Total mood elevating song, I love it. Freddie was in a heterosexual relationship at the time that Queen formed and the other three men are and always have been straight. Freddie suggested the name Queen because it was regal and because he believed it would create an element of interest in what the band was all about. Before they chose the name Queen, the band was called Smile. Freddie had a degree in design and advertising so he suggested outlandish outfits, creative lighting and makeup for the band, to go along with their new name. In 1970 which is when Queen began, Freddie was 24, Brian 23, Roger 21 & John 19 . My favorite live Queen is White Queen live at Odeon, Hammersmith 1975.It is absolutely beautiful and mind blowing. The bad was perfect during that performance. Thank you for your reactions.

Freddie liked the name, as others responded, because it was impossible to forget! Back then, we didn't waste time caring about labels. Queen were great, Freddie was outrageously endearing and times were good. In the days of Glam Rock, one didn't immediately make assumptions, lol. The cross-dressing thing was a music video in which they dressed as characters from a long-running (25 years at the time)* and very popular British soap opera. It was a parody but wasn't understood by non-British fans who weren't familiar with the show. In this video, Freddie is 33; Brian 32; Roger 30; John 28. RIP, Mr. Fahrenheit👑 *It's still running, lol (Coronation St.)

You certainly explained it a lot calmer than I was going to. There was none of this love for Freddie when I joined up. I was an old hand by the time "Bohemian Rhapsody" came out, and being a Queen fan in the 70s could get your behind kicked in the parking lot at school. So I suppose I'm still a little touchy about people going for that angle. As Freddie said, "It can mean a lot of things."

This is the song that blasts out of the jukebox at the wrong time on Sean of the Dead. One of my favorite scenes in the movie. Many films feature Queen. The original Highlander movie has a Queen musical score. I've been listening to them since the early 1970s. Few have had the stage presence Freddie or amazing sound the four of them made together.

Gen X here so I was there and remember all of Queen hits. You really had to be there to appreciate how much Queen was loved by fans. Freddie was the singer, he had a girlfriend Mary for 6 years until he realised he preferred the same sex. Mary was his best friend all his life. All other queen members were married or had girlfriends. If you haven't reacted to the live aid of Queen, please do you won't be disappointed.

Love …love your reaction to this song …. and how much you appreciate Freddie and the band as a whole. I just love it when young people like yourselves discover Queen music …..and the whole 1970’s and 1980’s era of music. Queen was NOT a gay band…..only Freddie and he was more of a bisexual….see the other comments for more info about that. Freddie was diagnosed with AIDS in April 1987 …..He continued to sing and make great songs right up until he died in 1991. Queen has a huge catalog of almost 300 recorded songs including solo albums…..many you will recognize, but just didn’t know they were by Queen. Most all Queen songs are better when performed live than the studio release versions…… so please always try to react to the live versions when possible…… Please react to “Somebody to Love “ live in Montreal 1981 to start off with. Please continue to react to more Queen …..because there is so much more. 😊 Thank you 💕

I don't think the band's name Queen had anything to do with being gay. It is just Freddie Mercury who was very open about his homosexuality. The other members were not. And "Queen was suggested by Freddie Mercury; his real name, Farrokh "Freddie" Bulsara, who was from Zanzibar and of Indian Parsi descent, Bulsara had studied fashion design for a year before switching to graphic art and design, and soon became a keen fan of SMILE; this was the original name of the band. He asked if he could join the group as lead singer. Bulsara (Freddie Mercury was his stage name) suggested the group should be renamed to "Queen". The others were uncertain at first, but he said, "it's wonderful, dear, people will love it". And he was right. So Queen was established in 1970. Queen have been a global presence in popular culture for more than half a century. Estimates of their record sales range from 250 million to 300 million, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists. In 1990, Queen received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and with each member having composed hit singles, all four were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2005, they received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors, and in 2018 were presented the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. I was a teen then when they came into international prominence.

OMG No! They named themselves Queen because Freddie wanted a strong, regal, and easily recognizable name that would stand out. He thought Queen was perfect. When they started they were in their early to mid 20’s. You MUST react to Somebody to Love, Live from Montreal 1981. Their Live Aid 20 minute set is considered one of the greatest live performances ever.- well worth the 20 minutes watching.

