It's hard to believe these are 10 years old already. I couldn't believe Apple switched to the Intel processors they bashed for so many years, but the consumer PPC roadmap was practically dead. I remember drooling over the new Powermac G5s, and people are pulling those out of dumpsters these days!

Shove an SSD into one of these things, and they still have some pretty decent potential! Especially with the later core 2 Duo models.

Could you not stick DOS on one of these or XP and run some old games? We need to know! Processor might upgrade to a Core2Duo from ebay. (Less tiring episode than driving round Dallas. And is the claw with no cog obsolete?)

@@jason_a_smith_gb technically you can install XP so long as the unit has an internal working SuperDrive installed. Dos though, I’m not sure cause of drivers... also you can’t upgrade the CPU. The chips are saudered to the board.

Cutoff for XP support is probably any mac released up to 2011. Up to that point the XP drivers are on the Snow Leopard install DVD, but Bootcamp in Lion doesn’t officially support XP. I’m pretty sure the drivers are somewhere on the internet if you don’t have the DVD.

For 2019 and beyond, I would recommend that if you want to buy one of the plastic Macbooks, that you choose a 2009, whether it be an early or late model. Both can be made to run macOS Mojave if you use Dosdude1's macOS Mojave Patcher. If you just want a cheap Mac laptop to run Linux on, I'd go with a 2007 Macbook. The price is nearly the same as the original Macbook, but since the 2007 has a Core 2 Duo CPU, it can run a lot more Linux distros than the Core Duo Macbooks. However, if you already have a Core Duo Macbook lying around, go ahead and put Linux on it. Windows 7 is going to be discontinued on January 14th, 2020 (sad), and since Snow Leopard is getting outdated as David showed in his video, Linux is the best option for Core Duo Macbooks, and for any Core Duo Mac really.

+Topher Glenn Same here. I think most people hate due to the fact they have defend their purchases/investments from getting trounced by other peoples perception of 'mine's better than yours'. As a gadget geek myself, sure I may have bought stupid and useless products, (Ouya, Blackberry Playbook), but I never once made fun of someone using a Playbook tablet in public by because my experience for using one sucked. I'm more curious on how it works for them. But yeah my MacbookPro = office, work; PC = gaming, coding; Windows10, OSX El Capitan, Ubuntu; Me = :D

@RWoody1995
@RWoody1995 9 жыл бұрын
+Topher Glenn the hate comes from people not liking the way the company that makes the system runs, apple likes to make their stuff very locked down, you can't do anything that's not approved by apple, although we all know the reason they do this is so they can make sure everything is of a good quality and secure but the freedom and infinite amount of programs and possibilities available on a windows pc and linux pc is much more appealing to a lot of people also theres the cost thing, if you wanted the apple hardware just to run windows you can but then you end up spending twice as much on the hardware just to run the same software that hardware half the cost will run and can still have the same build quality.
@IsettasRock
@IsettasRock 9 жыл бұрын
+megaspeed2v2 Exactly! Plus, when I own a piece of computer hardware I expect it to be open and configurable to do what I'd like it to do, not what some company thinks I want (or thinks I shouldn't be able to do). The last Apple product I bought was a Apple 2+ back in 1981....I'll never again buy anything from Apple.
@Chris-yj2di
@Chris-yj2di 9 жыл бұрын
IsettasRock Okay, but does that warrant some kind of adolescent hate from you? I don't think so, and It shouldn't, just don't buy it. I personally like being able to plug a midi instrument into my Mac and not having to worry about sound cards or drivers...I don't hate my PC because of it. It's like having two different tools in a toolbox. My original post was aimed at people who froth at the mouth and get angry in regards to one setup or another, which is childish.

Watching it on my recently acquired 2009 13 inch Pro running Linux Mint 18 and I can certainly say that it's a million times snappier than my Win7 2013 Dell Latitude with its i5. I use the lowest spec model of the MBP but I upgraded to a 515GB SSD, cleaned out the insides till it looked new (changed thermal paste too cause it became dust) and went from 2 to 8GB RAM. It's speed, efficiency and battery easily matches any 2017 i3 laptop by Acer or other brands. Absolutely not obsolete, and at least I can still use my SD cards and wired mice while charging and connected to a monitor... without a dongle :D. So happy because my Uncle gave it to me corrupt thinking it was broken and little did he know, I brought it back to life and it's freshhh.

Even more so on older systems since its hardware requirements are way lower than windows 10 and you don't run the risk of ruining the whole system with the next update.... Also for whatever reason the runtime on battery is way better on windows 8 than on windows 10 (on older machines).

