Is it OK to wear pro cycling kit when you're riding your bike, or does it make you a pro kit w***er? There's been an ongoing debate in the world of cyclists for showing support for your favourite pro teams out on the road by sporting their kit, and whether or not that's OK. Well, we're here to tell you - we think it's absolutely fine! If you want to wear pro kit head to toe, you should! If you want to wear jeans and a tee shirt, do! You can wear what you like! We also have all your usual favourites such as Hack or Bodge and this week's inspiration.

I have been cycling for 38 years, and if wearing a Pro Kit makes me feel good, professional, and gets me motivated and out the door for a ride... I say wear it! :) I have been a member of local clubs/teams at times and have worn a local club Kit, but there has always been this stereo type within local races or group rides that you cant wear a pro kit, and I think these snobby guys are just missing the point that is more important that you are out there riding, and not what you are wearing, or that it makes you feel better and possibly ride better when wearing a Pro Kit! All my Best! :)

The judgement of what cyclists wear is one of the most off-putting things for me as a beginner rider. Judgment in general. For Christ's sake, people should be able to wear what they like unless it's indecent. I wear a trisuit on a rusty old MTB which, yeah, is a weird combo, but it feels comfortable and I like it.

I don't tend to see many riders here in the UK sporting pro kits. However, when cycling in Italy I tend to see a lot of local cyclists wearing either a team jersey, or full kit. Plenty of local bike shops ive been to over there tend to stock some pro kits and Giro leaders jerseys, contrary to shops here in the UK. However, I noticed in Italy that shops stocked and people subsequently wore the kit belonging to the team Vincenzo Nibali is riding for. That tells me that they're simply supporting him and his team - a bit like a football player may attract new fans etc (e.g. CR7 to Juventus). I don't see anything wrong with that, I just think that from my experience in the UK, cycling is way too elitist when it comes to wearing pro kit.

I wrote a letter on this very subject that was published years ago in a cycling magazine. What sparked my letter was an incident with a rider on our Tuesday night ride. Our "Tuesday niter" was a pretty big event, as we would have Pros come down from Austin (Tx) every now and then. Lance a few times, Tyler Hamilton, etc.. Anyway,.. I was a Cat 1 Mtb racer, and a Cat 2 Roadie,.. I showed up at the ride wearing some MTB socks.. YES, the Audacity! And was called out by an overweight rider wearing a FULL Team CSC racing "uniform" and aboard his $10,000+ bike. Being the smartass that i am, i made it a point to push him the whole ride, while circling back on the climbs to make sure he could see my socks. There was a book put out at the time that many people were spreading around because it talked about "what proper cycling etiquette" should be followed by roadies, mtb riders, commuters, etc... This is what he was citing as to how I should be looked down at because i was not wearing "Proper kit"... I obviously wear what I want, and I guess look down at Posers.. If you go out on a group ride, in full regalia, and say are wearing a "King of the Mountains" jersey,.. then don't call out another rider when you can't do a climb without stopping to catch your breath... Wearing a full team kit can be cool, but I don't need to tell you, that roadies (obviously not all, but a large percentage) can be snobby group. I did go out the next Tuesday night on my MTB, with slicks, and a sleeveless jersy, baggies, and made it a point to out ride the poser btw...

I have to take a humorous exception to the comments about knowing what the companies produce that are on your kit. As an American that grew watching and playing the big three: football, baseball, and basketball I actually LOVE wearing kits or T-shirts that advertise something that I have no idea about. My first soccer jersey that had the O2 logo while having no idea it was a wireless provider (I think). Many years later I decided to become a Tottenham Hotspur fan BECAUSE I had no idea what a Tottenham or a Hotspur was. (I have not admitted to my Nashville Spurs fan club buddies that I used to own an Arsenal jersey). After watching this great content, I think I will buy a Peter Sagan kit because he is so joyful to watch. He’s like the Brett Farve of cycling. He’s just there to have fun! Also, let me clarify, I would like a Sagan jersey not full kit because I just cannot wear the bike shorts or bibs. I prefer MTB shorts so I appreciate your comments about wearing what you want AND not judging others about what they wear. Thanks y’all!

