It's genuinely interesting to see a producer who seemly doesn't deal with game music react to this kind of stuff. You can tell that he digs what Mick is doing even though they're from different worlds.

While everyone is (rightly so) telling you to check out his Doom work, Mick Gordon has got a plethora of other really works that you should check out. His work on Prey is haunting and full of synths, specifically Everything Will Be Okay, Semi-Sacred Geometry (female vocals version), MindGames, or his work on Wolfenstein is just as heavy but of a different style with songs like Ransacked, prototype, Right triggers warning, Nazi punks, the partisan, 14 years. Then his work on Killer Instinct is so varied its insane, from creating a legitimate rap (Rise ft. Omegasparx) track with great sound to a greek inspired track, to Lycanthropy which is a horror inspired theme with full on orchestral production and heavy strings. You gotta check out the rest of his work, its all so good.

I was really stoked to see you reacting to this. Out of all the gamerips, this one was my favorite in terms of energy and pure drive. To dovetail off of other comments in this section, what you're listening to is basically a collage of the overall soundtrack to a specific level of the game (in particular, the protagonist entering a city of Hell called Nekrovol), cut into pieces and edited together for a degree of coherency. Something you'll notice that differs between Mick Gordon arrangements and gamerips is that Mick typically arranges his OST tracks to have more intentional segues and transitions, where these gamerips do their best to make it still seem coherent. This particular gamerip was really good at that in comparison to others, though still not perfect like his actual compositions. One challenge the production team faced is that Gordon pretty much made all of the music himself, and didn't provide the master tracks to the sound engine team. He would provide them the components they needed to feed into the engine, but not full OST arrangements for the soundtrack release, because he wanted to really make them perfect (and this took a lot of time). Understandable, but this led to a conflict that eventually led to his separation from the team prior to release of Doom Eternal due to not making deadlines. In the games (the 2016 release of Doom, and Doom Eternal this year), the music engine was designed to drop you in and out of these driving sections in response to player actions. When you start combat, the music picks up and responds to the individual moments of intensity. When the combat is over, you transition out into the calmer and more brooding sections of the track. The music even drops out for just a beat or two when you do actions that need 'punctuation' musically. In practice, it is one of the most sophisticated and well-engineered soundtracks in existence, putting aside the musicality itself. It's a soundtrack that makes you feel like you're physically punching the demons yourself, and ripping them apart with your own hands. While you may enjoy these tracks as a musician and producer, it is something entirely different to experience through gameplay. I don't doubt that you can sense that given your experience, but I implore you to try it for yourself for the maximum effect. There is a really good series of interviews Mick Gordon did, both for the 2016 release and Doom Eternal. DOOM: Behind the Music (both part 1 and 2) is a good primer on what inspired these design choices and how it came to fruition as a production team. They're short and not really ideal for reaction material (unless you're looking to provide a more production commentary about it), but if you find this music interesting it'll be good background information for context. I have to say, it has been really cool to see a producer's take on this music. Lots of people laud this work for good reason, but most people don't have the wealth of experience and insight to offer that someone experienced can offer. Even if it's just visceral reactions, your responses have articulated a lot of under-explained and understated nuances. Looking forward to seeing more stuff from you, Doom or otherwise!

Dat all corrupted noise breakdown bridge tho....aint no one brave enough to do that. Takes a commitment amd dedication to endless pursuit of sonic perfection to keep adding on and not muddle the mix with mismatched and un-panned effects/accents. Mick really dialed the whole feel of the accompanying sound. Those noises just fuel the adrenaline spike when hunting 3d rendered demons. Its utterly glorious

You should try The Partisan from Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. Mick's Doom music is good but the Partisan is his best work in my opinion. It's from a game about Germany winning WWII, fully realizing all of their ridiculous war-winning dreams and technologies. The song is a remake of a real life folk song written by the French Resistance during WWII, so it has a real weight behind it

His music is compiled of hundreds of stems that come into play in differing parts of the levels and even within the combat encounters will pop in with differing levels of frequency depending on your actions, the concentration of monsters, and killing monsters. So it is like having an an ai conductor tailor the music to your playstyle at the moment. So the songs you hear seem disjointed groupings of riffs because thats how it was designed. Mick got fired for not getting the soundtrack ready in time to release with the game but seeing how complex every level's arrangement was rather than just a looping song it would be really hard to distill a level's sound into a song as we know it.
