I would like to mention that oxford ELT recently published a paper on EIL...ENGLISH AS AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE. It states that it is not necessary to sound native but we need to learn to speak in a way that is comprehensible by global speakers... And of course learning to be perfect is always appreciated...

The accent in the south of Britain is quite easy to understand. I have ADHD and I don't consciously think about mirroring those around me, but I do it anyway, to appear more like I fit in. Only recently I realized it gave me a knack for imitating accents and hearing the difference in accents. I have had people compliment me on my accent when I speak Spanish, and those from Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, and New Zealand all seem delighted when I ask if they are from their respective countries because apparently other Americans have a hard time knowing the difference. We are planning a trip to London in a few years and I think I will try to sound like I fit in. Once you start in British mode it is difficult to stop. My kids think it is hilarious when they press the " British button" on mom, only by being silent for a while do I revert back to my southern US accent.

Someone once told me I was faking my accent because I sounded too British and I'm Polish so they expected me to have a strong Polish accent. But I just don't understand it, I've been learning English since I was 5 and they teach British English in Polish schools. All of the teachers I've ever had had a British accent (usually RP). I've also been living in England for 3 years and the way I speak is just what feels most natural to me, it's how I learned the language and it's how people around me speak. Poland doesn't have it's own English accent because we only speak Polish in Poland. The people who have a stronger accent just never bothered pronouncing English sounds properly, which is fine as long as you can understand them, but you can't blame someone for being able to pronounce words correctly. In my opinion it's also much harder to speak with a Polish accent because the language wasn't designed to be used with Polish sounds so some words can be really difficult to pronounce "the Polish way". And I don't have a perfect accent either, you can easily tell English isn't my first language.

As a born and bred South Essex lad, fuck em' mate. If you speak with a English accent for any reason but more specifically that you are more comfortable and that's standard in your home country, then there's no reason to consider that's YOUR English accent. A lot of Swedish and Finnish KZbinrs I have watched speak with an American accent, as they grew up with American media and source materials (EG, Pewdiepie has a far more American English accent, despite living in Britain because he famously said video games helped him learn). Pewds may be a slightly unique case as he has got some Southern English twangs and slang mixed in, living in Brighton. If I learned Polish, I wouldn't know different accents, I'd learn whatever is taught to me. English should be no different.

I was born and educated in HK. Can’t recall where my British accent comes from. Maybe picked it up from a school teacher, English friends and English TV series when younger. I loved to watch Little Britain and Dr Who. Then the accent lasts until now 😅

I have listened to a few people faking their accent of a British native speaker. The funny thing is they usually mispronounce words but maintain the fake accent. To me, their spoken English sounds weird. Instead of trying to sound like a native speaker, they should solve their pronunciation problem and learn the connected speech rules. These are good enough for them to sound natural and fluent with a neutral accent. Note: Anyone can solve his pronunciation problem completely in just one month.

They are not in conflict. You have a bannan. That doesn't make you unable to have an apple at the same time. They can have both. They can keep the way, the rhyme they've acquired and polish their pronunciation of unfamiliar words. They are always second language learners and they should always be allowed to have flaws and space for improvements. People who have English as their first language and like to pick on English language learners are just so arrogant and narrow-minded.

In my perspective of accent i have few opinion regarding accent 1) people who dont like to change their accent never change it. 2)people who have a thick indian accent and want to change into a neutral accent thats good, because it would be much better understood by others. As mentioned India each state has their own accent. 4)people who are accent lover and like to learn accent can get the accent over time and regular practice. 4) people who laugh at the british and American accent without knowing how they mispronounce and thick accent is😊 and justified as india has its own accent nonetheless they never change. I am never against India, but there are countries like korea where american English is being taught in their school. 5) people in india need to accept the English language and teach their children because it can increase their ability to understand more words from their young age and improve their accent. 6) there are people in india who are against accent.. Even the teachers in english dont even realise how accent is very important. Be yourself but you can imrove your self if you want👍.. For sure accent is a mark to identity from which country your are from but that doesnt mean you cant improve your accent so that people can understand each other.people talk English just like speaking telugu or malayalam or tamil. Some may pronounce words Correct way but due to thick indian accent people cant understand you. I have an experience i talked with a spoken English teacher she told me only fluency and pronunciation are important i agree with that.. But what if a person has thick indian accent, cant he improve that if he need? Is there any mistake in teaching an accent in spoken English classes? Are spoken English classes in india only to make money out of IELTS students. We must change our mindset to study and accept new things teacher must also have the confidence to teach students all aspects of spoken English like pronounciation, fluency including accent.

In school, I would watch American shows and my accent naturally changed. From last year, I’m more into watching British shows and again naturally, my accent drifted from American to British. Both times, people thought I was being a snob. It happened because I preferred to watch better content which Indian shows lack. I never faked it. If there’s anything that I’ve learnt from my experiences, you can’t change people. Even if you’re doing better than them in life, they don’t have the courage to accept the reality. And so, they make it look like, you are doing something wrong and they are on the right path. Love From India.

@@aishwaryas3369 Once when I mentioned the same thing someone tried to argue a lot..in terms of maintaining our accent as an indian and that native speaking skills are not that important... But I agree with you ....when we do engineering ..or any other professional courses we try to make it at par globally...so when we learn a language why not then? One cannot be perfect from day one but gradually we can uplift out skills.