Yep. Freddie wanted a name to match his personality. They weren't Queen because he was gay. They were Queen because of his flamboyant personality. Freddie never said, publicly that he was gay. Everyone figured as much, though. Back then, musitions and movie stars kept that to themselves. As well as marital status for most.

One of my favorite songs. These four guys are amazing together. People don't give the vocal contribution to drummer Roger Taylor, who adds a lot of that high pitch to the vocals in many songs. Freddie came up with the name because he felt it was strong, regal and easy to remember. Didn't have anything to do with being gay or cross dressing.

I think Freddie was 25 lead guitar Brian was 24 drummer Roger was 23 and the bass player John was just 19. They were together 20 years made 14 albums wilth well over 200 songs. I think you should watch them live. Ill give you a choice young queen its Liar live at the rainbow London 74 or older queen Now I'm here Saturday night Wembley 86. Freddie suggested the name Queen because it was outrageous at the time to use a royal title for a rock band. Enjoy seeing young guys enjoying the same music 🎵🎶 at I do only I started over 50 years ago

No it had nothing to do with being gay. Freddie said , it’s because the name Queen sounded very regal. They were not cross dressers . Yes Freddie was gay . Bo Rap was his coming out song, which nobody but the inner circle knew about. All four boys are all college graduates. Freddie graduated with a Graphic Designer degree. Roger studied dentistry and graduated with a Biology degree, Brian is an astrophysicist-that helped NASA at one point . Animal activist and much more. And was knighted by the king. John ( Deacy) an electrical engineer He’s the youngest of the boy’s and joined the group when he was 19

No, they renamed themselves Queen because it’s regal and outrageous, in Freddie’s words. He loved that stuff. They’re from the U. K., so they actually had a Queen until last year, when she passed. They were in college when they started, Freddie’s slightly older, John is slightly younger than Roger and Brian, They were performing since 1970, but took the name Queen when they were going to make their first album, self-named Queen. Freddie didn’t even know he as bisexual yet at that time. He was living with and engaged to Mary Austin, and they ended their romantic relationship once he knew he was bisexual, but remained life-long very close friends. She was there when he passed away. He considered her his soul mate and common-law wife foe many years. Lots to this story…lots and lots. They all have college degrees, Brian a PHD in Astro-physics. More info..too much typing. Lol. Sorry.

Oh my goodness, dear twins, 2:51 you heard incorrectly I must say that it is not true, according to Freddie Mercury he came up with Queen because he thought it was a strong, regal name that was easy to learn and repeat. 3:08 How old were they? Let's see based on their date of birth Freddie was 24, Brian May was 23, Roger Taylor was 21 and John Deacon was 19 years of age, highly educated, and talented young men. Brian May and Roger Taylor were part of a band called SMILE along with Tim Staffell who was the lead singer and bassist, Tim decided to leave the band for better opportunities, then Freddie became the next lead singer, and renamed SMILE to Queen, then later they found John Deacon as their new bassist. 2:54 As for cross dressing, the Queen band members only dressed in drag for ONE video and that was the song called "I Want to Break Free" written by bassist John Deacon, he wrote the song from the male perspective of the women's liberation movement. The year was 1984 and it was Roger Taylor's then girlfriend who suggested to him that they do the video in drag, he brought up to them and they went with it, they parodied a British soap opera show called Coronation Street, their choice to go drag was fitting for the message of the song about freedom from an ordinary life. This song "Don't Stop me Now" was released in 1979. And it is Playlist Worthy! Hair styles were changing as years passed. You can also react to "Radio Ga Ga" it was like a commentary on television overtaking radio's popularity and how one would listen to radio in the past for a favorite comedy, drama, or science fiction program. They used old footage from a 1927 movie called Metropolis in that video. "Hammer to Fall" written by Brian May around the time of the Cold War era, "Crazy Little thing Called Love" written by Freddie Mercury as his tribute to Elvis Presley in 1979, Elvis died in 1977. "We will Rock you" You two must have heard that song before if you two ever went to a sporting event, and "We Are the Champions", Somebody to Love from the Official Queen KZbin channel for the studio version mixed with some clips from a concert they performed the song in and then watch them wow their audience with a live version from Montreal in 1981; it is such a wonderful experience to react to both. Peace! ☮