Everything from wearing the ‘wrong clothes’ to not wanting to recognise someone saying hello because someone is on the ‘wrong kind of bike’ or someone getting called out for not having the bike handling skills others believe is a must to ride a bike of a certain kind or label. Oooh, I use a pressure sprayer to wash my bike as well. I can wash 3 bikes with 5 litres of water. And it easily gets rid of all the muck the Danish weather can throw at my bikes 👍🏻

The one caveat I've found (at least in the USA): You may think you're getting a good deal buying 'officially licensed' team kit, but historically, consumer pro team kit is almost never the "real" kit the team riders use...sometimes it is even made by a different clothing manufacturer altogether, and has much cheaper trim/materials/cut. Because of this, I've found it often poor value compared to other options.

FYI Simon, Suffolk's Watson's hill has a whopping 30m of elevation over 500m with and average gradient of 5%. Although I would argue Hartest Hill down the road has the 'honour' of "Suffolk's toughest climb" with an elevation gain of an ear popping 34m at a leg burning gradient of 7.6% over 400m. Maybe GCN should come and be the judge? I'll even throw a few craft beers in the fridge for Dan.

It's also the location of the East District Championship hill climb and can be ridden in under 50 seconds. There are a handful of single arrow climbs in Suffolk and it's definitely more lumpy than flat.

I am not a national champ but support our national junior team by wearing buying and having worn their used kit that has the national flag. I am a reigning champ of 5 countries instead including my own so Nobody? Yeah I am pretty much a nobody in UCI since my championship is from another union that does not have a Nordic championship jersey. Am I a bad person? IMO if someone that is not a Nordic champ would wear kit hat says so I think me too where can I get one ;-) Support the ones you love I say. With that said I do not have the gall to wear rainbow stripes.

My one funny story wearing pro kit... I went out on a regular ride around Vandenberg Air Force Base where we lived, wearing a full Saxo Bank (the bright yelllow/green) kit. Unbeknownst to me, the base was actually hosting a pro race. I left base housing and passed through an intersection, and there was a dude sitting there on a motorcycle with a hand held radio and he stared at me as I went by him. A bit later I saw 3 or 4 dudes cycling ahead of me, which I thought was unusual because I never really saw many other riders on this stretch. They circled around a traffic cone and came back towards me. Once again, they were staring at me and one dude started shouting “GO GO GO” to the others, or to me, no idea. I then realized “oh crap, there’s a real race going on today, and I think they think I’m bridging across! Surely they didn’t think I was a WT Pro?

Have to be careful round my home (south Manchester/Peak District) many of the GB kits out riding are "exactly what they say on the tin" out from the National Cycling Centre; not a group to try and burn off, or even join. The opposite can also be true; out one day many years ago trying to catch a non-team-kit rider, came alongside, and was very surprised to come face to face with David Miller during his ban, said "Hi" and quickly took the next turn off to avoid even trying to keep up.

I ride Trek bikes and use Bontrager gear and I am also fond of a coffee or two. I also have no issues with the other sponsors such as SRAM, Santini the cycle clothing manufacturers and Splunk the American software company. I am also a black belt in karate so anyone who has an issue is quite welcome to speak to me about it.

I think it is great that you are saying to wear what ever you want. We need to be more inclusive and support each other. We now have so many different "groups" of riders and they all have their particular style. Each to their own. When I was younger I loved to wear the kit of the teams I supported.(when I looked like I had a chance to be in the teams :-P ) However I now much prefer simple colours and designs. Then you can mix and match the kit. Also it looks just that little bit smarter in my opinion.

We've all started somewhere, remember that. Have fun cycling and enjoy it. When you go to represent a brand do your research. With cycling I do my best to stick with core companies that deal with cycling. An when a I skated I kept with core brands. To this day I still put my money with core companies in both sports.

What's weird of wearing pro-team kit is also this: cycling is different from the rest of the sports in that you share the roads with the pros. In most sports that doesn't happen. So I doesn't seem right (for me) wearing a Bora shirt, knowing that a Bora rider lives nearby and shares the roads with me.

My parents live close to where Bora-hansgrohe are headquartered (and just around the corner from Marcus Burghardt's home), and I see at least one or two people in full kit every time I ride there. Sometimes it's an actual team member, but usually they're just fans. Makes it very weird, because you always try to figure out who it is in the very short amount of time you have.

Believe me..... Bora Riders would not be bothered one bit about you wearing Bora kit. 1... Your promoting UCI, which is never a bad thing 😎