So I'll say windows 10 really good for ssds. I have windows 8.1 with classic shell, hell I have windows 10 installed as a secondary to keep up with the look, I always use classic shell. Someone just gave me an early 2008 macbook with a core 2 duo and 1GB of ram in it. It will run OS X up to 10.7 (Lion), but on top of having to pay for it, all browsers i saw would require at least OS X 10.10 to be able to install. I had to decide if I would keep it as kind of a collectible, or install another OS and use it normally. Done some performance tests and it behaved quite well, so I put 4 GB of ram in it and installed windows 10 64 bit (just burn a DVD, pop it in the drive, wait a few minutes and it'll work). Works like a charm. The next upgrade will be an SSD.

@Brother OOFSAUCE When one is unable to use Mac OS in day to day life because Apple releases updates that don't run on old machines, you are forced to go to a better OS like Windows. Nice video. One great thing is that if you wait even just a single year for the Core 2 Duo to be released, they are much, MUCH more compatible and versatile than the previous model. It can run much more apps, much faster them even, not to mention it can run 10.7.5, or even 10.8.5 after a hack. I have an Early 2008 MB running ML and everything works like a charm, well, almost. Even a few 2D modern Steam games worked fine. It has 2GB of RAM, but I'll upgrade to 4GB hopefully soon. So, those ones are certainly not obsolete. And if you go a bit farther in time to Late 2008/Early 2009, then you can still run El Capitan without a hiccup. Great video. Oh, and ignore the haters. Apple forces the machine to become obsolete, once the hardware can run the latest of OS (windows in this case) then it won't be obsolete for a while. For $60.00, I can use this as an everyday laptop for school as it can run the latest office under the windows OS just fine. This is the side of Apple I really dislike, they force you to update just so they can get sales, (even though the machine can be used for a bit longer). I am not familiar with Apple and their OS, but what would happen if you tried to install the latest versions of OSX?

this does leave a weird (but very pleasant) situation: Older Mac pros are super cheap now and can be, with some upgrades, made into beastly windows workstations. You can install a lot of modern graphics cards these days and the core2quad generation ones can even be overclocked a little, from a 2.8ghz version to 3.2 comfortably. This, plus the relatively low price of FBDIMM memory these days, means that one of the best desktop workstations you can get these days on a tight budget is, oddly enough, a Mac pro.
@romannasuti25
@romannasuti25 8 жыл бұрын
also, the reason they're cheap is because Apple has made them incompatible with the newest versions of OS10 (particularly Sierra).

Nathan Bullock Apple has always been about money. Are you familiar with the new MacBook Pro (Pro=Profit). Even the £1500 2TB SSD is integrated to the motherboard along with the £800 CPU , GPU and RAM. so basically if your motherboard gets grilled there's no way you will get your data back and if you wanna get another motherboard you will have to pay for the whole thing including the SSD, RAM, CPU... even though they're in a perfect working order. This video’s message is especially relevant now in 2021, when Apple is about to abandon Intel for their own chips. I’m not sure if Apple will continue supporting Intel macs for long, especially after how fast they dropped PowerPC. However, just install Windows and the mac goes from obsolete mac to a normal intel PC that will be supported until the hardware dies.
@fierelier7691
@fierelier7691 2 жыл бұрын
not true, as of windows 11. 32-bit machines will be abandoned by microsoft after 2025, when windows 10 ceases updates. use debian, or devuan instead. they still have interest in these old platforms. it's a bit of a learning curve, especially if you have a proprietary wifi card (which is likely), but it's worth it, if you wanna keep using your machine. i recommend using Xfce as the desktop environment, it's relatively light, and can likely be suited to your needs, may you be a macOS or windows user. i still depend on windows, and i will probably keep using windows 7 for a couple of years, still.
@cubedmelons876
@cubedmelons876 2 жыл бұрын
@@fierelier7691 I was more referring to the more recent 64 bit Intel macs released closer to the transition to Apple Silicon. The 32 bit macs from 2006 would be better off with Linux at this point, but then again, they're from 2006. Keeping a Bush-era laptop running in 2025 requires a lot of luck and handling with extreme care. I'm more concerned about Apple dropping support for their 3-4 year old hardware.

I still regularly use a Late-2007 Black Core 2 Duo Macbook with CloudReady when I'm not doing any "real PC" stuff and I'm pretty impressed how smoothly it does pretty much everything. Granted you're stuck with Chrome Apps/Extensions (so no non-web-based games like Minecraft), but it makes an 11 year old laptop feel like a new, off-the-shelf Chromebook.

I am using my Late 2007 MacBook Black to this date. It has the 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 gigs of ram and I put a 120gb ssd in it alongside a 640gb hdd replacing the superdrive. Until last year I used it with OS X 10.7.5 Lion (latest version for this model), then I switched to Windows 10 - and this laptop is still perfect. I use it every day for work and taking notes in college, watching movies and browsing the internet. I have a new battery that makes it perfectly portable and usable on the go. I think this is what makes MacBooks and all Apple computers incredible: after almost 10 years I can still use the MacBook and even though OS X is not the best on it anymore, the latest Windows still runs smooth as silk without any compromises.

