage esterbrook pocket pen (love these).

Such a fun topic for those of us who use fountain pens at work. I've rotated through many, but my current lineup is a Leonardo Momento Zero Grande with Iroshizuku Shin-Kai for my signature pen. The blue black is perfect. I find my self using my Pilot Custom 74 with Kon-Peki quite a bit. My unsung heroes are two TWSBI ECOS. my choice would depend on the situation and would consider function first, jewelers second (but important). In reality (unless it's a FP related business meeting) Montblanc 146/149 would be the most appropriate choice and is also the choice I see the most. Some classy (black or blue) Pelikans can also be seen in the wild, especially "popular" among engineers, architects and alike. Anything other than these two will automatically put you into a FP geek camp and will earn extra respect points from me. IMHO, I'd avoid anything with "made in Italy" on it for any serious business activities (unless you want to have a 30min side discussion titled "what is this pen"). Some other good choices are: Waterman Hemisphere, Montblanc Rouge et Noir, Pilot Vanishing point and of course S.T. Dupont (not lashy ones)

Absolutely brilliant list. Thank you. Waterman pens are lovely and largely unloved in the US.

I know this is nearly sacrilegious to say in the FP community, but I really don't like the Parker 51. I went on a big Parker binge earlier in my FP days and of course added several 51s but I've come to realize they just don't do it for me. Now, the 823 is a horse of a different color! A wonderful pen. The Sheaffer Legacy is betwixt and between for me. The original fill mechanism was pretty leaky for me but once I switched to pure cartridge use for it, it writes like a dream.

I bought a new Parker 51 and I love the design. However, using it is a pain. The ink won‘t flow properly, it stops while writing all the time and after a day or so it won‘t even start at all, even with Kon-Peki in the converter. Any suggestions?
@HemingwayJones2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, Kon-peki fixes many things. I did a whole video on that. Did you clean it before you first filled it? That is important. Sometimes some oil remains for manufacturing and fouls everything up. If that doesn't work, I would invoke the warranty.
@genevievemorgan78212 жыл бұрын
Is it still within warranty because I'd return it. I have three vintage Parker 51s which will write without skipping or hard starts even though I leave inked up for weeks at a time. In not too happy with the new version but you'll have paid enough for it so do get in touch with the shop you bought it from or use the warranty.
@markritchie7059 Жыл бұрын
I agree with Genevieve. I have Vintage Parker "51"s and when in good condition / restored, they perform flawlessly. I wrote with one today I haven't used in 3-4 weeks and it wrote perfectly from the moment the nib touched the page. You can buy top notch condition used "51"s for half what the new gold nib 51 will cost. And with that, you are getting the real Parker hooded nib and ink delivery system, which the new 51 does not use. That the "51" is a good size and feel for my preferences is of course a deal maker as I find the "51" to be literally a perfect pen. That said, the owner/user experience can be more easily met by opting for the Aerometric "51"s, made from 1948 to the late 60s; I would suggest the earlier "51" Vacumatic from 1941 - 1948 has a different filling system and is less owner-serviceable but still a fantastic pen if you get a fully restored one. It'll probably outlive you before needing its next service.
