7:50 Actually, with the wing cap, it is possible. You can place down the box and do a triple jump dive to the island. If you dive at the right moment, you grab the box while triple jump diving, and with the wing cap, you can actually make it. You can use the same tech for WF and SSL as well. Requires alot of practice and save states though. Like this so he can see it please. (I am sort of a sloppy speedrunner but i have fun with a special challenge where I have to get the reds with the box.I made it through all of the stages, in other words, BOB, WF, and VERY SURPRISINGLY SSL) You can also try to use this for other stars.

When I was a kid, we didn't realize Wet Dry World's water level depended on the height at which you entered the painting. We figured out that jumping onto the grey seam just right allowed Mario to glitching slide all the way to the cage though, so maybe that could work.

In fact, the only things that are scenario- or star-dependent in SM64 are cannons in some levels (esp. BoB), Koopa the Quick, the tower with the 2nd Star and owl in Whomp’s Fortress, the ship and Unagi in JRB, the Big Penguin and Snowman’s Body in CCM, Bowser’s Sub and the moving poles in DDD, and the relative locations of the entrances to DDD and BitFS. For everything else in the game, it doesn’t matter what scenario you load or which Stars in a level you’ve collected.

The holder of the 4 rotating platform thing is pretty glitchy (its hitbox is asymmetrical and differs much from it's skin) maybe that helps. Also you can use pause-buffering and alternating frame walks to rotate the seesaw 90° and get ontop of it.

I believe in wet dry world you can get the two town stars since the tunnel to the town while holding a box causes the "hold any item" glitch (or whatever it's called). Thus, you can leave the box behind and pick up your complementary one in the town. Unless I am wrong of course.

For this run I was trying to eliminate the holding exploits. Any level with a non-fade-to-black transition becomes a lot easier once you can clone / load items. Even without the transition, a skilled player can manipulate the game to pretty much call any star to them. I wanted to make the run as vanilla as possible to be more in-line with what could have been accomplished as a kid. Although, I suppose there are some outliers.

My favorite mini-game I played in Super Mario 64 was playing a game of tag with the "1-Up Mushrooms" that chase down Mario. Effectively, on any stage that had one of those homing-missile mushrooms, I would activate it and then try to play through the stage and collect stars without allowing it to touch me; which is a lot more difficult than it sounds because the only effective way to gain distance from the "1-Up Mushroom" is to Long-Jump, because it moves at the same speed as Mario's regular running pace; meaning, it will gradually close the distance to catch you whenever you make any type of left or right turn whatsoever. So apart from running in a straight line on flat (or descending) ground, any arch movement you make will give the homing-missile mushroom some leeway to catch up; therefore, to increase the distance between yourself and the "1-Up Mushroom", you have to strategically plot out fast routes that optimize "Long-Jumps" and downward slopes as often as possible. One of the more difficult things to do is to gain just barely enough distance to use a warp-spot within a level. For instance, using the warp-flowerpads in "Bob-Bomb Battlefield", if you gain just enough distance from the "1-Up Mushroom" to successfully warp away before it touches you, that will give you tremendous distance between it and yourself, thereby giving you enough time accomplish slower stars (such as getting all the way to the top of the mountain to battle the Bob-Bomb King. Admittedly, I always struggled with defeating the boss before the homing-missile mushroom reaches me; I can attest that it is possible, but extremely difficult. Nevertheless, playing tag with the "1-Up Mushrooms" were my favorite self-imposed mini-game pass-time in Super Mario 64. Have you considered trying a challenge to see if it is possible to beat Super Mario 64 without being touched by the homing-missile on every stage? Some stages don't have the "1-Up Mushrooms" that chase Mario, so you would likely have to modify the game to spawn that specific type of homing-missile mushroom on every stage, but I'd be sincerely curious to know how many stars are obtainable when Mario is forced to evade the "1-Up Mushroom" like a plague!

Obviously, I would assume that Bowser-battles would need to be immune since there is virtually nowhere to run from the homing-missile mushroom (unless you slow it down); and even if you could repeatedly "Long-Jump" around the edges of Bowser's arenas to keep away from the "1-Up Mushroom", you would never have enough time to grab and throw Bowser. But apart from Bowser-fights, have you considered seeing how many stars are obtainable throughout the game without getting hit by the homing-missile mushroom? I would sincerely be curious to know the answer...

I just found you and your videos and I love them already. I really enjoy your explaination throughout the whole videos, but, (if it's not too much work), I think it would be fun to have an additional video, like a "extra features", where you post the whole run of the box carrying. Obviously segmented of course, where only the segment of succession for every star is present. Perhaps with a small text below with a "fails" or a "time to complete" is present. At least I would watch it. Anyway, keep up the great videos! 😄

At 27:18, he drops the Cork Box and then collects the star, stating you need to be careful to not drop and destroy the Box. However, he says, at 5:14 "Stars can only be collected if the Box is in Mario's hand when he touches it -- thus proving that he did the star incorrectly as he collected it after dropping the box.