Its strange you say this as a gamer, as windows 7 simply does not have the same performance in games as the newer windows 8 and 10. Sure windows 7 was powerful for its time, and windows 8 sure sucks balls, but there is no denying the lightweight of windows 10 (and 8) and the simple lack of dx12 support for win7. Look up some benchmarks if you dont believe me, it makes a difference

Honest answer? Gaming and price. 1) Most games don't get ported to iOS. Which isn't hater speech, but sadly the truth. You'll need to run software to get the games (or be lucky and your fav games do get ported to it.) 2) Mac costs WAY more than PC. Don't speak around the bush, that's a fact. If you get a custom built PC for ~1000€ you'll be fine for years and went overkill...Whereas you didn't even start to get a proper gaming rig with Mac.
@AlienFrequency

Macs actually no longer cost more than PCs, as a general rule (in US). Like anything else, it just depends on the specs. Plus, I have Macs from literally 2001 that are still going strong today, whereas every PC I had broke down within a year or two at the most. Personally, I do my gaming on consoles ...BTW, Mac OSX isn't the same as iOS. iOS is for iPhone, iPad and iPod, and has hundreds of thousands of games on it, if that's your thing. :)

Saw this referred to in another video and had to come see. Fyi, at least as of July 2023 when Im writing this, Mac OS 10.11 is needed for Bootcamp to work if you want to dual boot the 2 operating systems. I have a 2008 Macbook with Snow Leopard and I couldn't get Windows on it. Although I thinks it still technically possible. I also have a 2009 Macbook with 10.11 and that installed Windows 7 just fine (Im sure 10 or 11 would work, but its being used for old games that wont run on the newer OS). Bootcamp seems to work surprisingly well at finding drivers and I recommend using it if you can. These things are cheap and pretty decent hardware wise for their time. The 2008 was $50, the 2009 $75, and I just got a 2010 Macbook Pro for $20 without a hard drive, which I had an SSD laying around so no problem. That installed Windows without Mac OS just fine. Bootcamp was already on a flashdrive and found the correct drivers for this computer too. Even though it was setup on the older one. Definitely recommend grabbing one if you can find it for a good price.

Thanks for posting your video; it gave me a little more insight about my MBP Core Duo. I picked up an A1150 (MBP 1, Late 2006) from a friend for $200. I mainly bought it for the 500GB EVO 840 SSD it had so I could swap that with my primary laptop's 250GB SSD. After that my intent was to sell it for the same price I bought it for since I am not an Apple user. I am only an Apple user at work since I have to support the system for customers. However, like a stray animal my newly purchased MBP grew on me and I decided to keep it long-term. I have Windows 7 running on it using Boot Camp and I hope to try out Windows 10. The A1150 model can only be updated to OS X 10.6.8 and it only accepts 2GB RAM.

One thing to keep in mind is that while you may not be able to reproduce any negative effects in an older browser from a browsing standpoint, its the behind the scenes stuff that is probably the bigger concern, such as security holes, etc, that may not be apparent (and if that version of the browser is no longer being updated -- or that newer versions won't work on an outdated OS, that can be an even bigger concern/problem than a site just not working or appearing correctly). I guess that would be my biggest concern for using an old computer in modern times (ie. today). If the computer was NOT being used on the Internet, then that would be different as the threat of infection or intrusion is slim to none since the computer is not connected to the Internet, and then I would say that it's not necessarily obsolete, but from a security standpoint, something like this may be. If a computer can run Windows 10, than it can run Windows 8/8.1 so there really isn't a need to test. But what this actaully shows you is that Apple is more about designed obsolescence than Microsoft is, even though people claim Microsoft is perhaps the more "evil" of the two companies. Part of this may be that Apple sells hardware, and provides (bundles) the software with the computers, whereas Microsoft only specializes in software and doesn't have a lot of control (or the ability to design into the hardware side of things) designed obsolescence like Apple can (and does, as is exhibited by the whole battery debacle in the iPhones, where Apple admitted the slow-down on older iPhones partially as a means to get people to buy new ones or pay to have their batteries replaced).

I still use this mac as my television, connected to a eyeTV and a external hdd full of movies. This mac was brilliant for recalls, as its the first gen the top case plastics on the palm rest reacted to the oils in your hands and went a festy yellow. The notches on the top of the screen will cause the top case to crack at the front and you will also get little hairline cracks all over the machine especially around the screw locations.

I got my first MacBook from mid 2009 and I got to say, as a person who used windows for most of his life, it works just fine and it even runs OS X Yosemite just fine.

worth noting that the main reason for today's slowness on old computer is the bloated browsers. if your applications do not depend on browser frameworks (a lot of them do now, you might be surprised), you'll have a lot of fun working with almost any machine. -- it's a shame so little interest exists in making optimized software.
